Very helpful vid! Thank you. As someone who will usually just "pay for it" I decided to do this myself. You have shown me that its not hard at all!

Good video, but doesn't show removing the caliper bracket. Glad I watched another video and found out I need a triple square socket to remove the caliper bracket before starting the job.

Good video, but be careful to buy the correct rear pads. My 2015 had a different style pad based on the build date and I received the wrong ones from RockAuto. The Triple Square bolts holding the caliper bracket were extremely difficult to remove with the car on jack stands compared to when using a lift that provides additional clearance . Make sure you have a good long handle ratchet for leverage such as extendable ratchet from harbor freight. Anti-seize compound is a must when reinserting the triple square bolts to ensure you can remove them in the future.
@charleshines1553
@charleshines1553 2 года назад
Triple square is not so bad, just clean the head of the bolt out. You want that bit in there as far as it can go or you might be more likely to have problems. I have read a couple horror stories about people breaking those bolt heads or the bit and it is a nightmare to get the bolt out then. Maybe worse than having a car with those flimsy metal caps on the lug nuts and having one of those cursed things come loose from the lug nut and make it at least 10 times harder to get the nut off. Those awful things I mentioned are found on some Chrysler cars. I think they call them acorns. All I know is they are horrible when that cap gets messed up. Why they couldn't use a proper lug nut is a mystery. It would have saved millions of customers from the frustration they cause!!

@@charleshines1553 and they were expensive lol. I remember getting all of them and it was something stupid. Laughable how much 2piece coated crap lugnuts were. I'm about to temp this repair myself, i did my jetta tdi a long time ago... heres hoping

Simple, replace the bolts every brake change as you should thus saving loads of headache.

That's a sweet brake caliper tool-mines like a cube that goes on a 3/8" drive-it sucks buttt works
@charleshines1553
@charleshines1553 2 года назад
You mentioned you have to keep *some* pressure on the piston while turning it. I know a guy who has that metal cube that goes on a socket wrench and has prongs on all sides to fit *most* cars. It really only fits my Passat's rear brake calipers only barely; not enough for me to feel comfortable using it. It also feels difficult to use because it doesn't hold constant pressure. My problems with rear calipers come from misinformed people such as him who tell you NEVER squeeze the rear piston. Of course if you don't push it a bit, it feels a whole lot harder to do than it should be. I don't press on it hard, just enough to make that piston turn more easily. He thinks that metal cube is the best tool for the job but I guess he just likes to punish himself. You would think such an old guy with horrible back problems would make things easy for himself!!! Or maybe he just doesn't like spending a lot of money on tools he doesn't use a lot. Of course he might tell me that only a mechanic would need the proper tools but I don't believe in suffering with trying to use less than ideal tools just because they are used by "professionals". The proper tool is NOT that expensive, there are kits with the same tool you have there on eBay for less than $25!! They might not be the same brand but they are basically the same tool and best of all, not that cube I despise so *VERY MUCH!!!!*

Sil-glide is not meant for brake pads it has a limit to 204°C. You should use brake grease which would tolerate high temperature like K2 CERA HIGH-TEMP or so... Silicon grease is only for slider pins because it would not damage rubber sealers. Beside that misuse the video is generally good. Just more attention to clean the piston before pushing it all the way back to not to push dirt inside too. EDIT: For god sake, hang the caliper using some rope, not to stress hydraulic hose. It's not designed to hold so much weight.

When do change the rotors back there?
@DantheFixitMan
@DantheFixitMan 3 года назад
I usually change the rotors when they are warped, or if you feel a shuddering or shaking when braking, or when they are very glazed (shiny and discolored) from overheating. Sometimes the pads wear all the way down to the backing plate causing the backing plate to gouge into the rotor (metal to metal). This would also require replacing the rotors. The rotors can also sometimes be resurfaced, or cut slightly thinner, but they still have to be within the proper thickness to be able to do this. Thanks for watching! -Dan the Fix it Man

@@DantheFixitMan Isn't there a tool you can use to check the rotor width? I bought a B7 with a 163K miles have no idea when the rear rotors been changed? The rear pads will need changing fairly soon probably with in the next 10K miles.

I am told i need to replace my caliper . i cant find any video someone taking caliper off . is it very hard to change ?
@DantheFixitMan
@DantheFixitMan 4 года назад
It's not too difficult to change the caliper. The process would be the same as outlined in the video, except you would also be disconnecting the hydraulic brake line and bleeding the air out of the system. Some of my other videos show how to change a caliper, or you may be able to find others here on RU-vid that also show bleeding the brakes. Best of luck to you, Take care, -Dan the Fix it Man

@DantheFixitMan
@DantheFixitMan 3 года назад
Sometimes you can turn the piston in with some large channel lock pliers, but it helps to push it in while turning it. You may need to use a C-clamp for that, and/or alternate between the two. Beat of luck to you! -Dan the Fix it Man
