In this video, Rich shows you how to replace a chandelier.
Replacing a chandelier is not the easiest home renovation, but it can be done by almost anyone just taking the steps one at a time.
The two most important parts are turning off the power to the light fixture at the breaker panel and knowing which wires on the chandelier to connect to the power supply wires. If you aren't 100% sure about the wire connections, contact an electrician or someone who knows about electrical connections.
The steps for replacing a chandelier:
Turn off the power to the old chandelier at the breaker panel.
Undo the cover plate.
Remove the retaining screws.
Unhook all wires.
Take down old chandelier.
Assemble new chandelier.
Figure out the correct height of the new chandelier and cut the chain to the appropriate length.
Run the wires through the chain links of the new chandelier.
Hook up the new chandelier wires to the power source (if you aren't 100% sure of which wire to hook up together, call an electrician or someone knowledgeable in electricity.
Attach the cover plate.
Attach the chain to mounting bracket.
Turn the power back on and enjoy your new chandelier.

Thanks for this. Your instruction is clear and easy to follow for a total novice like me. On the mini chandelier I'm installing, the wires are not color coded but do have the labels "N", "L", and there's a third one labeled with a picture symbol. I understand that N means "neutral" and L means "load," but the third one I'm not sure what the symbol means.

If you're identifying the live from the neutral on a wire like that, the neutral side will have a series of ridges along it. When I was first learning I used to think of those ridges like the points on a W, so I would know to attach it to the 'W'hite wire. Two things that can be your best friend during this process are wire strippers like he has in this video, but also a set of chain pliers. Using regular pliers to manipulate a piece of chain can be done, but it's so much easier with a specialized tool. And instead of prying both sides open at once, I suggest only opening one side of the link. It's all you need, it's easier to do and it gives you a better guide to get the link back to its starting position. The more you manipulate a link the harder it is to avoid ruining the finish. Not all canopies/cover plates attach like the ones in this video, so it's important to note that before you begin so you can order your steps properly.

Thanks. Just a little tip: it's a good idea to assemble the new chandelier BEFORE you start taking the old one down.

The old chandelier looks like a Williamsburg model. They never really go out of style, but there's no accounting for taste.

+Maggie Sue Hi Maggie Sue, every person has their own idea of what is in style. This home owner wanted a new look, but who knows, maybe we will be putting up the old chandelier again in a few years. Thanks for your comment.

looks similar to what we have, which I loathe. I'm looking at this to see how to get rid of it as a matter of fact.

I think they've gone out of style at this point.

It depends on the style of your home. Even the most beautiful chandeliers have settings they simply wouldn't suit. Hopefully the homeowner donated the old model so that somebody with a more appropriate home aesthetic can give it some love.

I have an angled ceiling and pretty tall to basically hang it all the way up there, what you are doing would be pretty difficult to do. Can I just cut the wires from the existing chandelier and connect them to the new one?

Hey Aroos, Connections for a light must be enclosed in an electrical box. Never take short cuts with electricity because of the danger - fire or shock. Maybe try renting an adjustable ladder or scaffolding. Maybe get s friend on a separate ladder to lend you hand. It may take extra effort, but in the end you’ll be safer and sleep easy. Thanks for watching.

Appears you don't mention feeding the wires through the nipple (threaded hollow rod) in the steps above, or show it being done n the video. It appears it magically happens right after the electrician warning, and before James holds the chandelier, but is a critical step.

Hi Xorcize, yes it looks like that step was cut out in the editing of this video. Thanks for pointing that out!

old one was nicer in my opinion. Room looks really dark and dated.
