Caution!!!! Be careful, this only works if the spigot is threaded behind the wall. This will not work if the spigot is soldered to the copper pipe behind the wall. If you try to do this on a soldered spigot, you will end up twisting and damaging the soft copper pipe (behind the wall) that is soldered to the spigot. Before you attempt to replace any hose spigot, always find out first if you have a soldered spigot or a threaded spigot inside or behind the wall.
@LegacyHandyman
@LegacyHandyman 4 года назад
True , true. Now only one question: how do you find out if it is soldered or treaded?
@LegacyHandyman
@LegacyHandyman 4 года назад
If you follow steps ,you would have water shut off for the whole house. So nasty leak would only happen if you open it back up.

@@LegacyHandyman This is what I want to know. How do I figure this out if the connection is inside a wall?
@LegacyHandyman
@LegacyHandyman 2 года назад
@@MalSEA It's no way to find out . You can take out brick but if it isn't soldered you just waisted time. So step one try to unscrew .step 2 (if it breaks) take out brick and repair it. Note. Skip step 2 if you got it unscrewed.
@onlimi616

@@LegacyHandyman Suppose the pipe is not soldered inside, couldn't you still have the same problem if the spigot is screwed in tight? It seems as though you need a 2nd person inside the house with pliers to hole the pipe from moving. Not blaming you, but it seems like whomever first installed this spigot did a really poor job and made it really difficult to ever repair. They should've had the pipe come outside the house so that you can unscrew it completely outside while holding the the pipe. I have this problem at my house where the prior owner installed things in a way that's impossible to ever repair, really pisses me off.

Same reason I am having a plumber come. if it's screwable like this, he will have it done in no time. If not, then it may mean having to cut the drywall to get to it. Hope not because the bathroom is wallpapered. If he can cut the wood panel to get to it, then that is what will happen. Can just calk or wood putty and paint around the part that got cut and went back up. Plus, water will have to be shut at main line and I don't have that tool. Live in a townhouse. I can patch a broken copper line, but not going to mess with this. Paying $100.00 is a lot cheaper than doing major damage.

fwiw soldering copper pipe is easy - you'll need prep items like sandpaper, flux, a torch etc - but all told you're talking less than $75 - watch a few quick how to vids on yt and you'll be a copper soldering doctor in no time. get some scrap pipe from your local hardware store to test on and you can save yourself oodles of money in the long run.

I followed the exact instructions only to find out that mine was soldered on inside the wall. I twisted by copper pipe off. Had to call a plumber, 2 hours later, 1 hole in the basement ceiling, and $587 later, I have a new spigot. So, long story short make absolutely sure you have the water off before you try this yourself - because unless you have x-ray vision, that's all you'll be able to do. (I thought this looked too easy to do)

@stephennoblit4529
@stephennoblit4529 Год назад
Hold the end of the teflon tape tightly against the end of the pipe threads with your left thumb. Stretch the tape tightly crossing sharply to the starring threads. Begin wrapping from that point with the tape tightly wound and over lapping about half the width of the tape. The tape should always be wound rightly in the direction the threads are going. (pipe threads always right hand). If tape is not wound tightly & clock wise looking at the end of the pipe it will unwind & may not even enter the female fitting with the pipe threads.

Sure seems a bit nearsighted to not mention to the folks out there (most of us laymen doing our best to get by) that NOT ALL OF THESE FIXTURES ARE THREADED IN. Many, or some are soldered which means a “real repair” is coming that they should be prepared before jumping in. I agree, you’re not going to know until you start the work, but it still behooves you to mention this so that people know they should have some extra money on hand, or to wait until they do. It’s challenging a time for so many right now.

He absolutely wrapped the Teflon tape the wrong direction cause when he screws in the pipe the Teflon tape has a good chance of pealing off the pipe's threads. He should have taped it the opposite direction than what he did. This way he threads the faucet with the direction of the tape and not against it. Whoever said he did it right IS VERY WRONG. I am NOT looking at it the wrong way....you are. Another good idea that will save you $25 or more.....you do not need to shut off the main city water line with a key tool that you have to buy. Just shut off your house's main water valve....doing this is free.

@@SoWillCoGOP I'm not talking about the exposed pipe genius I'm talking about the pipe BEHIND the brick wall, guess you would make the same dumb mistake.

@@saints9532 The pipe attached to the replacement spigot is about 6 inches long. A normal drill bit wouldn't drill in far enough to do any damage, except to the part that you're replacing.

Is that sand grinding in the thread ? Clear it first before screwing new faucet in. Or you have a minor leak inside the wall

Check for leaks inside not outside lol! Pro tip: put some pipe dope on top of the teflon for extra insurance. Also take an extra 10 minutes and solder or sharkbite a shorter fitting so the job doesn't look like it was hacked by the valve sticking out an inch.

You ever seen one that is soldered on the inside (i.e. can't unscrew it)?
@LegacyHandyman

yes I came across few of soldered ones. but I will take my chances trying to unscrew it first, if it breaks, then you would have to take out brick and repair it anyway.

Just wondering why you replaced the entire faucet.Aren't they rebuildable 🤔
@LegacyHandyman
@LegacyHandyman 2 года назад
You can rebuild it in most cases. Sometime valve seat is damaged and it is kind of part of the faucet body, in this case you would have to replace the whole faucet

Teflon wrong direction, you said “check for leaks“ and you didn’t show that, you probably had a leak.
