In this tutorial, you will learn How to Replace a Screen in Photoshop.
We’ll go over the general ideas of how to replace the content of a screen on a device, a process perfect for creating mockups of websites or apps! We’ll use smart objects to replace the screen of the device, which will allow us to edit the content at any point later on without having to redo the work again.
To start the process, you’ll want to create a Photoshop document that’s at an aspect ratio similar to the device you want to display it on. Once you have a PSD file of what will be on the screen, save it and open up the image with the device in it.
Go to File - Place Linked and choose the PSD file of the screen. Now use the transform tool to place it above the device and rotate it around to where you are somewhat happy with it. You can also skew the corners if you need to by holding CMD and dragging the corners.
Now to actually cut out the screen. For this specific tutorial, we’ll select the black border of the device as it’s quite easy to discern. Use any selection too of your choice. Once done, select the screen layer and click on the mask icon. Now click on the mask thumbnail and press CMD+I to invert it. Select the mask thumbnail again and paint the parts where the screen spills out black.
Next let’s make a selection of the finger that’s overlapping the screen and then select the mask thumbnail on the screen fill it with black too. You may need to do some touching up here and there to make sure everything is looking great.
When done, you should be at the finish line. Now if you’d like to reposition your image, you can unlink the layer and the mask and move the layer independent from the mask. To change anything within the screen content, simply edit the screen PSD and press CMD+S and Photoshop will update your document.
To further enhance the looks, you can do some of the following: add contrast or play with the levels to make it look like the screen was slightly overexposed and add shine if the photo needs it.
To add shine, simply draw white over the device on a new layer, then right click on the layer and click Create Clipping Mask. Now the shine will be only on parts where the screen layer is.
