How to replace a strut on a 2009 Pontiac G8. I LOVE THIS CAR!!!

There was a roaring and clunking noise coming from the passenger side front wheel. Initially I thought it was a wheel bearing, but after digging in, the problem was the upper strut bushing. Follow along as I replace the shock and the bushing.

I'm 66 years old. I bought a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT new in 2009. As of April 2021 I have a little over 78,000 miles on it. After 12 years it is still my favorite car. I plan on keeping it. I hated to see the Pontiac brand go away, especially a good sporty sedan! Enjoy your G8!

At the way prices are on these cars, it might cost the same to buy it used as it did to buy it new before too long. They don’t give these cars away.

Worn strut bushings are a very common problem on these cars. There are aftermarket polyurethane bushings available that permanently fix that issue. I installed them on my 09 G8. Good to see you already addressed the lower control arms. These were also a common problem.

Every control arm and tie rod end was wore out on this particular. It was the first thing I did when I got it and replaced all those parts. Thanks for the info.

Good call Neal, I'm making plans to do exactly what this guy did on the video, I would like to take your advice though on the polyurethane bushings. Can you tell me where online they are sold as well as how they are described? Thank you for any help,!!

Good video and it never hurts to do an alignment after doing suspension work. However, you didn't disconnect the tie rod ends so the toe should be good. If you had left the camber adjusting bolt alone, the strut could be removed and the reassembly should have kept the camber correct. Insert the two lower bolts firmly but not tight, jack the hub up to simulate the car being on the ground and against the camber adjusting bolt, and tighten the two lower bolts to spec with a torque wrench. With this, the camber should be correct but again, an alignment isn't a bad idea. I'd also recommend using a wrench on the bolt heads instead of channel lock pliers. You might want to do the driver side as well. With those miles and with the passenger top bushing having failed, the driver side is probably bad as well. Thanks for posting.

I 100% agree. I consider it a rule of thumb that anytime you replace parts on your front suspension and depending on your car, even your rear suspension, you should go get an alignment. Especially if you like your tires. :)

Important to torque the bolts to spec when doing this job.

Those Clevis bolts are torque to yield if they are the right ones. No way do you tighten them with an impact.

Whoever put the top but on that strut put it on upside down to the crown is suppose to face up and it will cause damage being the other way

Did you torque the nuts at all or is it enough tightness when using the impact wrench?
@GroundhogzGarage
@GroundhogzGarage Год назад
I would advise you to torque the nuts and maybe even use some Loctite. You don't want it coming apart.

Groundhog, thank you for posting this tutorial! I believe I am having the exact same issue as well and am wanting to replace with new everything minus the coil springs. However I have no idea what other components I'll need to complete the struts. Would you mind listing what they are? I prefer to purchase the highest quality if it will make it a more quality strut. Thank you for any help with this!!
@GroundhogzGarage
@GroundhogzGarage Год назад
It's not a parts intensive project. The strut and if you want, the top bushing are all your need. If you don't have a coil spring compressor, you'll need one of those. Most of the hardware, that you probably won't need, comes with the parts. Of course, while you are in there, you might find that some of your control arms might be worn, or your end links might be worn.

@@GroundhogzGarage Thank you for the response. The strut and bushings i will get. Are there any other "vital" components ( that wear out ) involved that can be replaced or added for protection (boots) ? I unfortunately have to rely on a mechanic to do this and would not like to have to visit the struts for quite a while!
@GroundhogzGarage
@GroundhogzGarage Год назад
@@jackburton184 As far as the strut is concerned, no. I don't dare suggest replacing any of the other suspension parts. That would require a visual inspection, best left to your mechanic.

did you align the top plate properly? the W notch is supposed to be in line with the sway bar end link bracket. if you didnt you will probably trash the new bushing pretty quickly

I must have. The video is almost 2 years old now and I haven’t had any problems.

Did u forget the bottom spring rubber or to do the other side?
@GroundhogzGarage
@GroundhogzGarage 4 года назад
I left the bottom spring pad off because the old one was ripped. Good catch on that, but it wasn’t it.
@rgormley1968

no alignment of the top spring plate? missing lower cup washer?, upper cup wash wrong way round?, could have installed the shock in the upper housing and held in with a few turns of the nut. would have made the lower installation a LOT easier.
@GroundhogzGarage
@GroundhogzGarage 3 года назад
Sorry! Someone already got the answer. I forgot to put the lower cup washer on. I did put it on though. I’ll be doing another mug give away soon. Another pair of hands for 2 minutes would have been easier yet! :)

Love your answer brother the top but was on the wrong way to begin with before he took it apart too just had this argument with dealership as they put mine together wrong and I made them pay dearly after taking it to another dealership well that dealer made them pay dearly
@ryanrobitaille5903
@ryanrobitaille5903 2 года назад
And yes the w notch in the top plate absolutely has to face directly in line with back of strut in certain spot or also causes failure. The dealer didn't seem to think so until they paid
