Man just took my gloves off to type this, thank you, I did it step by step, it worked flawlessly. What I like about the XJ it’s that there are videos for pretty much any fix. Thanks man.

Y'all are the best. I'm a Guardsman on orders, and my idler pulley in my ZJ went out this morning. The bearing is toast and almost melted my belt. Replacing both parts as we speak. Good thing too because today I wasn't sure I was gonna go home. Thanks again for your fantastic videos that give busy people like myself the ability to fix it themselves 🇺🇸

Extremely clean video with great visuals. It wasn't hard for me to figure out how to loop the belt. I just could not find enough detailed information on the tightening of the tension pulley and the long bolt that changes how far the pulley moves. You know, the bolt that is THISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS long. I knew the jeep belt had to be tighter than usual, but I thought it was extremely tight and it kept squealing. Mine is not as tight as yours, but seeing how tight you made yours def helped clear up how tight to make one in seconds. Thanks for the information video brother!

I did the same damn thing breaking the connector because I was hasty like you and just got frustrated trying to figure it out. The connection has never failed me since I did this same job, just plugged it back in. But when I saw you do it I LMFAO.... That's what we do in our driveways....improvise ! Loved this video--clear and easy to see. Hubby was not sure where the belt tensioner was and we did not have any info--looked on other how to' s but they did not have clear pics. Thanks so much--we love our jeep but have to retire it to just plow snow--because of rust issues.

My 95 xj was different, one nut underneath on the slider one bolt on the top, loosened both and clockwise on the tensioner underneath the psp. Easy peasy. Just fished the belt in and tightened it up. Not sure why everything had to come off for yours. Mine is a 4.0 HO so maybe it's different. Great job Tim, now I have to do the water pump. Gonna wait till I do the new trans, clutch, shifter, and transfer case cable upgrade. I love summer and bleepnjeep! 😁👍👍💪💪

Idk if anyone will see this, but you can get the belt in and out fairly easily without removing the fan shrouds. It takes a little effort, but less than the shrouds. Just did mine and it only took a couple minutes. Thanks for the video guys!

Great vid, Tim. I replaced the idler pulley at the same time, it was $13. Then I stuffed both in the back for trail spares. PS, I write the date on the stuff I replace with a paint pen, so I know how old it's getting.

Worked great as I replaced the pulley and belt. Had a small issue with loosening up the power steering side, but there was a hidden bolt under the front of that same pulley that I missed! Anyway, all good on my '92 2 door Sport, with 82K on it. Thanks for the clarity of the video, as others have mentioned. Very cool, and I'll subscribe in case anything else needs attention!

The one inch deflation is for belts with a much longer gap between pulleys. Probably a foot or two, which is common on most engines. Which such a short gap between pulleys, it has to be much less than an inch. If you get an inch of deflation over a large span, its probably just about as tight as you made this belt.

Hey just a though here i replaced my water pump fan clutch and belt yesterday and so i needed reference on how tight the belt should be so i came to this video and i saw how u tighten it, so i did the same thing but now I'm thinking about the rubber deposit on ur pulleys and i can think that maybe that rubber deposit issue is happening because the belt is too tight wouldn't u think thats the cause? Anyways I still did as u did it, we'll see what happens in hundred miles or so to see how much the belt stretched and if any deposits appear Ill comment results and btw great videos keep them coming.

replaced my serp belt on the weekend on my 2K XJ. No need to remove anything other than the old belt. Book says 180-200 belt tension, but I bet I'd be looking for a new water pump due to a burnt up bearing. Tighten so it's quiet.

I had to replace my serpentine belt on my 2000 Cherokee Sport twice. The thing slipped off and the engine boiled over. So I put a new one on and the pulley wheel of the power steering unit blew apart. So I replaced that and put on another one. I cranked it over and in less than ten seconds the belt flew off. I am at my wits end as to what is causing it.

Am i needing to mess with be tensioner bolt also when i do this?? It loosens without it but i dont want to do it wrong by not doing anything with the tensioner.. was trying to get rid of a a squealand he belt had too much slack in it .. i looked at manual and it mentions nothing about tension bolt or pulley just says to loosen top alternator bolt and loosen adjustment screw thats attached to alternator

There's not fucken way dude. I've had a horrendous screech in my belt amd I've been trying do many things. Eventually figured out the screech was coming from what looked like a misaligned harmonic stabilizer (crank shaft pulley) I could see the belt shaking like crazy going from the stabilizer to my fan so I tried tightening the stabilizer to no avail. Then I thought well what if I tighten it then the belt won't shake, but I was afraid the belt would explode so I looked around online to see what I could find amd I found this video. I followed your advice about tightening and with a squinted eye before turning the key waiting for the belt to explode it started with no screech and runs perfect. Fucking blown away and soo happy now THANK YOU

Great tutorial as always, but you forgot to mention that when you go to the parts store or order your belt online; that there are 2 different size belts made for the 4.0L Jeep Cherokee. One is for the left hand drive Cherokee, and the 2nd is for the right hand drive (which is shorter). I found this out the hard way, figuring that the person at the parts store would know which one to give me. After fighting with the wrong belt for over an hour, and a trip back to the parts store I was given the proper belt.
