Pool men don’t do it this way. Instead cut the old light away from the old wire. Then tie and tape the new light wire to the old light wire at the pool. Then, go to your box and pull the old wire through until the new wire comes out of the box. Job complete

No mention of sealing the new fixture. When I pulled my old one there was a sealant around the mounting ring. I expect I will need to use some sort of sealant that can be applied while underwater. The problem has been water leakage and contamination. If it is normal to not seal the ring, then maybe I have a crack or other means for water to pass through the housing. Must this require renovating that entire area? Drain the pool etc. I'd like to learn how to determine this.

Make this job easy for yourself, cut the old light cord at the back of the light, secure new light cord to existing cord, making sure not to increase the diameter of the cord. Pull the two cords as hard as you can to ensure your connection wont break in the conduit. Now pull out the old light cord from the junction box and eureka!, light installed.

I believe my niche may be leaking, as the water level dropped to the fixture and stayed there all winter. Now the pool is empty awaiting a new liner. I cannot tighten a (ground?) screw at the back. It just moves around and pokes through when I try to tighten it. I have the deck broken up and can dig down to it if needed. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
@Inyopools
@Inyopools 9 лет назад
+Don Teeter There are two points on a niche that require sealing and they are the face of the niche and the cord hole at the back of the niche. The face of the niche is sealed in one of two ways; for gunite pools the cement is poured around the niche encasing the niche in the wall. For vinyl/fiberglass pools, there are gaskets that seal the seam between the niche and wall. The cord hole is plugged by sealant or a cord stopper. The latter are rubber corks that have a cored hole through which the cord is pulled through. They are available in 3/4" and 1" to fit the standard niche cord holes. These are available in local hardware stores or on our website: www.inyopools.com/parts_cord_stopper.aspx

Is there a trick to removing the seal from the niche? While pulling the new cable thru the connection broke at the last bend of the pipe. This left me with no way to pull the wire back out of the niche without removing the seal. It looks like it screws onto the niche but I want to be sure it is designed to unscrew and replace so that a new wire can be run. Of course the pool is drained below the light.

I am tempted to install a new light fixture myself but after speaking with my local pool store, they said its not that easy. One guy said its his least favorite job to do on pools and he'd rather lift and carry pool heaters all day than install 1 light fixture. Is he being dramatic? It seems easy enough but I'd hate to yank out my old one and then be unable to pull the new one through and now have no lighting fixture.
@Inyopools
@Inyopools 9 лет назад
Eric M I think your technician was being a tad dramatic; by no means is it a walk in the park but it is not something a handy homeowner could not do themselves. Like I stated in a previous comment somewhere down on this page the hard part is pulling the wire through, could be a two-man job. Also, a key is knowing what your current light fixtures is to find the proper replacement size and voltage. Do you have any of that info?
@ericm1232
@ericm1232 9 лет назад
Inyo Pools Yes, I plan on replacing my current 12v 100 watt Sta-Rite halogen fixture with the intellibrite 5g 12v fixture. What sort of situation can I expect to be in given the "worst case scenario"? From what I've been told, you can be stuck unable to pull the wire through and your cord could snap. I'd hate to find myself in this situation and now with a nonfunctional pool light hanging out of the wall that I can't finish hooking up. How do you go about getting yourself out of that sort of situation? Thanks!
@Inyopools
@Inyopools 9 лет назад
Eric M Worst case scenario? You have a StaRite/Swimquip light that uses a uniquely sized niche, meaning you have to renovate the light area to get a new light to fit. Now that is a pain! In terms of your light cord situation, you would have to dig down to the conduit and find the sticking point of the light cord to free it.
@DonTeeter
@DonTeeter 9 лет назад
Inyo Pools Please explain how having a StaRite / Swimquip light is a worst case scenario. My house is fifty years old and the pool might be too (I don't know), and I need to replace the old Swimquip light. Is there a chance that the replacement fixture I order will not fit? The rings seem the same size to me.
@Inyopools
@Inyopools 9 лет назад
+Don Teeter As we stated above the Swimquip light is a unique size with a matching niche so if you do not replace the light with another Swimquiplight it will not fit. Anytime a homeowner needs to modify their pool wall to change a niche just for a new pool light, that is a worst case scenario. You could be adding a few hundred dollars or more to an install of a light if you have to adjust a niche.

I have a 120v Pentair that I want to replace with a Pentair 601106. I have a junction box several feet behind the pool where the light wire is spliced with another run that goes to a Intermatic auto-timer and GCF breaker beyond that. If I mount a 300w rated transformer next to the timer, can I reuse the long run of electrical wire between the timer and the junction box mentioned above and just pull the new light cable up the conduit to the junction box and make the connection there as long as I epoxy from the pool side and make sure the junction and splices are protected from moisture. i.e. can the existing outdoor 120v wiring be used on the 12v side between light wire connection and transformer?

@Inyopools
@Inyopools 9 лет назад
martin rios I have experienced this a time or two while installing lights and there are a couple ways to handle it. First off, the issue likely stems from a 90 degree turn that the cable is stuck on. 1st option: Brute Strength. I had to get into the pull put place both feet on opposite sides of the niche and yank it with all my strength. If the cable is really stuck you may need two people pulling. 2nd option: If pulling the cable does not work, dig down to the 90 degree elbow to free the cable.

@Inyopools

A putty or an epoxy can be used to seal the niche's conduit hole. But a cleaner, less annoying option to remove later is a cord stopper. A cord stopper looks like a rubber cork is a hole drilled through the middle for the light cable to thread through.

I have a old hard cable in my conduit. My repair guy could not pull it through. This is now on me to solve. Is their a liquid lubricant that I can pour down the conduit to completely lube the old cable before I pull? I am thinking of liquid soap. I am setting up a leverage pulling pry to maximize the pull force. I am at the last ditch effort on this old cable removal. I can find lots of videos on easy replacements. Any ideas on removing old cable that is doing two 90* bends? I may be patching my light hole if it fails. A Floating light is not really what I want. but if the old cable is stuck, I may have no options. Any experience with problem cable removal?

There are silicone liquid lubes that you could pour down the conduit. But I am not sure how that would affect the water and how easily you could remove it. We use a silicone spray on the new cable as you are pulling it through to help avoid any hangups. - MGS
@Montery12

You may have solved your issue already. You might've bulked up your connector between the old and new cable and is getting stuck in the conduit. I would pull my new cable going in back out carefully and recheck my wire attachments; they should be tight, secure, smooth or flat (no knots or bulks). Add more grease on new cable as needed. One trick is to wiggle the cord or pull it up and down slightly as you're pulling up from the JBox to loosen it. If it doesn't work, get someone to push in new cable from spa as you pull up (make sure all related power is turned off at the main and don't do this in the rain either, even if the power is off, possibility of lighting lol).

My only problem is that I had pulled on the ground wire not knowing that it was attached at the housing support. So now either I replace that grounding wire as well or just not install it. It was put in there, from what I am told, as a secondary grounding source. The light wiring already has a ground so it seems redundant to me. I have over 150' of cabling to pull through. Do you think that I could rent a fishing line, like what you have shown? I know I can buy it from Home Depot but I didn't want to spend that kind of money only to use it once.

We chose the two step process for the video because there is a possibility that one of the ties could come loose while pulling through, leaving it stranded. We chose the two step process for the novice installers.

Inyo Pools You don't think that linking the cables together with the same loop you made in the video would make a stronger fishing cable than a kit string? It seems like the cable could be less painful when pulling than the string as well.

Inyo Pools Your video was very helpful. I barrowed the wire looping idea from you, but connected it to the new light fixture cable instead of a string. Immediately I ran into problems due to the splice being to big to pass the niche. So what I did was cut the ground wires and hoop the neg and pos wires together individually and staggered them just enough for them not to be right next to each other. After that, the cable pulled through so smooth I didn't need any help from a buddy to feed it through! Thanks

One of the BIGGEST MOST IMORTANT THINGS YOU SHOULD DO, that was NOT even mentioned in the video is, REPLACE THE GASKET WITH A BRAND NEW ONE! SHOCKING, VERY SHOCKING, that this lifesaving step was NOT mentioned in the video. ONLY A FOOL, replaces a pool light without replacing it with a new gasket every single time.

We are replacing the whole light fixture, not replacing the bulb. You are correct that when replacing a bulb you would need to replace the gasket. It protects the bulbs and swimmers. But in this case, we are switching out an entire fixture, neither light is being opened, therefore no gasket requires replacement. - MGS

What do you do if the string breaks as you’re pulling out the old light? I have no idea how to get the new cable back to the breaker now.

I would think you need to get a metal fish tape. Push it through the conduit until it comes out the other end, then attach your pool light wires to the end and pull the wires back through the conduit.

@@klh6729 Yes, that's what I ended up doing and it worked just fine. I just wasn't sure if the fish tape would be too big for the conduit.
