How to replace speedometer cable in a Squarebody Chevy/GMC

1973-1991 Squarebody Chevy speedometer cable replacement. This is the same for all trucks and blazers. also GMC trucks and Jimmys of the same years.
The concept is the same for all vehicles with a speedometer cable it will just be a little different.
The dashboard does not need to be removed, But I already had it out to fix my heater box. In a truck with air conditioning, I don't think that you would be able to reach up from underneath as the duct work would be in the way.

Why are you pulling the entire cluster out?! Just disconnect it at the back, takes about 30 seconds...

Would you happen to know if this is the same process pretty much for 4-wheel drive? I have a new process 208 I'm pretty sure the cable goes into that. thanks for sharing!

7 mill will also work to take the dash bolts out

I knew there was something special you had to do to install the cable into the tranny. Thanks for explaining that and posting the footage!

You're doing it the very hard way and you don't even pull the outer cover out all you do is pull the inside which is the cable itself out

I guess there is no way to stop the jerky camera if you are videoing on your own.

It is hard to prevent that. Of course, this was filmed approximately 4 years ago when I was working with a 45$ android with no image stabilization so that don’t help either lol.

Don't, just don't do it this way, take your time and think of how to do it correctly, from an owner of a 1979 Chevy C10 pickup truck, with a GM700R4 transmission which had a four on floor manual transmission.

I'm trying to replace the speedometer in my 85 camaro. It's got a 700r4, but I can't seem to get it off from the transmission, It's a tight spot that I can't fit my hand into and I've tried using channel locks and pliers but those just slip off. Anything else I could try like spraying it with some wd-40 or something?

My speedometer works but above 25 mph makes a noise will the cable be?

Yep. Probably the cable. You could try taking the speedometer out and spraying some wd-40 down it to see if it goes away, that's a good way to tell. Or a temporary fix.

"It" being the top of the speedometer cable that connects to the instrument cluster

This works great for me because my cable is so tight I actually can't even get the cluster to move enough to disconnect it from the top

You don't have to I don't think. I think you can reach under the dash and disconnect it, but it's a lot easier to take the dash off. There's more room to work. Just takes longer
