In this completely free DIY video we show you how to remove and replace a primary drive auto chain tensioner on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The purpose of this device is to keep the appropriate amount of tension on your primary chain and they do fail sometimes. If that happens, you'll know and you'll hear slapping and banging noises in your primary chaincase.
You'll also need to replace the chain tensioner at some point when you get much higher miles on your Harley. We show you how to inspect the friction point where chain rides on the tensioner. You can see the exact auto chain tensioner we used at the bottom of this article.

Harley-Davidson® Automatic Primary Chain Tension Adjuster - 40063-05B: Get it here: shrsl.com/?dsz8
Yup, we'll show you how to remove your outer primary cover, access the chain tensioner, and remove it. We'll also show you some tips and tricks along the way. Then we show you how to install a new auto chain tensioner.
Note: You'll need a replacement primary cover gasket for this project.
Save yourself a ton of money by not having to take your Harley to the dealership to have these types of projects done. You can do this right in your very own shop or garage and right on the kickstand. Plus, have the absolute satisfaction of wrenching on your own Harley!

Thanks mate, watched this video and then replaced mine. I had 70,000 kms on the old one, I had a dealer change the original one at 60,000 kms. The second one was still serviceable after the 70,000 km mark, but watched this video and put a new one in. Appreciate it.👍

Its a T27 on those derby cover bolts. If someone uses a T25 like you advised they will eventually strip these bolts out. This is VERY important.

I just tried mine to 14lbs at your recommendation and snapped one. It is 125 in lbs for some bikes.

Hi...ran across your channel because i am blacking out my '21 road glide and plan to change out the primary cover from chrome to black From what i got from your video, I may not have to mess with the chain or anything but by removing the chrome cover, it will have oil coming out as the video shows. So I should make sure to have extra oil on hand before doing this swirtch out, right? I'm a female and want to learn to work on my bike so I'm trying to learn all I can. Any feedback is appreciated. 😊 update - found the video where you show how to change the primary cover. So glad I found your channel. Great info!

As long as your taking the stock one out, just put in a PSR manual adjuster and be done with it!

I don’t know why you would reinstall the Harley Davidson automatic chain tensioner. They have been known to over-tighten and and cause problems with the compensation sprockets and transmission Main shaft bearings. I believe you would have been better served to replace it with an aftermarket (Hayden) chain tensioner.

My 15 road glide has throttle lag at low rpms could that be the chain tensioner? Thinking about buying a aftermarket one. My bike has a stage 1

When you do replace the tensioner, would you suggest a SE or the Hayden brand?

If you drive aggressively, don't use the Hayden tensioner. You will get some chain slap to the inner primary. Best choice would be a fixed tensioner and manually tightening it at intervals.

Thanks for watching. We actually run the heck out of our Police service Harley’s in all conditions w/ auto chain tensioner. No problems.

Just a heads up to folks who love their bikes. In my twincam I had chain whine with my auto tensioner. (Way too tight) Now I have chain slap with the Hayden. Never had issues with my Shovelhead as it is fixed. Next oil change I'm going to a fixed tensioner on my Twincam. P.S. I run the heck out of my Govt vehicle as well. (Its not mine) :) They never last as long as POV's haha. Peace Ryan...

I have an 06 Electra Glide with an S&S T111 motor in it...l put the HD auto primary chain adjuster in my bike when it first came out in 06...l beat the shit out of that bike...it still has the ORIGINAL rear drive belt, compensator, chain, auto tensioner that l installed in 06...l have a Rivera Pro Clutch to handle the 120 rwhp the motor puts out...l DON'T do burnouts...yeah someday somethings bound to break !!!

amazing Harley Davidson could build such a solid, bulletproof engine like the single cam EVO 1200, and also build the twin cam with a huge weakness like the poor quality twin cam tensioners. That can destroy the entire engine when they fail. Harley also never formally recognized the problem, but made millions$ repairing there own mistakes.

as far as I'm concerned Harley-Davidson® Automatic Primary Chain Tension Adjuster are junk....keep's the chain to tight , ware on chain , sprockets , and all bearings ( eng.,inner pri.,clutch basket , and tranny ) replace with Hayden M6 ....nuff said
