If you want to buy an "I AM THE WARRANTY" shirt OR if this saved you a good deal of time and/or money and want to buy me a coffee or a beer, you can do those things right here: ko-fi.com/help...
My friend Kevin brought his 2019 BMW X3 M40i (G01 chassis) over yesterday and we figured out how to change the pads and rotors and put together this DIY video to document the process. This car also has the electronic parking brake which requires a special procedure. I try to keep my videos very detailed, so feel free to skip around to any specific part of the process you need. Hope it helps! Applicable for the X4 (G02 chassis).

Thanks so much for the vid - this was a tremendous help with replacing the brake pads on my X3MC! One thing I realized with the front caliper pins - the spring guides them and if the pin is not in the hole it will knock the pin off center making them difficult to remove. All you do is push the top of the spring (or bottom - depending on which pin) to take the tension off and the pins will pull right out once you start them with the punch. Same goes for putting them in. Just push down on the top or bottom of the spring and the pin slides right through to the other hole. Then just seat it with a rubber mallet. Excellent video - thanks again!

Great video! Worked well for my 2021 X3 M40i. Couple of notes to add: 1. For the parking brake sensor, I had to insert a flat head into the back side to lift up the tab so the sensor can separate. 2. I have the newer screen/idrive. Different procedure to reset the Service Required, Check Control and red Brake light on dash. Very similar. Push start/stop button 3 times while foot NOT on the brake pedal, now you are in diagnostic mode. Then use the BC button on the left stalk to cycle through and/or reset the service required. Great video. I have two questions / comments. This video is for a BMW m only. A X3 xdrive 30i doesn't have the same front calipers. This means you won't have to deal with those pins in the front. Big plus side for me, when I change my pads. The question I have for you is, if you don't engage the parking brake before you change the rear pads will you have to back off the nut for the parking brake? That would eliminate you from having to pull that cap. The rear on the non M calipers look about the same. Just asking I don't know???? I would think if you did not engage the parking brake you would not have to go through the hassle of taking that cap off and turning it back. Now we know why a brake job at the dealer is $500 +
@HelpMeDIY
@HelpMeDIY 4 года назад
Thanks Jay! About the parking brake... At the beginning of the video I make sure that the parking brake is NOT engaged. So no, it does not eliminate the need to pull that cap. Oh, and thanks for the info about the non-M front calipers!

Thanks for the video! I’m surprised no one had any trouble fitting their 17mm open end wrench to hold the caliper pin from spinning when loosening the caliper bolt. I’ve tried both of my Craftsman and one of my neighbors and it won’t go in there. I used a cheap cone wrench for a bicycle and got it apart, but it’s rounded over and now can’t get it back together what with all that factory locking compound on the new bolts. A lot of the processes would be a lot easier if you used the correct tools for the job. Channel locks are NOT the correct tool. When I do this job I will try to use more of the correct tools which will make it easier for people to see and reduce the risk of scratching the paint on the calipers. Yes, it is possible to get the quickjack BL-5000SLX and SLX frame extension, which gives the 5000 the same reach as an extended length model (66” max lift point spread). Though can only reach jack points if put QJ sideways, which is not ideal. The 6000 XLT has max lift point spread of 76”, allowing it to lift the X3 the normal way as X3 lift points are about 70-72” if I recall correctly.

Hey thanks for making this video. a couple questions from when I was working on a 2018 X3 and ran into a couple issues. When retracting the parking brake, I got it all the way to the end stop, but the piston wouldnt retract in when using a c-clamp. I thought it might have been due to the parking brake not fully retracted so i tried rotating it fully counterclockwise, then clockwise again. When that happened, the torx bit on the caliper side was able to spin more and now doesnt hit an end stop. The piston also came out of the dust boot and I was leaking brake fluid ( I messed up somehow, trying to figure out exactly where or how). I ordered a new dust boot and plan to rebuild and bleed the system. My questions are, is the park brake destroyed to where I need to buy a new one or can i somehow tighten the nut on the threaded portion behind the piston to repair it? How can I get the piston to fully retract afterwards so I can get the pads in? Should I open up the bleeder valve to release some pressure in the system? This is the first BMW i've worked on. Other cars i've replaced pads and rotors for didnt have this kind of system.

my m40i indicates rears need to be replaced but not the front. the fronts have less pad material than the rears, so that is rather strange.
@HelpMeDIY
@HelpMeDIY 3 года назад
+m l there is a physical sensor next to the pads that will grind down and the wire inside will be cut. That’s what triggers the light on your dash.
@lucasxulai

how many pad wear sensor do you need if you only change your two rear brakes? I remember there are only two wear sensors one is front one is rear right? just want to make sure I have all the replacement parts. Thx
@HelpMeDIY

+Lucas Xu yes, that’s correct! And it only needs to be replaced of the light came on in your car telling you they are low because the sensors were physically worn down against your rotor.

I saw the option to do it on bimmerlink. I did the same when I changed the brake pads on my Audi Q3, so much easier. I'll change the rear pads on my M40i next week and was looking to see if the process it different than on the Audi, but it seems very similar.

Where is the quick jack point for the front? Thanks in advance
@HelpMeDIY
@HelpMeDIY 3 года назад
+sardonic_ smile_ the QuickJack uses the standard lift points on BMWs. I.e. the small rectangle plastic blocks on the frame
@sardonic_smile_8752
@sardonic_smile_8752 3 года назад
@@HelpMeDIY I was able to locate it through the BMWCC Facebook for my chapter. Actually there is a section of frame, exposed, in the middle of the skid plate. It has 3 holes drilled into it. *THIS* is the "quick jack point". By jacking up from this point, you can place jack stands under the "jack points" to raise the front end. So that you can dismount both front wheels simultaneously.

What is the purpose of messing with the parking brake at all? Why bother to remove the hardware and run it in to stop? Can’t you just swap the pads out without touching it?
@HelpMeDIY
@HelpMeDIY 3 года назад
+Tinkerton82 the new pads will be thicker than the worn ones you are replacing so you will have to make room for them by opening the caliper pistons back up. This is how BMW says to do that.

My front brakes (I believe) are making an intermittent groaning sound, like heavy metal on metal rubbing at low-med speeds (1-40mph) and stops when I tap my brakes. Anyone ever hear of such a thing? It'll do it for a whole day, then stop for a day or 2, then return. BMW doing pads & rotors tomorrow at my request, but techs are scratching their heads trying to diagnose it as they couldn't replicate the sound. Whatever noise I'm hearing at 29:40 is sortof what the noise sounds like.. a bellowing metal rubbing sound. Definitely not squealing or grinding.
