I already have two Uncle Marks, but I think I just found my third. You just saved me more money than both of those two have in the last few decades I've known them! I just hope I end up with less busted bolts, but that's just wishful thinking.

I bought a 1998 ford escort sedan in the spring of 2008. Sold my 1998 grand jeep cherokee with a v8 back when gas prices were edging $5 per gallon. I said i would keep this escort for a couple of years then sell it. 13 years later I still have it in 2021. mileage is at 199,450 and still runs like new. it's a 5 speed manual and luckily I never had to change the clutch or do anything to the engine or trans other than just normal minor wear and tear repairs. its silver with grey interior. And man I gotta say this is the best car I've ever owned. I only paid $2500 for it with 107,000 miles. this car saved me so much money over the last 13 years I wish I could keep it forever. the interior is in almost excellent condition and paint is really good still. it's just starting to rust very little around both rear wheel wells which i dont mind. my insurance is only $50 per month and gas runs me about $20 every 2-3 weeks. I only drive around 7000 miles per year. I work from home. the timing belts does need changing. I would like to get at least another 5 years out of her, if not more. the most reliable car I've ever owned!

I have to agree with you! Great cars! We had a Escort wgn with the automatic also for a little while. Not totally sure what year it was. Maybe a 1993. Super cheap on gas, and no problems at all during the time we owned it. Car manufacturers need to build stuff like this again. (I guess Honda & Toyota still do)

I have a 98 5-sp. Cost me $500. It, and my Forester are my best cars. It didn't come with a Tach ( A stick without a Tach??????wtf) An instrument cluster from an automatic(with a tach)plugged right in. Had to replace some bulbs. A used clockspring for$46, And a heater motor for about $30. No rust, no leaks. Tires and an oil change. A great little car for less than $1000.

Probably time to add this to my TO DO list, at 160,000 miles. I've owned my Mercury Tracer wagon, new, since 1997. Made a lot of bolt-on mods, did some autocross, camping trips and lots of daily abuse. After 23 yrs, I've decided to keep it, and step-up the mods to stage 3 components. The car has always ran perfect, gets 30mpg, has decent HorsePower, and still looks pretty sexy for a late 90's model vehicle. 97' thru 2000 , Cosworth Racing took over the engine builds,, and Mazda took over the design team. (ZX2 and Probe also) These were basically the prototype and development years for the Focus. Thx for the video,, I'll be paying my mechanic to bruise his knuckles, lol.

Picked up mine at an indoor garage in BROOKLYN NY a 98 with 73k. for $500. I've performed all the work on the suspension and brakes myself. Besides being Great on gas it's a little work horse, keep up on the maintenance and don't beat down on it.
@unclemarksdiyauto

These are great basic transportation cars. Minimal maintenance required. I got mine for about $200, had to door tires, windshield, muffler, rear struts & a battery. Did the work myself except the windshield & muffler. Someone offered me $3500 so I took the cash! This was about 2019/2020. That was very good money for it.

I did mine yesterday & today ... some random guy said in a comment on a video that he put his belt on without removing all the pulleys .......... so ......... I asumed my Cover would have a divider up the middle, then I thought Id cut a strup & remove just the divider ........ but on a whim.... .I was going to cut my old belyt to remove it, but, surprisingly I was able to pull it right out the bottom. - I was so frikkin happy, so I used a ribbon , skinny robe, loosely tied about the new belt & gentoy fed it right up where it needed to go - Fk taking all those pullys of unnessesarily.
@unclemarksdiyauto
@unclemarksdiyauto 2 года назад
Usually a good idea to put new pulleys since the bearings in each pulley probably wont last till the next belt. Same with the water pump. They usually come as a kit. Yes a bit of a pain to change it all, but may save time later. It sounds like all went ok with yours. Take care.

Depends on why it failed. I suspect mine is about kaput (I've got a very light ticking sound from the engine at idle and whilst braking hard) and it only has 125,000

Yes, buy the kit that includes all idler pullies, water pump & belt. It is kind of a big job if you are up to it. A good brand of kit is made by Gates. (I always use them) It is up to you what you buy of course. I am not sure what some of the other brand are like. Hope it goes well, & let us know how it went!

How did you get the old pump out and the new one in? Did you have to take the camshaft sprocket off to do it? Currently trying to do this job myself on a 97
@unclemarksdiyauto
@unclemarksdiyauto 2 года назад
Did this a few years back. Cam sprocket stayed on. Once you have the belt of, you should have access to the water pump. This might be the engine that you rotate the water pump to adjust the belt tension. (I believe the pump pulley is off set) (sorry, this was done aprox 256 videos ago!)

My dad's 97 escort 2.0 timing belt broke today, is this and non interference engine or is the engine trash now? Thank you sir.
@unclemarksdiyauto
@unclemarksdiyauto 3 года назад
If it is the single over head cam engine, should be non interference. This one broke while running. Engine was fine. You can get the belt kit with pullies and tensioner fairly reasonable. Timing everything is a bit tricky if you never did one before.

@businessowner642
@businessowner642 4 года назад
@@unclemarksdiyauto Never been changed, it's the original timing belt from the Ford factory - now 23 years old. I'm thinking 23 years of temperature changes (0 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit where I live) may accelerate the aging of the belt too. At least this is a non-interference engine if the belt were to break.

I was a good car with 125,000 miles (if my memory is correct) A few dents, but ran great! Sold it to a guy that sold it to someone else that beat the crap out of it. I think it is off the road now. If I still had it, it would still be running around. Wish you well on the timing. Do the water pump as well. They sell it as a kit. Pump will be going soon anyway and while your in there, may as well do it too.
