I replaced the front brake pads on my 2004 Honda CBR600RR. It's simple maintenance, the rear is even simpler.
This video is based on my own opinion so please double check your own work and be safe.
Tools needed:
Torque Wrench (pin bolt, 17 ft/lbs per the manual)
Allen Wrench
Grease (for the pin bolt)
Brake Cleaner (as needed)
Red or Blue Thread Locker
Philips Screw Driver
Rags
New Brake Pads (I ordered mine online)
New Pin Bolt (can be ordered online, you need 4 new ones) or you can re-use the old one if it is physically in okay shape
1. Remove the cap on the front brake fluid reservoir (have rags ready to catch whatever drips out, do not let it drip on your paint)
2. Unbolt the caliper pin bolts (my advice is to remove the top bolt first so that the retaining plate do not fly out or just support it)
Note: Remember which one goes where if you are reusing the pin bolt.
3. Press the old brake pads towards the brake caliper housing (both sides) so that the caliper pistons would retract back in. Just enough for the new pads to fit or if you have a spreader then this would be the time to use it.
4. Inspect the caliper for leaks, the disc for cracks or chips, and the overall condition and tightness of the caliper and brake system. If it is leaking then stop and fix anything you see wrong because it is dangerous to get any motorcycle back on the road that's leaking.
5. Replace the pads
6. Grease the pin bolts (sparingly)
7. Apply thread locking compound
8. Ensure the brake pad "ears" are aligned with the pin bolt and the retaining plate (note: the retaining plate has an arrow for the direction it needs to be installed).
9. Torque the bolt to the right specs
10. Repeat on the other side
11. Place the lid on the reservoir (check level of fluid)
12. Pump the brake lever multiple times until firm feel
13. Test drive nice and slow to make sure that everything you did worked (and it should if you took your time and followed the directions of the manual)
14. Check and re-check for the next couple hundred miles
Enjoy and stay safe!!
