How to Replace a Clutch in your Car or Truck (Full DIY Guide)

Learn how to replace a clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, throw out bearing (aka release bearing), pilot bearing and rear main seal in this video!
My clutch was fine but my throwout bearing was bad so I decided to show how to replace all of the wear items while the transmission was off. This includes replacing the pilot bearing which the transmission input shaft goes into, the throwout bearing which engages the pressure plate via the clutch fork, the flywheel which I upgraded to an aluminum light weight flywheel, and finally the rear main seal because that is a common wear item which causes oil leaks in higher mileage motors. With the transmission out, it is worth it to replace all of these parts now instead of having to do this all over again. Most clutch kits come with the throwout bearing and pilot bearing so you just need to buy a rear main seal.

_Usually_ less mess, but harder to get a good seal sometimes, especially if the cloth is too thick. Remember that it has to fit between the inside of the bushing and the outside of your pushing tool without too much friction, or you'll just wedge it all inside the bushing - but without too much extra room or it just won't work. But it's an option if you don't have bread handy. :-)

Some other tips to supplement this great video: 1. Even with the alignment tool, if it’s a plastic one, the clutch disc will likely sag a little. So before you tighten the pressure plate bolts, make sure the alignment tool is centered in the pilot bearing and level. 2. Some transmissions will have a small amount of play at the input shaft so do some research before buying a new tranny if yours has end play. 3. Another trick to lining up the input shaft to the splines, is manipulating the gear levers and put it in gear then rotate the rear tailshaft until it lines up and fits in. This causes the input shaft to rotate. Then put it back into neutral as you push it in. 4. Don’t hammer in bearing pilot bushings!

Rangers are pretty easy to replace the clutch, just did my 93 3.0, i didn’t remove the y pipe thinking it wouldn’t be in the way so i unbolted the transmission and found out I couldn’t lower the transmission enough, should’ve removed the y pipe first and would’ve made taking the bell housing bolts a lot easier too

I don't remember where I saw it (I think it was on an episode of Roadkill), but I heard you could also use something like a bar of soap or candle wax. I just think it would be a little less messy, and also less likely to seep out the small gap between the bearing and the dowel/rod/whatever your using.

Greetings from South Africa. This video is helping me so much! My Project car and dream car is my turbo charged FZ-FE 4.5L Straight 6 Petrol Toyota land cruiser pickup. I bought it with 400 000+ km on the clock and believe it or not, the rear main seal went. The clutch was already worn down some and with the extra oil flinging around, I ended up burning the clutch. Pressure plate was also bent from the heat. Flywheel was saved with a resurface. Got the parts, followed your instructions and I am almost there. takes a bit longer in between all the other stuff of life, but as soon as it's up and running I will send you some photos and videos. Thanks again for making great videos. Keep at it. I just love watching your videos, can't stop. PS the gearbox on my pickup is F***** heavy. PSPS, the bread works great!

Glad I know this channel, been watching your videos since few years ago and today I managed to open the transmission of our truck and boy the bearing is pulverised, the disc was smaller in diameter than the flywheel and one of the flywheel's teeth broke. This past few weeks my father and i have been tackling with the clutch slider thinking that that's the one broke down cuz of recent flood where it was submerged and your video guided us! Still took us the whole day though😂. Tomorrow, we will try to find replacement parts and maybe put it back together. Hope it works out!
