I noticed you let the electrical connections sink down in the tank after disconnection. They can get wet?

Gasoline does not conduct electricity. That is why if you look closely on the fuel pump connection, the connectors are not "sealed" but are exposed.

Do you know what was that red plug you pulled out of the tank is? I found one in mine and I don't know where it goes.

It usually comes with the replacement pump. You don't need to worry about it. I believe its main function is to act as a cushion between the pump and the gas tank.
