The 2005 Ford Ranger shop repair manual that I have specifically mentions some things regarding replacing the outer tie rods. 1. CAUTION: Do not use a hammer to separate the tie-rod from the wheel knuckle or damage to the wheel knuckle will result. The manual lists a small tool to separate the ball joint from the knuckle, Remover, Tie Rod, 211-001(Tool-3290-D), OTC equivalent tool OTC-7315A. 2. NOTE - Do not allow the steering gear bellows to twist when the front wheel spindle tie rod is removed. That's because the two clamps on the tie rod bellows need to provide an air-tight seal to protect the interior components of the steering gear.
