Listen! My cadillac is stranded now in a walmart parking lot for connective issues. I have a top and side post battery. I had someone replace the negative side to top but hey did not do the positive. The side connection is iffy. Can i get electrocuted for changing my positive cable to a top post adapter if i do this without the battery?

I just had my car not start and was able to get to a store and buy the needed parts. This video made it all happen. I had a loose negative battery terminal and replaced both since I was going to replace one terminal. Just finished and my jeep turned over and sounded incredible more responsive and I fell the jeep is now getting the juice it needs. This channel is so helpful. Thank you all for the effort and time, it's making my life so much easier. Just to note. It cost about 10 bucks to get the parts I needed. Talk about savings. Keep it up, guys!

Thank you so much for recording and posting this! Good camera angle, swift and quick on the remove/replace, and really like the Red/Black posts! Thank you because now I need to do this on my 2008 Honda CRV - I just bought it pre-owned, and the guy helped at AutoZone by bending a penny to allow the clamp to tightent, as it was loose and so stretched out. Saves me $30-$65 at the Garage by DIY.

The wrench is usually 1/2 inch. I work for AAA, and I see these replacement all the time, so here is my input on this kind of battery terminal replacements so that they last for the life of the battery. First off, the terminals are coated/painted. That needs to be wire brushed off, or filed off where the cables have contact with the terminal. "Resistance". Another tip, that flat plate has indentations, if your cables are small, take that plate off and flip it around, it will be a tighter fit. Also if your using dielectric grease, use it on the under side of that plate too, it tends to rust. Personally, i use the anti corrosion felt washers that go around the battery posts. Also, dielectric grease is a non conductive silicone grease. NON CONDUCTIVE, do not put it on wires or electrical connections. its is meant to seal out moisture on spark plug boots, and light bulb sockets. If you do use it, just spareingly, as in vidio.
@charleswidmore5458

So how do the sparks get to my spark plugs with all of that dielectric grease I put on them that came from the manufacturer with the new plug wires?

Actually I also replaced a transmission sensor as well. It’s the first time I’ve had to be my own DIY work. This video made my day. You didn’t need to start the car at the end. I started it and it worked. I knew this was the problem because my terminal was cracked. I would go and pick my son up from school and all of a sudden the car didn’t start. This was the solution.

good clean job with the right tools. Just one thing you might want to suggest is the fact that sometimes the corrosion can go down the wiring. stripping back some of the wiring insulation and looking for that corrosion dust is a good idea. with new terminals and corrosion in the wiring you'll still have the same problem. I had to learn the hard way. thanks for posting the vid.

Great video. One thing I did on my XJ was get some HD ring terminals from Napa and use vice grips to crimp them on to the wires. I heat shrinked the terminal lug (ring connector) to complete the process. I then ran the the bolts for the terminal through the ring connector and tightened it down. Future terminal changes are going to be 10 times easier.

Every other how-to I've found only showed what to do with a single cable. I'm installing a sound system in my 98 and I was wanting to make sure the clamp style will work since it's hard to find something (especially local) that's says it's designed to work with two 6 gauge wires AND bolt down a connector for the amp. I found a terminal locally that's the clamp style with two studs on it as well. I intend to eventually replace all the wiring but that day isn't here yet.

Sears used to sell a very nice battery connector gel that made a good seal over the wires, post and terminal. it was like a very thick oil when you applied it but settled into something more like a non hardening silicon. It kept the corrosion from reforming, kept water and air out and was actually not to hard to remove. A lawn mower tech showed it to me and said it was the best stuff for keeping the connections in good working condition he had ever found.

So you can still start the car with a bad battery cable as long as you replace the terminal?

Thanks for the video. Great timing as I ordered some new terminals just the other day. Now I can use some of that dielectric grease that's been sitting around since I changed the spark plugs.

Thanks a bunch for this vid. Even though I'm a DIY'er, electrical stuff has always intimidated me. My 2009 Accord's positive clamp corroded through and needed replacement. The clamp was attached to a housing that made it impossible to easily remove, so I had to cut and stack like you did. The Honda stealership quoted me over $400.00 for the entire cable. Went to Advanced Auto and got a similar clamp to the one in your vid...cost me $6.50. Followed your instructions, but also had to loosen the cable clamps to provide more slack to stack the 2 cable wires. My wires were thicker than yours, but I managed to get them secured inside the new clamp. Question: there was a bit of wire still exposed from where I stripped the insulation. Is it ok like that, or should I wrap some electrical tape around it? Thanks again.

Thanks for confirming that the cable had to be cut off as opposed to breaking the clamp off. I won a bet and don't have to pay for gas this week!

Great explanation. Would have been great to end the clip with starting the car, just like at the beginning you showed how the car did not start due to the battery ends. But kudos, simple and effective explanation.
