Tools and Materials Needed:
• New spark plugs (ensure they're the correct type for your vehicle)
• Spark plug box spanner
• Ratchet wrench
• Torque wrench
• Spark plug gap adjusting tool
• Extension bar
• Compressed air or a clean cloth
Replace Spark Plugs:
1. Preparation:
o let the engine cool down completely.
o Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to avoid electrical shorts.
2. Remove Spark Plug Wire/Ignition Coil Pack:
o Carefully disconnect the plug wire by pulling on the boot (the rubber part) and not the wire itself. If your vehicle has coil packs instead of wires, you'll need to unbolt them.
3. Clean Around the Spark Plug:
o Use compressed air to clear any dirt or debris around the spark plug hole. This prevents anything from falling into the cylinder when you remove the spark plug.
4. Remove the Old Spark Plug:
o Insert the plug socket into the hole, attach it to the ratchet, and turn counterclockwise to loosen and remove the old spark plug.
5. Inspect the Old Spark Plug:
o Check the old spark plug for any signs of wear, oil. This can give you an idea if there's any underlying engine issue. Normal wear will show a light brown or gray coating on the electrode.
6. Prepare the New Spark Plug:
o Check the proper gap on the new spark plug with a spark plug gap tool. Most new plugs come pre-gapped, but it’s always good to double-check.
7. Install the New Spark Plug:
o Hand-tighten the new plug into the engine, ensuring you don't cross-thread it. Once it's snug, use the ratchet to tighten it further, but be careful not to over tighten. If using a torque wrench, refer to the vehicle manual for the correct torque.
8. Reconnect the Spark Plug Wire/ Ignition Coil Pack:
o Reattach the plug wire or coil pack. Make sure the connection is secure. You should hear or feel a slight click when it's properly seated.
9. Reconnect the Battery:
o Once all the spark plugs have been replaced, reconnect the negative terminal of battery.
10. Start the Engine:
o Start the vehicle and listen for unusual sounds. The engine should run smoothly if everything is properly installed. When to Replace Spark Plugs:
Most spark plugs should be replaced every 50000 to 100,000 k.m, depending on the type of spark plug and your vehicle's requirements. Follo your vehicle’s manual for the specific interval.
