@@g19634 I've seen service technician at Mazda dealership compressed the piston without releasing the bleeder valve nor removing the reservoir cap. I really liked tip #8. What I usually do when compressing the piston, is just crack the cap on the reservoir so the fluid can go back up without building pressure in there. And for those of you that don't have a brake caliper compressor, just use a C-clamp on the caliper while it is still bolted on.
@marzsit9833
@marzsit9833 2 года назад
this can be a problem for vehicles with antilock brakes, pushing the fluid back up the brake lines can damage the antilock module, which is a very expensive component to replace. but, if it's an older vehicle that doesn't have antilock brakes this is what i do and after the calipers are fully retracted, i suck all of the old brake fluid out of the master cylinder and replace it with new fluid before pumping up and bleeding the new brakes.

My top tips. Don't handle the pads with dirty hands. Don't touch the friction material face at all if you can help it. Put grease on anything that rubs together, silicone if its protected with a rubber boot, lug nut torque is important and too much will warp your new rotors, and do not forget to break you pads in.

Hey Chris, I have always done your 10 tips independently. We must both be geniuses. Tip #11: The bleeder nipple can be frozen in the caliper. If so, remove the caliper and empty the fluid. Heat the area of the caliper where the nipple threads into it. The nipple will usually break free. Use a new nipple. Weather the nipple was frozen or not, put some anti seize on the threads and they will never freeze.

Soon as possible after having anyone with an impact gun on wheels I take out the lug wrench and a long pipe for leverage and loosen then tighten each lug by hand one a time. This way if a flat or other service is needed I know I can get the wheels off. They guerrilla at least one lug 90% of the time and if you leave it that way not only can it cause other problems but you will not be able to get the wheel off. I also remove and reinstall any lug locks myself, not letting the impact gun cause damage or over-torque to them as happened once.

The tip over greasing guide pins apparently doesn't work with all cars, i used to do this, but recently i changed pads on my bmw e93 and i read that the manual says do not grease them. Overall helpful video. Can add couple things, as a lot ppl mentioned, pump the brakes after brake job before taking off. Brush good the parts on caliper carrier and caliper where the pad slides against, and use anti squeal paste on the contact areas. Before retracting the cylinder it's good to spray grease underneath the rubber boot. Open the brake fluid reservoir cap before retracting the cylinder, makes it much easier (though pushing out fluid through bleeding valve will do the same). Use copper grease when putting back the wheel, it will prevent the wheel from rust seizing on the rotor, make sure to clean the rotor from any of the grease that accidentally has dripped or sprayed on the pad contact area.

what size is the tubing you use on the bleeder valve?
@crpth1
@crpth1 3 года назад
Usually a piece of 6mm tubing will do the trick perfectly. My preference goes for silicone tubing, majorly for it's flexibility. Whatever the case keep in mind that the tubbing will get harder and brittle over time. Sometimes a very short time. So should be considered a "consumable". Exactly the same for aquarium plastic tubing. It's a good idea to get a roll of it and it's cheaper! In a workshop there's always endless uses for tubing. ;-)

Thanks for your tips which not only provide a very helpful check-list but also generate an interesting forum of further points. My interest concerns rear disc brakes with integrated emergency hand-brake - in particular the inside brake pad which interfaces to the piston. Some pads have small protrusions or pins on their back face which align with matching slots on the piston. Some pads have no pins - only a flat face. My understanding is that the pins are important to stop the piston rotating during driving which would allow the screw mechanism within the piston - which self-adjusts the hand-brake for pad-wear - to drive the pads toward the rotor and therefore bind the brakes. Worse, if anti-seize is applied to the rear face of the inside pad, this will facilitate piston rotation if no pins exist to lock rotation. Any comment? Many cars have no pins on the inside pads to stop rotation. Should they have?

On Honda brake jobs DON'T throw out the little screws. Sure the rotors stay on without them, but you get highway speeds shimmy that ruins the front end and wears out the brakes. Better to replace rusteds (cheap on AMZ) and add a little anti-seize for next removal. There are videos on how to remove stripped screws if you can't get them off. Tip: They AREN'T Phillips screws so don't use a Phillips screwdriver on them. Japanese industrial standard screw takes the driver made for it. The tip is longer and thinner and reaches deeper into the bore of that little screw. In fact many Asian cars use it for body, trim, and brakes so you if you have an Asian car it's probably worth having one in the toolbox. A better fit Phillips is number two because of the narrow point on it. It's not intuitive because the size of the screw head seems to suggest the # 3. Garages ALWAYS throw them out, which is why I learned to do my own Honda brakes, with tutorials from Chris Fix. From now on I'm going to take the screws out first if I ever need the wheels taken off for front-end work so I know where they are after the repair.

Replace bleeder screw if it's corroded (they're so cheap it's good practice) - That way you know you have a good bleeder screw for when you need to bleed it next time (or this time and it won't seize up). If I see it's already been changed recently, then I don't change it obviously.

My 1985 wagon was fitted with new pads when buying. Nice gesture, but driving home, the car started shaking violently: Making room for the new pads, they pushed the pistons back into the crud & rust accumulated over the years. So once applied, the brakes held on, warping the rotors. (hot spots actually, but they´re trash now). When doing a brake job on an older vehicle, make sure the pistons move freely in & out. In case of doubt, overhaul them. You might be the first one bothering..

Mechanics always show a pad with like two metal plates and one chunky side and one narrow side. What part is the brake pad? Need a diagram with arrows, because your pad looked to me like one side was side was totally worn and the other side totally good, but I think I am looking at it incorrectly. Thanks Chris. Noob question but… what do I do with the discarded brake kleen? Obviously I don’t want to pour it down the drain so what’s your best solution for old POL?

I got a question. I did the brake bleeding on my car and was perfect. But I think the brake pedal is too soft or low when I press it. How can I make the brake pedal to not be so low. It works and the car stops but the pedal is low... I also have to say I have repair my car and a friend's car watching your videos. Thank you!

brown rust remover 3m pad in the end of the drill works great for removing rust way faster than wire brush other than that great

Tip #11 I always open the brake reservoir underneath the hood, so I do t have to bleed the brakes. If your worried about dirt getting in there. Well they are meant to handle minor punishment, all of it.

Instead of a bungy i use a length of solid copper wire to hold caliper Copper is easy to bend and twist especially if you heat it with propane torch to aneal it first

Sometimes you don't know what tools you'll need until you hit that oh shit point in a job and realize you didn't have what you thought you did. Those tools vary by car and model, so you'll hit that point eventually if you don't have a full garage.
