I didn't watch this whole video, but it looks helpful. However, after just replacing a starter on a 2006 cr-v, I can tell you that it is worth the extra parts removal to just do it from the top. I realize it can be intimidating, but it is just worth it. I struggled with trying to get at the right angles and whatnot from underneath, and it was just a huge pita. I will say that going ahead and taking off the top crossmember that supports the radiator is also worth the effort. It makes getting the intake out much easier, and puts the starter right in your face.

I work for honda for a living I normally do it from the top and most videos are from the top. I wanted to show it can be done from the bottom but it's more of a pain to do it that way on this car. Usually I pull the rad support and the intake out and I can make quick work of them. I wanted to show a different way that's not optimal to be different.

@@Fix_it_Garage Oh, yes, I didn't intend to disparage this method or your explanation of the procedure. I came to youtube to find out how to do it, and saw the different methods, and after giving it a shot from the bottom (simply because the less you take apart, the less chance of forgetting to put something back like it is supposed to be), I'd offer my advice after having just done my first one (and hopefully last). I did see one clip where a guy was doing it from the bottom where he was on a lift. I'm sure standing under would help out. I just don't understand why they design cars with parts so jam packed into them. The AC compressor is even worse on this car... ugh.

@Doug Sholly I've done so many compressors on these things. They just don't give you any room on these cars. New ones aren't much better either. Top is definitely the better way to go. It sucks taking off more parts but it makes it so much easier. Most jobs in the front side of the k series motors are not fun at all.

I did my starter today on my 04 crv. I removed the knock sensor an used a air ratchet and a swivel 14mm impact socket for the long bolt, and a 3/8 air impact and a 17mm swivel impact socket fom under neath. I zip tied the long bolt into the top hole just far enough to be flush with the top starter hole . Install the starter and just snugg the 17mm bolt.😂 Push the long top starter into the threads, cut the zip tie, start long bolt with finger tips. As long it catches a few threads , i used my air ratchet to tighten the bolt.then finish tightening the 17mm bolt, then finis the rest of the installation. This way was the easiest way for me.

Nice! Never did the zip tie trick before thats super clever! I'll use that next time I do one at home! That's awesome!

Wish I’d seen this video earlier! Just pulled the intake off my CRV this morning. Had to remove battery, top radiator hose, intake pipes and throttle body. THEN disconnect a bunch of hoses and electrical connections. So you can slide the manifold out sideways where the battery was. It does make getting the at the starter bolts easier, mine were superman tight…

I mean that's usually how i do it. You can also loosen the front upper core support and that's give you room to get the intake put as well. This method I used is mainly for if your stuff is all rusted and don't want to risk breaking bolts. It's definitely not the easiest way you just remove less parts this way haha

this helped me and i got it done from the bottom. the bolts on my intake were completely rusted and stripped so this way was much better

I'm glad this helped you out! Doing it this way is definitely better then dealing with rusted out intake bolts

Cool thanx for showing us ...props for not just saying its easy its a pain in the ass thats doable.

Yeah. I've done it both ways and I'd rather show the more difficult way and show its possible incase you don't want to take a bunch of extra stuff off

Fuck does this job give me anguish. I started on it yesterday and this is hell. It's minus 14 degrees celcius outside and I'm about to go try again. Thank you for the video.

It's done. I did it from the top. There's a lot of stuff to remove but, in the end, it's less of a pain.
@Fix_it_Garage
@Fix_it_Garage 5 месяцев назад
Smart. On the top is definitely the easier way. The only time I'd do the underside method is if the car is super rusty and your at risk of breaking intake manifold bolts ot other bolts. Also your crazy doing that outside when its that cold out!

I had no choice. It had to work for monday morning.

What size socket fits the knock sensor?
@Fix_it_Garage
@Fix_it_Garage 4 месяца назад
Oh man I am drawing a blank right this second.. its usually a 24mm or a 32mm from what I remember. I stopped memorizing sizes of stuff a while ago haha

@Fix_it_Garage 27mm . Just done a starter on my 04 crv.

@mikehutter7326 that's right thank you for updating that. Been wrenching for long enough that I dint have room for tool sizes haha.

I just attempted this for the first time today on a 2004 CRV with original starter. After the learning curve of how to contort and find the top bolt I was not able to break it loose with a standard 3/8 drive, 8" ratchet. It felt as if the bolt was flexing, eating up all the limited range of swing that was available. What type of ratchet were you using? Not the most comfortable job, but If the bolts weren't so dang difficult to break free, I do think this technique could be done relatively fast.
@Fix_it_Garage
@Fix_it_Garage Год назад
So the better method is to take off the intake manifold. I'm using a flexhead 3/8 about 10" long a day it helps. That upper bolt flexes from the shaft being to long the flex head allows me to get a tiny bit more room to break it free when I do it from.the bottom like that.

I watch this because I need to replace the positive battery cable, the one that goes to the top of the starter. Can that positive cable be unbolted and replaced from below without removing the starter? Thanks
@Fix_it_Garage
@Fix_it_Garage Год назад
You can either remove the starter or the intake manifold to unbolt the battery cable from the starter. There's not enough room to get your hand and a wrench up between the intake and the starter to remove the 12mm nut

So I replaced the starter but makes a odd noise when I start the car. Why it does this sound when I just put a new starter on my Honda CR-V 99?

Describe the noise? Is a loud squeak? Loud Humm? Loud Pitch bark? Details....

Faster to take cross member off where the hood latches the intake next

Thats how I normally do it. I wanted to show another way that requires less parts to be removed, but it's more of a pain in the ass

@Hiram d Jones jr yeah they aren't the most fun in a driveway. When you have a full size lift and the right tools its not that bad lol
@kwsbike
@kwsbike 4 месяца назад
makes no sense unless you have a lift. you don't need to remove the intake manifold , just 7 bolts/nuts and move it out of the way.
@Fix_it_Garage
@Fix_it_Garage 4 месяца назад
There's more then 7 bolts to do it from the top side, but what do I know I've only been a honda master technician for 15 years... 🤣 also if you read the title it specifically says the hard way. Because I've had cars at work with bolt so rusty that I don't event want to try and do it from the top because something will break. This is an alternative if your bolts are going to break and also I clearly did this without a lift just saying. Lol. There's multiple videos on replacing the starting the normal way I wanted to make one showing the harder method, but it's a way that it can be done if there's issues doing it the standard method
@guythecookingsam2588

No Effing way. You sped through so much time. Just do it from the top.
@Fix_it_Garage
@Fix_it_Garage 10 месяцев назад
I sped through loosening the bolts because everyone else does that on youtube lol. Nobody wants to watch me move a bolt with 2 fingers for 5 mins 🤣 Working for honda the last 15 years I've done it both ways multiple times. I mostly see videos on the top side method. So I just wanted to show a different way and I put in the title it's the hard way 🤣
