How to install water shut off valve. Installing a new water cut shut off valve for your sink or toilet is easy with the right tools.
When remodeling or upgrading your bathroom, don't leave a nasty, corroded water shut off valve. Replacements are easy to install and look so much better, not to mention 1/4 turn valves work so much better as well. The most difficult task is removing the compression ferrule but the right tool makes it super easy.

Thanks so much. Having to replace a 73 year-old toilet. It's original. Not sure about the valve, but it looked old when we moved in 21 years ago. Just stopped working today. It was time. The toilet and the valve have done more than their fair share of work. Thanks for the hint about the ferrel puller as well!

I am going to get one of those. I have the puller that looks like a great puller with two arms that have 90'0 bends in them that fit behind the nut it works but your tool you show involves a lot less fumbling around the one I have also can be used to pull those stubborn plastic faucet handles. Many times if the nut looks pretty new I want to change to a quarter turn valve but the hole in the new valve is not as deep as the old one so I just pull the ferrule closer to the end of the tubing with your tool I will pull them all the way off as yours is much easier to use. Nice video for soft water jobs, but what can you do when hard water deposits lock the ferrule nut to the valve and you can't get the valve or ferrule nut to turn when the assembly is located very close to the cabinet wall. After 20 minutes of effort, I gave up and just connected the new faucet to the old valve and left the problem to the future. PS - the reason I wanted to replace the valve was that it was "frozen" in the open position and could not be budged to turn off the water flow (oddly, the corresponding hot water valve worked perfectly and they were both installed at the same time).
@DougForce
@DougForce 11 месяцев назад
@UTArch1 I’ve encountered that kind of issue before as well and the solution is always the same. Bigger job. You have to open the wall to gain access to the pipe, cut off the frozen valve and extend the pipe. I too have left those issues to the future but a leak in that area means you have to cut water to the house - which gets painful quickly! lol I broke a frozen valve trying to release it and had to open the wall in the adjoining room to get in and replace the whole house cutoff - which meant cutting water at the street. I called in a pro for that one! lol

Doug - great instructive video - thumbs up just by the way - I was told it was a olive = you call it a ferrel ( same thing ) I found if I work carefully - with a small hack saw - ( dremel tool if one has it ) I can cut the ferrel ( I cut at an angle not in same line as pipe - but circa at 45 degree to the pipe ) when close to cutting through I stop - grab a strong screw driver and use it as a lever and snap the ferrel - sorry but that tool you have cost alot to import 2nd point - that white PVC (??) pipe in your video well the end did not seem square ? maybe optical illusion - cause I found that if the pipe end is not square( straight cut not squew ) it will not sit flush to the valve or fitting - thus leaks are more common just my little bit of insight on your great video
@DougForce
@DougForce 3 года назад
@Friendly Garfield Yes, olive is another name for ferrule. I too have used the hacksaw and or Dremel method and it works fine if done carefully. There may be a local version of the tool that would be more affordable. It’s a great tool to have if your do lots of valve replacement. I think the pipe end not looking square was a video distortion but you are absolutely correct. If the end is not square leaks are more likely. Thanks for sharing your thoughtful tips and experience!

I follow a plumber on YT and he always puts a little pipe thread sealer on his ferrules in a compression fitting. I know there will probably be a lot of "back and forth" on this suggestion. However, when I do plumbing, I always want to lessen the probably of having to re-do the job or get a leak.

@A Stanton1966 Yes, it’s definitely a topic that has opinions on both sides. I don’t disagree that it can be helpful and had I had issues with a leak I’d definitely try a little sealer. Technically it’s not required for compression fittings but a little insurance is always a good idea!

Thank you so much for all of the views of the valve and the narration. I’m not trying to replace the valve actually. What I’m trying to do is to replace the fill valve inside the toilet tank, using the 30 second method (in another YT video). But, the valve is one of those oval handle valves and it is stuck. I live in an apartment complex and I don’t care for the workers here. Feels like they’re shopping the place when they come in to repair something. I’m not at all any type of plumber, but I’ve still done some plumbing repairs successfully here. I just can’t get that valve to close. Perhaps, as a woman, I just don’t have the torque or I’m afraid to break the valve, causing a giant fiasco. I also don’t want my downstairs neighbor to hear me doing any work as, she never leaves the house and is the most idle person I’ve ever met. At this point, I’ve simply been pouring penetrant on it and hoping for the best, while the fill valve is still basically operational, albeit slow to refill the tank. Maybe if the penetrant sits on there a few days, I’ll get somewhere - without loosening the entire valve off the wall. Worried sick.
@DougForce
@DougForce 3 года назад
@Private Private I understand completely about not wanting strangers in your home! You can continue to try the penetrating oil and hot water cloth compresses on the value for a few days but if nothing convinces it to turn easily you will have run out of options. Don't feel that it's due to you lacking strength as a woman, it should turn easily and you don't want to force it. Forcing it could break it and as you said, fiasco! Those valves sit in the same open position for years and basically corrode into a locked position. If you have no luck after a few days of spraying penetrant and applying the hot compress to the valve your best bet would be to call management and complain that you can't cut the water off to the toilet. Tell them you had a friend who had the same problem and it flooded the downstairs apartment! That should get their interest. lol They should replace that valve for you as it's a obviously a flood risk if you needed to cut off the water and couldn't. Once they have replaced that valve you can turn the water off and on as needed to replace your fill valve. I know it's frustrating with nosey neighbors at all but you're doing a great job of learning how to handle things yourself and be more independent. Let me know how it works out and if I can help. :)

Any way to get it off if they welded the valve under a sink? I have to replace one under my seink but the metal is melted
@DougForce
@DougForce 2 года назад
@Jose The Don For those you need to use a propane torch. Amazon has them for about $18 plus a $10 propane bottle. You just heat the solder joint then use a pair of pliers to pull the old valve off. You can get a fire guard material to put against the wall to protect it from the heat if needed. Once you have the old valve off, you can replace it with another soldered valve if you like, or switch to a compression fitting or a snap on sharkbyte fitting. Look for videos showing how to desolder copper pipe.

So no need for teflon tape anywhere in this project?
@DougForce
@DougForce 3 года назад
@Roger Lane That’s a hotly debated matter of preference. Technically you don’t “need” Teflon tape on a compression fitting. It should seal without anything but compression. However, Murphy’s law, pipes slightly out of round, phase of the moon, etc can all cause leaks and Teflon tape absolutely helps out in those situations. Some people always use Teflon, or pipe dope, or both and swear by it. Some don’t. I usually start with just the compression fitting but if I have any seepage, I’ll definitely use tape and or pipe dope or both.

Does pvc require an insert to keep the pipe from collapsing? I know that pex does. Also, you should use a few drops of lightweight oil on the compression ring, and threads. It reduces friction and allows the ring to seat much better. I am glad that you didn't use ptfe tape or pipe dope. It disgust me to see people use that stuff on compression fittings.
@DougForce

@Travis k It did not require an inset, I just put the new valve on as shown and it has worked great for months. I’m just not comfortable with cpvc though and am planning to replumb it with copper. Thanks for the tip about the oil. I’ve never heard that but makes perfect sense. Several people have asked me why I didn’t use tape or dope on the joint and the answer is of course that you don’t need them on compression fittings. It should work fine without them. @KanZaman Yes, I think so. The pipe being out of round is a common cause of compression fitting leaks. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth a try as it might work fine - it all just depends. If you do have a leak after installing a new ferrule, take a look at switching to a “SharkBite” connection. They essentially snap on to the pipe and are much mess sensitive to out of round pipes.

If from the center of the nut, you may not have a good compression seal on the ferrule. Look at the pipe where the ferrule is. Is it out of round? If the pipe is not a circle, the ferrule can’t seal it properly. If that’s the issue and you have enough pipe, you could shorten it to a unbent section and try again. If you don’t have enough pipe to shorten it, you might consider switching to a SharkBite type connector and valve. They just slide on and work great especially for problem connections like this.

You are correct, you don’t want to over tighten! Assuming it’s copper pipe, a common reason that would leak with a compression fitting is that the pipe is out of round, or not exactly a circle. This makes it hard for the ferrule to seal. If that’s the case, if you have enough pipe sticking out of the wall, you could use a tubing cutter to shorten it slightly to get a good round pipe and try again with a new ferrule. If that’s not a good solution, I’d look at maybe swapping out to a SharkBite value - they literally snap on to end of your pipe and just don’t leak. Very easy to install. I removed the ferrule from a copper pipe in my bathroom. The first thing I noticed was that the ferrule had been tightened so hard that it deformed the copper pipe. The second thing I noticed was that when I removed the ferrule with the ferrule-removing tool, it damaged the rest of the pipe. I tried to cap it with a sharkbite, but the sharkbite could not get a grip on the damaged pipe, so I ended up cutting off 1.5" of the damaged pipe just to get back to a good copper pipe that the sharkbite would work with. Now I have to solder a copper coupling fitting and 1.5" of new pipe to the old pipe. Did anyone else have this experience?
@DougForce
@DougForce 2 года назад
@Shawn Smith Sorry to hear you had issues. The ferrule works by compression so it’s not unusual for the pipe to suffer some slight deformation but it does sound like the ferrule was originally installed much too tightly. If pulling the old ferrule off with the tool damaged the pipe, I’d say your ferrule was extremely over-compressed! The good news is that it sounds like you have a good plan in place to repair things. If you have soldered copper pipe before, you know it’s very easy. If you haven’t, there are several good RU-vid videos on how to do so. And going back with a SharkByte is exactly what I’m choosing these days as well. Do not attempt to do this if you are unsure the pipe is made of copper, and if you are not a pro. If it is PVC and old, it can be brittle enough to be broken with shear force, which will make distrous situation. You will need to shut off main water valve of your house until the broken pipe needs to be replaced. Most likely you will need to call a plumber to cut the wall out to get this done, as the broken portion is so close to the wall that prevent you from have any joint to grip the broken portion.
@DougForce
@DougForce 2 года назад
@bhbael1 I had no idea this pipe would end up being CPVC as every other one I changed in the house was copper. I’m not a pro either. You are absolutely correct that old CPVC can be brittle and fall apart. Since the water is cut off to the house while swapping the valve, if the CPVC shatters while working or after valve swap, I’d just turn off the main valve again and then address the pipe problem. I agree with your opinion that you should call a professional if you encounter any issue that you don’t feel you can comfortably handle. But if you call the plumber after you have taken a look at resolving it Instead of before you even try, most homeowners can save a good bit of money. It’s always good to be cautious and not get in over one’s head, but it’s good to DIY and learn when you can. Thanks for sharing your insights.

@bhbae1 Sure, there is no issue connecting copper to CPVC though it will require appropriate fittings. That being said, since you already have CPVC everywhere, not just in the wall the easiest fix is to just go back with CPVC. It worked as it should but because of the tight space under my bathroom sink cabinet, it still took me 4 hours to complete the job. Cut my thumb in the process but all is well now. The biggest pain about this job is trying to lay underneath with the corner of the cabinet box cutting into your back. Very uncomfortable and not much room for your arms to extend. A towel worked ok to pad the edge, otherwise it would have been unbearable. Both of the old valve ferrule rings were seized onto the copper. I didn’t want to cut/shorten the pipe, since it only sticks out so far, so the puller was key. I used a new Compression Valve for the replacement, not one of those press on Shark style valves. @Blacky Boi If you have enough pipe extending from the wall, and or the pipe is crimped then absolutely cutting it is a good option. I also prefer soldering copper fittings, but compression fittings are an easy and quick choice to have in the toolbox.

Any way to get it off if they welded the valve under a sink? I have to replace one under my seink but the metal is melted

I can’t get my valve to turn. It’s so corroded. Any tips!
@DougForce
@DougForce 3 месяца назад
@cassiebquerica That happens when the valves sit for years. Usually if you can get a valve to turn after soaking it with penetrating spray, your best bet is to cut it off. Hopefully you have enough pipe sticking out to add on a new SharkByte valve.

The puller tool was a great tip to remove the sleeve. But the first two install ended up with water spray the rear of the valve. I called a plumber and was told to sand the pipe, use sealant and turn the valve very tight. That did the magic. Somehow the quarter turn install doesn’t work for me.

@Dennis Chen Glad you got it resolved! Sanding the pipe is a great idea to be sure surface imperfections don’t cause a leak. Generally you don’t need sealant on a compression fitting but since it was leaking, absolutely a great tip too. Maybe the pipe was slightly out of round or so rigid that extra tightening was needed to get a seal - is it an older pipe? Either way, thanks for sharing the tips and how you got it resolved! 👍

@@DougForce On the last install, I did notice the pipe is not smooth from marks left by previous sleeve. That’s probably why it was leaking and needed sealant. The pipe is about 13 year old.

I didn’t know a could use compression on plastic.

@davidduff9871 To be honest, I wasn’t sure either but it worked fine and still in place. I was expecting copper but was surprised with CPVC.

In a general repair situation I just reuse the nut and ferrule that’s on it. If I do have to remove the ferrule, I have a room that cuts the ferrule. However I need to get a puller because there’s times when you don’t have enough room to cut the ferrule because the nut can’t go back out of the way.
@DougForce
@DougForce 3 года назад
@Josh Cowart Agreed, no need to replace the ferrule and nut unless it was leaking or the nut is rusty and corroded. I replace them if they look bad because it increases the appearance value. The puller tool is much easier than trying to work in a tight spot to remove the ferrule by cutting. I had a few of those before I found the puller tool. :)

@@DougForce yeah the cutter is what our supply house carries so that’s why I have it. As for replacing the nut, it sort of depends on what I’m there for. If they’re remodeling or redoing everything then I’ll for sure replace it. If I can’t get to the ferrule, I cut the escutcheon off which makes it easier. If in there just to fix something that isn’t working then I’ll reuse the nut.

@Josh Cowart Good information. I need to pick up a cutter tool just to have another option. Cant have too many tools! 😀

Live saver! Most videos say to cut off the ferrule but sometimes there isn't enough to cut off and still install a new valve without sweating in an extension.

@DougForce Год назад
@Gawking Watches Yes indeed! I’ve had to replace several that were just barely long enough as is, no room to cut it shorter!

I didn't know a ferrule could be used on plastic pipe.
@DougForce
@DougForce Год назад
@Barnekkid I had to look it up to be sure but it is indeed approved. The ferrule that was there had been in place for at least 20 years with no issues. I replaced it with a new ferrule and no issues this far.
