How to Replace a Trailer Leaf Spring | Double Eye Spring Installation on a Single Axle Utility Trailer. In this video we show you how to replace the leaf spring while the axle is still on the trailer and with the axle off the trailer.
All our Specs are Based on Rockwell American Products. See the Operation Service Manual for Rockwell American Axles Here.
www.johnsontrailerparts.com/o...
If using a different Brand of products, Check their specifications.
In the video we installed the nuts for the hanger bolts on the outside, this was done to show you a better view of the installation and we have plently of clearance to the tires so the hanger bolt wont hit the tire even under a heavy load. Typically the nut is fastened on the inside.
Note: This video is used for guidance only, Always refer to the manufacturers installation instructions and specifications.

Thank you for this video. I had a leaf spring snap on me today. Nothing major happened, thank God. You're video made it easy for me to take this task on myself for $90 versus needing a tow and paying someone else to repair my work trailer for almost $500 plus being down for two days. I only missed half of a day of work and I now have the confidence to make a few other repairs. (To the peanut gallery: maybe you should try maintaining your equipment better. My utility trailer is almost 5 years old and on the road 5-6 days a week, 50-100 miles per day. While I did have rust, I didn't bust my knuckles or have to cuss or become a specialized mechanic. This video was intended for someone like myself, as an informative and teaching TUTORIAL.) THANK YOU TO THE CREATOR!

Really good video, thanks! As I was putting the new springs on and tightening them, I wondered if I should really tighten them. If I did, the shackles wouldn't move and this video confirmed to not over-tighten. I have a 3500 pound trailer and broke a spring while driving, what a nightmare! The new springs I got are 2000 pounds each, 4000 pound total, so I think I'll feel a bit better. I was not overloading the trailer, no idea what happened but it was not fun. Thanks!

You're right sir! The bolts go on snug and not torqued. If the spring had a rubber bushing instead of a plastic sleeve, then you would apply a specific torque value to the bolt/nut.

I notice there is a hole in the center (in addition to the 4 holes 9n the cornets) of the spring attachment plate. Do i remove the bolt holding the leafs together and pass it through said center hole?

The Kid in the video put the bolts on the hanger Backwards with the threads facing the tires. This can cause the the threads to dig into the tires very unsafe!!

I'm brand new to trailers, so this is gonna sound like a stupid question. the bracket that's attached to the trailer is only held on by a weld? There are no bolts for added strength?
@nicolathonathan770
@nicolathonathan770 3 года назад
Yes, it’s weld on their. And weld joint is a lot stronger than bolted joint.

This is a nice video, however, the real job is to do it on a trailer that is completely rusted out with rounded off bolt heads you can't get. Anyone can do it with brand new parts!

On my single axle trailer I just have the leaf springs going to the brackets am I supposed to have one end with shackles on it
@johnsontrailerparts
@johnsontrailerparts Год назад
Typically you want the shackle brackets on the rear of springs. This allow more flex in springs
@rotfan77
@rotfan77 11 месяцев назад
How much torque did you put on the bolts on the leaf springs? I only saw the torque on the U bolts, unless I missed it? Thanks
@johnsontrailerparts
@johnsontrailerparts 11 месяцев назад
on the suspension bolts you do not torque down, Behind the head of the bolt it has splines to lock the bolt in and keeps it from rotating. The nuts are lock nuts and you would tighten them down to leave about a business cards width in-between hanger and spring. This small gap allow the suspension to move freely. If you torque them down tight this would bind the suspension up.

Hi there, where abouts did you position the jack to lift the trailer and do the shackle with the axle still attached?
@johnsontrailerparts
@johnsontrailerparts Год назад
You want to make sure trailer frame is held up with jack stands, then using jack to support axle as you replace the shackles.

I’m trying to replace the hangers on my boat trailer but they sold me different size hangers for the front and rear, is that correct?
@michaeldmorrison
@michaeldmorrison 4 года назад
Yes, you can kinda see in the video, the front brackets the entire leaf spring fits into, the rear brackets are about the same width as the leaf spring so the shackle straps will line up correctly.

Can I replace just the centre bolt in the spring
@johnsontrailerparts
@johnsontrailerparts 3 месяца назад
Yes, if your asking about to bolt that holds spring pack together. Just make sure to use proper bolt length for your spring pack. Typically if that bolt is rusted off. I would recommend replacing the springs.

My leaf springs snapped, and I'm going to replace. I have a 5000lb axel and 27 inch eye to eye - and it didn't use a shackle. I couldn't find 5000lb at 27 inches, just at 25 1/4". So I'm 1 3/4 inch shy. My plan is to simply use a shackle to make up the difference. But I'm starting off at an angle, not 90 degrees. The higher the rise, the shallower the angle. And inverse that for a lower rise. I think it's a small enough gap that I don't anticipate any problems in the wheel well. What should my strategy be here? Higher rise and lower angle, lower rise and steeper angle, or keep searching and order exact fitting springs?

You really should put washers under nuts. And shifter? Far out 🤷‍♂️ 😂
@johnsontrailerparts
@johnsontrailerparts Год назад
The hanger kit hardware do not require washers as the bolts are splined to keep them locked into position and the nuts are lock nuts. When tightening down the suspension hanger bolts they are not torqued down as you need to allow movement for suspension so it does not bind.

I don't sit with my legs under the trailer while its jacked either. Its a minor point maybe, but if the jack or stands give way for any unexpected reason, I don't want my legs anywhere under the trailer.
