lol I feel validated! Doing a rack job on this is a pain. Filming it got taxing. I couldn't find another vid on YT about it, so I felt obligated.

Hey Brian! First, THANK YOU so much for taking the time to help the DIY-ers like me. I studied and watch this video and was able to complete the job because of you and those savior wrenches. I'm learning alot from watching your videos. They are extremely helpful and educational. You are AWESOME!

Dude! Your videos are first rate. Anyone complaining about shaky footage is simply not worth your time. I appreciate the effort to help backyard mechanics like me who enjoy working on our own vehicles for the satisfaction of it and to save a bit of coin. I have an 06 Accord with 450,000 k and I don’t think I’d spend the $ to do this job at a shop given there’s lots to fix on the old gal and I’d like to keep her. So cheers! and keep up the good work!

One tip is to take pictures of anything that you are about to open/remove. Label those nuts with tape and place them into the part's holes. LOL starting at 22:27 !!! Starting at 28:30 is the maneuvering of taking out the rack & pinion. At 29:04 is a jack mount point.

hi i know first hand how hard it is working on a project and filming it!, you are doing very very well, especially for working with a cellphone, as to Erick the car guy, first hes is using someone to operate the camera, and that makes it 100 times easier, 2 he is using a real camera with lens's, from what it looks like he's camera guy shoots from around 10ft away with a lens that does around 100mm to 180mm and a 4-6 f-stop based on the light

I am replacing my 97 Accord 4-banger right now. It is a little bit easy than the V6. I can get the rack out by only removing the catalytic converter which is less messy than the V6. However, the hydraulic line fittings are in much tighter space than the V6. I could not even get the crawfoot to mount. Finally, I have to remove the inlet hose, fuel line and get access from the top. My arm is bare long enough to get hold of the wrench. I expect as much fun putting it back in the coming weekend.

Hey Brian, I am confused why the power steering pump is moaning, if there is leak in the rack. and air is entering the system it should bubble up to the top in the power steering fluid reservoir, and should not enter the pump. The pump sucks the power steering fluid from the bottom, so only fluid should enter the pump. Unless there is leak in the intake o ring, for which I have seen a lots of posts.

for an alignment I use a thin string masking tape the string to the rear tire if it stretches to the front wheel without any obstructions you streach it and tape it to the front threads of the front tire then you have a true reading of toe in or toe out. also set your hondas to zero toe for tire wear if you dont like the fell or if it wanders slightly toe it in 1/32 of an inch. whitch means the rear of your front tire will hit the string a little more than when at zero which would just touch

I also like that you gather inspiration from Ericthecarguy. I am the same way. MANY MANY videos have taught me things I never thought I would do. My brothers clutch to be specific. (1999 Accord front wheel drive 2.3L 4cyl VTEC). Keep this up and you will be viewed the same way, for seeing the repairs is believing it can be done right.

It was nice to come here and find out what I thought was the problem with my 91 accord. I found the steering too hard. When looking under the hood found the belt broken and laying on top of the pulley. I found someone to put the new belt on and went on my way. There was a noise from the belt but then another noise developed as well as a feeling of clicking, like the turns were having a hard time. The power steering fluid was apparently over filled although no one has put any fluid in. I do believe with what I have seen and heard here that I am looking at replacing the rack and pinion. It looks like a lot of work. Yet this mechanic makes it look less difficult.

You were talking about "toe-in" vs "toe-out", I think it would be toe out on a front wheel drive vehicle and toe in on a "un-driven" axle. If I thought this through properly, it'll work this way. Correct me if I'm wrong.

They pull out. I used to do mobile repair and they didn't fit the spot I put them in unless I pulled them out. I had to fit everything in tight so it would ride OK going up mountains at ski resorts, through medians, and across farmland. I could bend the tabs back I suppose.

Great video Brian. You saying "Speak of the Devil"made me interested in what it meant as well. Looks lke it's short for "Speak of the devil and he shall appear." which makes sense because we say that when the item or person appears as you're talking about it/them. Since you told us about "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" it makes me interested in learning these idioms sometimes. lol

Thank you on your knowledge to film to this while you did the job. I plan to change the rack on my 4cyl accord when I take out the engine/transmission to change my auto accord to a manual along with brake and fuel lines. My question is was the replacement rack oem or aftermarket as I don't think it came up? My car is 300k and I had to change the auto trans at 300k with a salvage yard that is acting up 22k later so I decided to change to the non problem manual

2004 HONDA ACCORD: I'm the life saver and y'all can thank me later. Idc what any mechanic at a shop says or what google tells you, to remove the power steering rack and pinoin on a 2004 Honda accord YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DISMANTLE THE EXHAUST SYSTEM!!! exhaust bolts are a head ache they have to be sprayed with pb blaster and then still they may break then your looking at drilling them out. TO REMOVE THE POWER STEERING RACK AFTER YOU HAVE UNMOUNTED IT AND DISCONNECTED THE LINES, LOWER THE SUBFRAME USING A IMPACT MAKE SURE AND LOWER IT EVENLY ON ALL 4 SIDES AND KEEP LOWERING IT UNTIL YOU GOT ENOUGH ROOM TO PULL THE POWER STEERING RACK OUT. TWO MAIN THINGS TO DO THIS JOB: REMOVE THE REAR ENGINE MOUNT AND ENGINE MOUNT HOUSING AND LOWER THE SUBFRAME. THE ENGINE MOUNT HOUSING THAT THE ENGINE MOUNT SETS ON TOP OF CAN BE REMOVED OFF THE SUBFRAME BY REMOVING THE 4 BOLTS HOLDING IT TO THE SUBFRAME. THESE BOLTS ARE ONLY ACCESSIBLE UNDERNEATH THE CAR SO YOU WILL NEED IT LIFTED OR SUPPORTED BY JACK STANDS. ONCE THE NEW RACK IS INSTALLED IMMEDIATELY SUCK THE SUBFRAME BACK UP EVENLY MAKE SURE THE STEERING PINION SHAFT IS IN POSITION WITH THE STEERING NUCKLE BELOW THE STEERING WHEEL THEN ONCE THATS DONE REINSTALL THE ENGINE MOUNT CONNECT THE LINES AND BOLT EVERYHTING BACK DOWN. YOU CAN LIFT THE REAR OF THE ENGINE USING A CHERRY PICKER/ ENGINE CRANE OR LIFT IT FROM THE BOTTOM USING A FLOOR JACK AND A 2/6 SHORT BLOCK TO PUT UNDER THE OIL PAN AND TRANSMISSION EITHER WAY WORKS I USED A THIN STRAP AND A CHERRY PICKER AND LIFTED IT FROM THE TOP BUT THERE YOU HAVE IT SAVED WHOEVER A MAJOR HEAD ACHE BY LETTING YALL KNOW YOU DON'T HAVE TO TOUCH THE EXHAUST SYSTEM ITS UNNECESSARY AND EXTRA WORK THATS NOT EVEN NEEDED

Make sure you flush all that ATF out of the system. I had to go through 3 racks in three weeks before I learned the hard way to flush the all the ATF fluid out. Not sure why they put that ATF in a Honda rack. I got so good at the removal and installation the last rack took less than 2 hours. I also had the Firestone lifetime alignment service that paid for itself. I use O'reillys Honda power steering fluid it's sold by the quart. Been using it my 89 accord since 92.
