See how to replace an evaporator fan motor on this GE French door refrigerator to fix a broken fan which will result in the refrigerator will not cooling. Typically when this fan goes bad, the freezer will still get cold, but the refrigerator will not get cold. This is because the fan circulates the cold air inside the refrigerator portion. If your model is slightly different, look up the parts schematic online to see where the fan is located. Make sure to get the fan motor for your model as this fan is specific to this model.

Thank you so much! This saved me some $$ for sure. And it was pretty easy with your direction. Two things to mention for others...the newer part comes with two connectors (got from a GE parts store). When I ordered it there was a note that if the fridge didn't use a 2nd power source for the fan, to just not use it. I wrapped it in electrical tape and just left it. Also, note that the fan may not turn back on after turning the power back on. Do not panic (I did). I tested the fan prior to turning off the power and it worked, so I figured it needed time to just kick back on. That's exactly what happened. I left it "apart" so I could ensure it was working before putting everything back together. Sure enough after 20 min, I could hear it and also felt air when I placed my hand under it. I feel very accomplished! AND it was fun! Thanks again -- the video was PERFECT!

Where was the 2nd fan located in the fridge? Was it another evaporator fan or a heat dissipation fan (i.e., not an evaporator fan) for the compressor? What was the fridge model & serial numbers? Thanks.

Question if I can. Everything was great on the video. It helped tremendously. Unfortunately when I took off the cover to the vegetable tray off, as I was unplugging the harness wiring , the plastic cap pulled off of the wiring on the hot side. Would you happen to know what wires go to what hole in the plastic cap. Nothing broke, it just pulled out. I cannot find anything on which wire goes where and the wire colors don’t match. I definitely don’t want to wire this wrong.

quite helpful. question; haier fridge got warm for 3 days then cold again, temp varies over time of days or weeks, also has random squeaking and other sounds. I found the tech paper when checking the coils for cleanliness. Did the self test and result was E1 = evap fan. ? because it is cold and then warm and cold, is there some problem besides the fan? I Really Hate intermittent problems... I ordered the fan, but I would like to fix the issue with ONE adventure into empty and disassemble, if at all possible. Thanks again for your video, and if you have time to answer this question, thanks for that too.

I just learned this. Its a pain but you must do this. 1st: ensure that it is or is not the fan. That is because the fan may be working, but the vent lines are frozen, blocking the air flow from the fan 2nd: whether its the fan or not. Empty the unit, let it thaw out for 2 days. If the fan is broke, your vents and coils will be frozen. If the fan works, but fridge is not cold, its because your vents are frozen and not allowing fan air into refrig. Its a pain, but if you dont thaw it out, you are wasting money. Thaw it see if air flow is reinstated, if not then replace the evap fan.

@jefferyhaws7565

I had the exact same problem! The problem happened because the drain that supposed to drain away the defrosted water after the defrost cycle could not go down because the drain tube was plugged. That is why it overflows and fills up the bottom of your freezer compartment. This went on for years before I finally decided to fix it. ( I was tired of always busting out the ice every couple weeks) Myself. I could not buy a replacement one so I just cobbled-together a plastic tube and a fitting from my local Ace Hardware Store and replaced it and I have had no problems ever since. I personally think that if you have a repair person that thinks outside the box can make this happen. The repair person I called in did not even think about that because it wasn't just a part they could order has my fridge freezer is too old and many parts are discontinued

When removing the cover the last harness that you disconnected on the left, it goes to another fan. I removed that fan from the styrofoam and can not remember the way it was facing. Should fan face up or down? The part number on my fan is DAZA0515RCU Brand is AVC. I believe this may be an aftermarket part.

Hello, I have replaced this fan before but admittedly put the wrong fan in. I put in a three blade fan and it should be a 5 or 6 blade. A few months back it was making a lot of noise but it doesn’t anymore. When I checked the diagnostic error codes, error code 112, "deli pan fan feedback missing when fan is running" comes up. Can you tell me what this means? What’s happening in my frig is it is freezing the food in the crisper bins and on the shelves towards the back of the frig. The frig is cold, too cold. I did run test 51 (deli/QC fan test) and it came back 0 rpm’s, but I’m not sure how it could be zero RPMs when the refrigerator is still cold unless that tested a different fan. Any suggestions you can provide would be most appreciated. Thank you!

@TheEclecticHandyman
@TheEclecticHandyman 17 дней назад
The model number is typically on the inside of the fridge near the top on either the right or left-hand side on a sticker. Sometimes it will be on the end of the door on the inside as well on older models. Once you have that, try going to RepairClinic.com and enter your model number. This will provide a list of parts specific to your model. From there you can shop around on Amazon or parts stores to find your specific application part. The other way is if you have already removed a problematic part, you can take the part number off of it and buy the identical replacement. Hope this helps! 🛠️

Thank you so much for this. I had no idea how soon I would need this. So A) GE has to know this is a problem. I came looking for this video after B) The fan failed a second time in 3 years. I pulled that receipt. The home call charge was $99.95. They (GE) charged me $116.83 with %25 discount, then $73.60 for the fan at a discount for $55.20. ALL TOGETHER IT WAS $261.05 with military discount for a fan that lasted under 3 years. Last night I got the “2023 improved” fan part from Amazon for $32.95 plus tax minus a %5 discount.

Yeah my fridge is new enough it didn't require the software module update. I've not done it but from what I've seen the update module comes with an ethernet cable and module that plugs in on top of the fridge. It automatically updates after like 15 minutes. I'd recommend if you have a fridge model you know that requires this, to seek out a video on YT or RepairClinic that shows the module update process. Thanks for watching! 🛠️

This video was also for a GE French door fridge, but you'll need to cross reference your specific model to get the correct part. The fridge model number is usually on a label on the inside of the fridge up to the right (or left). Then go to a site like RepairClinic or something to find the correct part numbers based on model number (assuming that's the one you need), and you can shop around to get a good price.

I just have replaced this fan as well because it wasn’t cooling so thank you so much for showing us, however, the cans and glass bottles will have condensation on them and the fridge part gets warm, then after 40 min it gets cold again. Is there a way to limit the amount of times it goes into defrost mode ?
@iSowelu
@iSowelu Год назад
Great video! Looks easy enough, I think. This is literally my exact French door refrigerator (I have model GYE22KMHGES), at least based on the inside portion shown in the video. Mine is the matte graphite finish. I found this video via Google as the 'fresh food' portion (top) suddenly stopped cooling (the adjustable temp lower drawer and the fruit/veg drawers above that are fine, they may be getting cold air from the freezer via other vents). I don't know for sure if it's the evaporator fan, but I am suspecting it. Should air be coming out of the 'Twin Chill' vent on top? Because I don't feel any air at all coming out of there and I cannot remember if air was pushed through this Twin Chill vent prior this issue, or if it's intermittent and I am missing it when it's active. I feel nothing even when you hear the refrigerator 'humm' as the bottom freezer sounds 'on' and you can feel air moving around down there (there is another fan in the back of the freezer, that looks like it's working fine). Also, looking online for the evaporator fan part, there seems to be a newer one that has 6 blades, versus the older one linked which has 3 blades. Not sure which to get if this is indeed the issue. Perhaps the 6 blade would push more air and was upgraded/updated due to the 3 blade being faulty after some time. Hard to tell what is legit these days as there are so many fakes and copied parts sold online. Here's the supposed 'upgraded' part: www.amazon.com/WR60X26866-Refrigerator-Evaporator-Compatible-WR60X10356/dp/B0BG4P9VCS/ref=asc_df_B0BG4P9VCS/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=652579307228&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9068958493129963497&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9004149&hvtargid=pla-2068251188141&psc=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwt52mBhB5EiwA05YKoxfJfo0PP8Z_lLcUsVEpXwH6BLSOx_bCBCA5sn1peJl-YM1r-l_BWRoCEhUQAvD_BwE I am out of warranty, and GE wants $150 to come out to look at the issue, so I am assuming they'll charge tons more for the part(s) and labor, so I was wondering if I should tackle this myself if this is the issue. I already removed the back lower plate and cleaned the coils and the entire area. They were dusty, but not too bad. It's now pristine back there, but that didn't do much for the lack of cooling in the upper part of the fridge. I've had this refrigerator since 2015, no issues, now, all of a sudden, this happens! Any insight on the above would be greatly appreciated - thank you!

@TheEclecticHandyman
@TheEclecticHandyman Год назад
I'm not 100% sure but I do not believe it runs all the time. Reason is, that fan flows the cold air into the fridge. There's a thermostat in there to regulate temperature and if it got too cold shutting that fan off would increase the temp to regulate. You could probably research to find out for sure. Main thing - does the fridge cool and get to the proper temperature. Glad it helped and thanks for watching!

This is true but only for certain models. The model and year manufactured will dictate if it requires a software upgrade (done through a port on top of the fridge IIRC). Make sure to check the serial number and model number of your specific fridge to see if it's required.

@TheEclecticHandyman
@TheEclecticHandyman Год назад
1st off so glad this video was helpful and thanks for watching! Yes I had to replace this fan (and I used original GE parts) 2x within 3 years. The part seems poor to me, or there is something back there (like bad design) stressing the fan and making it have a short life. And yes, when they go bad, that air doesn't circulate and then there is a ton of ice build up back there under that cover. The fan is key to moving the air so that the coils don't freeze over. When I replace the fan I typically open the doors for a day, let everything thaw out, clean it, and replace the part. I'm fortunate to have a backup fridge in the garage (oddly it's 30 years old and is like a tank), so I can let this fridge thaw. Another thing I tell the family to be careful, is the fridge isn't waterproof on the inside so if a liquid accidentally spills behind that cover and freezes the fan blades or other components, I think that hurts the fridge too. One last KEY note, that fan when replaced on certain models needs a program update. Sites like repair clinic tell you to look at the manufacture date and if your fridge falls in that range you have to purchase the update module as well. My model did not require it.

Thanks for the video. Was real helpful. We got 2 different fans off Amazon that matched ours perfect. A little different setup with our fan housing and rubber boot/sleeve. It was a sliver of rubber for like sound deadening. Our's was a toploader. Took about 2 hours. We cleaned EVERYTHING while we were at it and back-and-forth tool fetching. I had to use a little plastic pry bar to help get that back section over the coils loose. It was pretty gummie. We were real careful not to bump anything back there too. Appreciate your help. I would not even know where to start without watching your video. :)

I forgot to mention how long it took to transfer food into other refrigerator, freezer, and 2 coolers! LOL. Add another couple hours.

Glad I found this video. Any advice?? I purchased a similar GE Profile french door refrigerator in Feb 2023. In September, it started making an annoyingly loud buzzing sound. I've had GE replace the evaporator fan twice, under warranty. The same noise persists. You can hear the fan kick on and spin up to speed. The noise it makes has the sound/frequency of a big commercial wood chipper being used by someone down the street. It's hard to have a conversation at the kitchen table. When I bang on that big plastic cooling coil cover, the noise stops for a few seconds...then resumes. Anyone have an idea how this can be fixed? Do I need to add some damping material somewhere on the back panel of the fridge, tighten the condenser assembly, anything?!!! It's enough to cause me to dump this unit and go with another brand. Sorry for the long-winded comment. Thanks.

If you remove the plastic cover at 2:40 and unplug the harness for the fan, does the sound go away or persists? You can do this check in about 10 seconds without any tools. This will isolate if it's the fan or something else.
@grunemann4490

@@TheEclecticHandyman The sound goes away when the fan is not running. I'm going to see if I can pull the fan out of it's plastic housing and run it in isolation. If it's quiet, then I'll try and damp any contact points of the plastics housing it sits in and the coil housing. Thanks for sparking the idea.

My new fan came with thermal grease but it did not say where or how to apply?
@TheEclecticHandyman
@TheEclecticHandyman 10 месяцев назад
Interesting no thermal grease came with my GE evaporator fan for my fridge model. I did find a comment on an Amazon review for a generic version (non-GE) of the same part number explaining how the grease was used behind the sticker on the fan shaft to keep it from sticking, but I can't confirm as I didn't have to do that procedure. www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R3H04U2PWUF2N3/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B071JDY4KQ

We were able to replace the fan without too much hassle thanks to your instructions. Before replacing the fan the fresh food part of the refrigerator would go from 36 to 50 every few hours and then go back to 36. When the fresh food temperature goes up, the freezer temperature goes down. One time to -11. I have freezer set at -2 and fridge at 36. The evaporator fan didn't help. Now I notice that the freezer has a fan that doesn't appear to be turning. Could that fan cause the problem I am having?

Did you thaw out you refrig 1st? If you didnt and only replaced the fan, you will only damage the new fan.

@@beachboy1219 Thank you for your input. We did thaw out the fridge before replacing the fan. Since it was 9 years old, we replaced it with a new one which is working like a champ...for now.

Looks like you have done this before. This is a good video, very informative for helping save a lot of money. Pretty expensive for a repairman to come out and even more expensive to have to buy another refrigerator.

You know me well, yes I had to do this about 4 years ago! I tell you every time I get a fridge repairman, they say, "just replace the fridge." It's like they don't want to fix anything. This part was only $40. Thanks for watching Rita!

Great informative video, thank you for making this. Is that an other fan @5:57? What does that do and if that malfunctions, does it also have the same symptoms as the other fan?
@christopherjohnson5187
@christopherjohnson5187 Год назад
I kind of have the same question! I know that the “other fan” is what specifically blows into the TempSelect Zone/ Cold Food Zone drawers (if you have that feature)…but is this “other fan” the same part # as the main evaporator fan part # you replaced in this video? I noticed my TempSelect Zone fan motor needs to be replaced as well but did not know which part to order (if different than the main evaporator fan motor).

Yes from the parts diagram that is the refrigerator fresh food evaporator cover which includes the damper and fan motor. It is a single piece, and that fan isn't sold separately. It blows air into the vegetable and meat bins in the fridge. I have not had to replace it previously as they stay cold. It's part # WR17X27084 and you can see it here: partsdr.com/part/wr17x27084-evaporator-cover
