Glacier Bay Strainer: homedepot.sjv....
In the video I will walk you through how to remove the old strainer and install a new one in addition to testing your work. For my project I couldn't remove the slip nut between the strainer and the tailpiece. I show 2 different methods of trying to loosen the nut without having to break out a hack saw. Believe it or not Vinegar comes in pretty handy on old crusted up plumbing hardware.

Hi Sir. It's 2023, I have MS Multiple Sclerosis and have grip and strength issues. I followed your tutorial and managed to install new basket strainer, it was corroded and came completely free from the basket. It took me several hours over 2 days because of breaks when I was getting frustrated. But test 1 was OK. Test 2 full sink was leaking from the tailpiece ptrap. I can at least use the sink until I get my dad to come get the tailpipe situated better. THANK YOU ❤

I am trying to replace an old pop up system with a simpler push on/off system, which I have purchased from the hardware store. I believe the strainer has to be removed to accomplish this. Am I right? The only lock nut I see appears to attach to a threaded metal pipe which appears to hold the sink in place. The lock nut is fused to the pipe, so I will try vinegar to loosen it. But before I do I want to be sure I’m doing the right thing. Thanks for your excellent series.

So wait a minute.. I’m don’t this right now and after you put putty under the basket rim then set it down and press .. then aren’t you supposed to put silicon onto the rubber gasket that goes up against the basket underneath to ensure a better seal? Can it be done like that or isn’t necessary? Thank you for your time..

@Cogard
@Cogard 3 года назад
Thanks Scott. My house was built in 1928 and I think the piping from the wall to the kitchen sink is very old. I was getting a slow leak from around the lock nut. I replaced the strainer and continued to get a leak. I removed the lock nut and realized the straight pipe from the P-trap to the strainer does not sit flat against the strainer. I filled the lock nut with plumbers putty and tightened it up. No leak. Thoughts?
@EverydayHomeRepairs
@EverydayHomeRepairs 3 года назад
I don't love it but if it works it might hold for a while. are you able to adjust the p-trap at all so that the outlet of the p-trap aligns better with the straight drain pipe coming down from the strainer?
@Cogard
@Cogard 3 года назад
@@EverydayHomeRepairs I don't think so. It is very old. If I tighten the strainer Lock Nut before the lock nut on on the P-trap, the straight pipe will sit flat on the strainer but the strainer will be canted a little.

Cogard, It sounds like the drain/plumbing is not square (level) with the countertop that the sink is mounted to. Anything you do to make it work without bring the drain and countertop level, is going to sound, and perhaps look like, a hack. But sometimes a hack is all you have to work with. Unfortunately, since there is nothing keeping the plumbers putty in place inside the lock nut, it will probably work for a while, but eventually the plumbers putty will begin to ooze out of the lock nut, causing the connection to loosen. Here is a video that describes connecting a P-Trap to the down pipe (outlet pipe) of a Garbage Disposal, using a rubber "Boot" with screw clamps, instead of the slip-joint nut and seal. Your case is similar except you're connecting a P-Trap, to the the sink-drain tailpiece, instead of the Garbage Disposal. Just make sure that one side of the boot is sized to fit the outside diameter of the tailpiece, and the other side of the boot is sized to fit the outside diameter of the P-Trap. Plumber Hacks 101 - Rubber hose vs. Slip Joint Nut - NO LEAKS! || DIY with Michael Borders | 39,310 views | Jun 17, 2018 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5Jv1pkPjxds.html Watch the video. Even if your configuration is not similar to the one shown in the video, it may give you some ideas. Perhaps an easier way is to cut a short piece out of the tailpiece, then reconnect the tailpiece with a rubber-sleeve and screw clamps made for such repairs. In either case, the rubber sleeve, or boot, will be able to flex enough to adjust for the misalignment. Good luck!

@EverydayHomeRepairs
@EverydayHomeRepairs 3 года назад
Hey Margo, not a dumb question. In this case no, plumbers tape (teflon tape) is used. Whenever you have metal on metal with no type of gasket or seal then you need teflon tape. In this case the pvc drainpipe will make a water tight seal without the need for teflon tape. Best of luck on the repair.

Thanks for the video! It was helpful. I was able to get the same strainer, plumber putty, and I removed the old strainer (although it broke but the vinegar trick works great). A handy man came over (called him before I watched your video) and I had everything removed and the new part. He wanted to skip the plumbers putty step but I insisted he uses it. I put it on myself. However, when he tightned everything, the strainer doesn't look centered and I can see a gap on one side although putty cam out of all sides. Is this a potential problem? Thanks again! First time ever I leave a comment.

There seems to be a debate on what gaskets/washers are used where on the assembly. I just replaced both of the strainers in my sink (the old ones needed to be cut off with a multi tool), but the new ones had a rubber gasket and a foam one, where the foam one sat between the strainer and the sink and the rubber sat beneath as it usually does on an assembly. This method still provided a great seal with no leaks and no putty either (manufacturer stated it wasn't needed). Anyways, great video and very helpful!

In my sink. There was no tail piece washer, cab hemoraged badly from years of leaking 87' it was installed obviously a PO got in there and gave a fix lossing parts. Then had a bright idea of venting dryer into cabinet

Really, the dryer exhaust is vented into the sink base? That is a new one for me 😂

The large nut that tightens the strainer to the sink looks really rusted and gummed up with mineral deposits. If vinegar, heat, WD40, the special wrench tool, etc. don't work do I just give up and call a plumber? What do plumbers even do in situations like that?

Bummer, yeah some of these can be really locked up. I think some plumbers might use an oscillating tool with a metal blade or a dremel with a cutting wheel. This guy actually cut off the entire basket with a hacksaw ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zvb3r99N-uc.html Best of luck and let me know how you finally get it off.

Great video. I knew I needed putty but didn’t realize I would need a new compression ring for the brass nut. I just picked up the exact strainer you demonstrated. Haha. Thanks again for the good instruction for this hobby plumber.

White vinegar is available in squirty plastic bottles anyway.

Great video as always!!! This came VERY handy today. The vinegar did the trick. The pipes literally crumbled!!! I replaced the tubes and then saw that the strainer is leaking. I’ll replaced that another day. ^_^

Do we have to let the plumber putty harden for à certains time,or can we test it it right away for possible leaks ? Do we know how long before it's hard ?
@EverydayHomeRepairs
@EverydayHomeRepairs 3 года назад
Nope, no need to wait and you can test right away as the putty will not harden other over years of use.

Had to use a Dremel tool to cut the nut off the strainer. Very hard water in South Texas cemented the nut to the strainer. I tried vinegar, CLR, and the sink strainer specific tools - no dice. Dremel cut through it in a minute 😊
