Thank you for uploading this video, it helped me a lot, I just replaced mine found that the dip stick was totally clogged where the lower ccv hose connects to the dipstick. Cut up a coat hanger and attached it to a drill to free it up. Thanks again. ShaQ
good video! I just found I had to replace mine. The car was idling at a standstill, and once I looked around I saw the pcv was choking the hose connected to it. As I squeezed it,it threw out some smoke out of the muffler. I pulled it off and it's grimey. I have the m50 manifold swap, and I wish I would've known to swap this before.
Yeah I know what you mean. It's annoying to re-take everything off when you've did it before... however once you do it like 5-10 times you kind of don't mind it lol. It become 2nd nature and you do it in less than 5 minutes... or at least I can on my M52
Hi, thank you for this video! I have a '97 BMW 523i with the same M52 engine as you and this video really helped! With the 5 series E39, the layout in the engine bay is a little different, and there is a bit more room to work. So in my case i only had to remove the filter housing, and was able to keep the trottlebody in place. Also reaching for the dipstick tube was relatively easy, so i kept the dipsticktube in place and just slided the new hose on.
had a vaccum leak so I smoke tested with a diy kit and there was smoke coming out from the valve so I felt with my hand that the hose from the dipstick going into ccv was cracked and broken so that's why my car started up and completely died second after. everyone I suggest check this hose and see if it's cracked. also my hose that connects to vaccum control module was cracked. the one with a blue stripe
+Bmw M3 e46 ive done a little bit of work since this video. I did a vid on the non return valve and replaced some of this vacuum tubing. And I've also learned what a secondary air injection system is :)
5:37 - sometimes when you are working on your car and making a video things happen. Camera stops recording, fingers are greasy... etc. Not really sure what happened in this instance but I made the edit's as is and figured it was self explanatory to remove from under the intake. Once you had the breather tube, the oil dipstick connection tube off, the nuts removed and also at 5:37 you remove the CCV off the rubber grommet... you simply pull it out. It may take some maneuvering but its not that hard.
Yes sir, click the amazon link in the description and that kit has both hoses. I don't have a particular part number but this is the kit I bought and it fit.
I still can't physically remove the PCV filter from inside the engine area. Do you have instructions or a video on that part - the hardest part? Do I need to remove anything other than what's in your video?? thanks
youre awesome dude wish more people made videos like this and i’ve always wanted to upload videos myself out of frustration of other people not making good how to videos. exceptional!
CCV valve..... continuous crankcase ventilation..... according to BMW literature 'ccv' is the preferred description...... Great diy piece...... very thorough...... thanks......
Thank you for the video, first one i actually seen for the m52. The M52TÜ and newer got a CCV with 4 hoses and are generally not so easy to replace. Now I know you don´t need to deattach the Intake manifold.
thanks for not including the most difficult part of the entire job!!! removing/installing the separator!! fishing the separator through the little passageway to get it out or in was a PAIN. removing the throttle body was also not necessary, i did not.
I'm about to tackle this job, was there any hose clamps for the hose coming the CCV to the dipstick? There's a full kit available that includes a hose clamp.
so I'm currently in the process of m50 manifold swapping my car, but I don't need to replace mine - it's perfectly fine and I have no issues with it - but I had to take it all out to do the swap. What was the easiest way that you installed the bottom hose (the one that leads to the dipstick tube)? I bet it'll be a royal PITA to install, with all the crap around it.
This was a while back. I think I just reached down there and pushed it on. Or maybe I pulled out the entire dipstick assembly and them attached it I don’t remember
Great Vid! I have got the same engine 2.8 e36 yet my is sedan, Well, I just take apart the oil separator and clean, there is nothing to go bad but the plastic pipe that goes to the engine cover. these engine is unbreakable while properly taken care of
Is the dipstick just friction fitted into the oil pan? I'm about to order the parts for this job and see if it solves my issue. Thanks for the tutorial, you are right, there still aren't very many good videos on it, yours is easily the best.
Thanks man. Yes from what I remember from almost 4 years ago is that it easily popped in and out maybe by a gasket? I don’t think there is pressure in the oil pan so it makes sense that it slides in like that
Yeah, my 1997 BMW 328i is smoking like crazy every time I ether accelerate to quick or turn my car on, a chunk of white/blue smoke comes out it's very embarrassing because it smells like burn oil. I was thinking it was a piston ring, but now you got me thinking its the pcv valve..
+leo hernandez been a while since I did the research on this... check forums and article online for other blue smoke white smoke options. If you can pinpoint to the separator then I would say it is easier to replace than piston rings. Took me 2 hours to replace WITH filming. The pros said they would do it in 4 hours
+matt w yes just shine a flashlight in there and see what you're looking at and disconnect the screws, oil dipstick line and pop it out of the grommet and you should be able to slide it out. You may have to remove a support bracket connected to the manifold depending on the style of engine
Ok, cool, thanks. I have all the parts but I've been putting this off because I thought you had to replace the intake manifold, which seemed like a big pita. Now that I've seen it done without doing that it looks like a piece of cake.
Did you have to drain all the oil in the car before doing all this? I hope not I just change mine two days ago and now I found the problem why it’s smoking because of your video. Thanks you please let me know
