If you live in a region that gets rust. DON’T try to remove your ABS/wheel speed sensor. It will break inside the unit bearing. Sometimes you can drill it out but you might have to get an entire new hub and bearing assembly depending on how stuck it is. Instead, just simply disconnect the wire from behind the strut tower and you can remove the axle with the sensor still inside as one price.
@RacingRacing-lf3fw
@RacingRacing-lf3fw 2 года назад
If you do break a wheel speed sensor my suggestion is drill a small hole in the remaining part of the wheel speed sensor and then take a self tapping screw what I found works best is a license plate bolt. Screw that both a little bit inside the remaining part of the wheel speed sensor and just pry the old part out both of mine broke off and this is how I got both of them out in less than five minutes
@ryanwilly23
@ryanwilly23 2 года назад
@@RacingRacing-lf3fw this is great advice. When I did this job, both of mine broke off flush with the unit bearing. I was able to do that for the drivers side but the passenger side was completely seized. 3 days of endless PB plaster and yanking on the screw with Vice grips over and over again did nothing
@scottpriest7081
@scottpriest7081 6 месяцев назад
You can also heat up a screw and stick into the broken sensor let it cool and pull it out

I replaced both sides, upper and lower ball joints on my JK, by watching your video....it went well, ran into a snag getting my drive shaft out of the axle...it was frozen at the face by the knuckle, used some heat and persuasion...finally got it free...replaced the universal joints on the drive shafts while I had them out...cheap and easy fix...my hardest part was the press I used and the fender flares...made it challenging getting the top ball joints in... If I had a lift I could use my impact wrench...would have made light work of this. This video was spot on and extremely accurate and informative.... Great video Thnx

Bro. I legit blew out my ball joint yesterday and got crazy death wobble because of it. Talk about perfect timing to drop this video man. Btw that Jeeps passenger side axle seal is gone. You can see all the diff fluid on the knuckle. Def’n needs to be changed but it’s a huge pita to do.

Really awesome video. Most of the required detail without a bunch extra yacking. I had it on my iPad as I did the install. I went with the Rare Parts ball joints. They’re pricy but recommended by one of the guys from Metal Cloak. I did have a slight interference between the lower ball joint and the axle knuckle. The first side just required filing down the grease fitting (cup in this case). The second side (driver side), I had to do a little grinding on the knuckle to keep it from rubbing. One issue that I had that I had not seen mentioned elsewhere, when I removed the first side axle, gear oil came pouring out of the tube. For the second side I drained out some of the diff fluid. It wasn’t an issue for the second side. Install went well and test drive felt good.

Very helpful video, thanks! Two things to mention though, the ABS sensor almost always breaks off when attempting remove it, instead of removing it I unplug the wire and leave it in. Also the axle bearing seals are known for going bad on Wranglers and it looked like you had some differential oil in yours when you pulled the axle out. If they show signs of leaking, replacing them wouldn't take much more work while changing the ball joints. Again, great vid and thanks!
@Willthethrill478
@Willthethrill478 Год назад
When u say “unplug” you mean all way up near frame where the quick connect clip is??? Thanks in advance for answering my question
@Dirtbiker-guy
@Dirtbiker-guy Год назад
@@Willthethrill478 Yes, it's difficult to get to but it's not all that hard. Either way, if you break off the sensor in the hub, you will be unplugging it anyways. If you decide to try to remove it and it breaks off (I've done it) just use a flat faced punch and hammer it in a bit to break it loose, then drill a hole in it and extract it out using a sheet metal screw. Good luck!

better to install the top ball joint first. My ball joint press is hitting the spring (08 lifted wrangler unlimited) and making it hard to use. You can always flip it upside down to do the lower and you won't need to utilize the hole where the upper ball joint goes.
