Still carving away at my backlog projects. I have 2 of these Fender Twin Reverb units. Both need a total re-cap & tube job. Great repairs on the horizon at D-lab Electronics. Yes, we have a special guest star. The Cookie Monster trying to repair this unit before D-Lab, with the assistance of Spherie. Well, no progress, so he shifted the work my way. Great advice from his electronic sphere. I see many people using a similar device. Now the amp has sprang to life. Next we will rebuild the eyelet board, test all functions. That will be part 2. See you then. Yes, more appearances from this blue guy soon

I don't care what you fix build.... I just enjoy the diagnosis to find the fix. Just like seeing stuff fixed.

I second that thought. I really enjoy the diagnostic journey as well as the techniques used in the physical repair.

I like your idea of J-Hooks. It makes everything so uncomplicated. Terry, you are such a great educator. Each video is an additional lesson in straightforward electronics restoration. Thank you!

I have to give huge thanks to Terry. Been playing guitar for 20 years but never ventured into amp building until now. I just finished my first tube amp (EL84 push-pull). Couldn't have done it and wouldn't even have attempted it without your channel. Legend.

To be honest, i don't know anything about radios and don't care much, but the videos usually turn out to be more interesting than those of guitar amps, so I'm ok with them!

I was a little surprised you replaced those 6L6s with made in China tubes. You know what you are doing so are these a new way to go? They must be up to specs or you would not use them. I trust your methods! Great video! I too like the tube amp projects more than the Ham. I do get entertained from all your videos! Stay healthy!!! If even you have to stay home. Thanxz

If you take out any of the brown coupling caps, test them for value and leakage. I bet they will test nearly perfect. I predict brown turd caps will be vintage tone machines in 10 years.

Terry, I believe some people remove the ground connection to get rid of ground loop noise created by the house wiring when using various equipement connected together. Its insane what people do to get rid of noise.

@pagansforbreakfast I'm really excited about it! It was given to me by a neighbor. I am actually thinking of trying to give it back to them once it's all fixed up. Although, they probably will not take it back. I am sure they will be glad it's up and running again. I intend to document the rebuild on my channel, as well. Thanks for the encouragement!!!! I am trying to get myself to a place where I can start that project. Right now I have one on the bench giving me trouble.... I'm about to do a "no questions about it" Output Transformer check. Even though I am about 99% the Transformer is alright..... It's giving me little to no output troubles.

You know, when you replace Axial lead capacitors with radial type, you really change the vintage aesthetics of the amp. Most buyers look for that and tone.

Great video, Terry! A friend asked me to take a look at his '66 Fender Bassman with the complaint that it seems to get quite hot after use. As I examined it I found that all components were original except for one filter cap that only appeared to be 45 y.o. Also, one of the 6L6 bases was brittle and broke as I removed it. I explained the need to recap the entire amp, but he is afraid that I may ruin its vintage value and collectability and wants to send it to an amp "expert". It seems to me that it is not collectable in it's current state. What magic incantation will the "expert" employ that will maintain the value of this amp?

What good is an amp if it isn't reliable? How often does he use it and where is it used?
@BeachsideHank
@BeachsideHank 4 года назад
The value of the amp lies strictly in its provenance, not the make/ model. What musician of note and fame used or owned it and when? Anything else allegedly about "collectability preservation" is just blowing smoke up someone's ass.
@kevinski5386

Try to keep the tone stack caps and transformers. Those are the primary drivers of the original tone. That’s where the value is.
@Bob-ir2bj
@Bob-ir2bj 4 года назад
If he really wants to keep it as a collectible, he should retire the amp in its originality. Otherwise, update components as needed to keep it safe and reliable. I have a 55 Deluxe that I play occasionally but the filter caps became pregnant and I replaced them years ago rather then taking a chance on causing damage. It still has its mojo and I still have the original caps stored away.

From time to time appears on The Flea Bay the Canadian Heathkit Madman. He sells nice vintage gear... this guy KNOWS what we want... and he charges typically $300 U.S. for postage, regardless of the selling price - and he charges top-rates for the gear. His 'collection' is vast - and isn't used: it's a device used to enrichen himself at the ham world's expense. Right? So... now on the Flea Bay there's a Heathkit 'SB- HW' murderer who's murdering SB-101s, SB-102s, HW-101s, etc... and selling the LMOs! How is this any different than kidneys in China?

I have a question if anyone can help? I have a 3 month old fender hotrod deluxe IV (newest revision) and i finally had a chance to turn it up a bit since my neighbors moved. I turned the clean channel up to about 40% and after a few minutes my volume started to die down then the light went out. I checked the fuse and it had blown. I wasn’t pushing the amp anywhere near a live gig setting but i was running a full pedalboard through the front end and effects loop. I looked over the boards and checked some values and everything looks fine. Going to buy a fuse and try to power it up but I have some concerns that the amp may be defective? Any help would be great.. thanks

Last second comment. I feel moved to beg of you people to come to your senses. Use your socks. Rinse in bucket daily. It won't kill you and neither will the cold that's going around. You think I used disposable diapers on my kids? Of course I did! I'm not crazy. Or wasn't then. We didn't always have the money for them so we made do with cloth diapies that my mom made for us :) PS- Chill out, people
