This week How To, Part Two of our decision to replace our 55 foot Wharram Catamaran's standing rigging.
Sailing and cruising around Japan brings its own rewards and challenges. One of the challenges is trying to do maintenance and replace gear. Japan has all the stuff required but it is either very hard to source and/or it's very expensive.
The choice between new synthetic (dyneema) standing rigging, keeping the old grungy stainless rigging, or go with new stainless was a choice based around our location in Japan's Inland Sea, the time left before we had to re-step the masts and the actual dollar cost.
If it hadn't been for the rather fortuitous meeting with the Australian synthetic rigger guru, Peter Greig, then the outcome would have been very different.

Thanks for sharing this one Daniel. We are planning on doing the same so it's great to get some input from someone with real hands on experience. So true about the unrealistic prices on "marine" items. It is forcing us to consider alternatives in our build (T38)

Thanks for the comment. I bought the DyniceDux (Dyneema Dux) through Hampidjan, commercial pricing and almost 3x times cheaper than what I could buy online at Colligo at the time. www.hampidjan.com/)

Excellent use of low friction rings. I'm using thimbles.
@SeaJapan
@SeaJapan 3 года назад
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I was looking at thimbles as well, but Peter Greig suggested the low friction rings in series to give a bit of purchase, in my case a 2:1 ratio.

@@SeaJapan I need to learn that, Im order thimbles from defender but the are back order. I think ring are better looking, I may do a combination. BTW so much friction when I say I was doing my rig with Dyneema. Your ship looks awesome

Aye m8, you are putting out loads of valuable information here! This is brilliant, like getting the older, more proven, way of rigging back to life. Even though it’s a modern material it must be much more easy to replace with a piece of ordinary line in a serious situation. Like if any accident to a Dyneema stay occurs, out in a storm or whatever, with this system you should be more able to make a temporary fix, right? Did you use your windless for getting tension into the lashings of the stays? Thnx again 🙏🏽
@SeaJapan
@SeaJapan 3 года назад
Hey, great to hear from you MiQ. I kind of like the idea of going back to the traditional methods too. Yes it would be easier with rope to effect an emergency fix. Although the idea of having to do anything on deck above knee height in a storm is frankly horrifying :) But certainly a whole easier and cheaper replacing a stay this way. No I didn't use a winch for tightening the stays, as I don't have a long enough straight line from anywhere on Tiare to the winches. The Dux needs to be handled with respect to get the maximum strength/use/life out of it. So making sure the strands are kept nicely aligned, no kinks and no dirt. Most likely I will make a number of emergency stays once I have a a few pennies again.

Dux = Dyneema I presume?
@SeaJapan
@SeaJapan 3 года назад
@@MiQBohlin Yes. It is the specially treated Dyneema, used for stays, UV & creep resistance. IS quite a bit stiffer than the regular. Heard that Dyneema is not being used due to trademark issues, is why Hampidjan now markets under Dynice (Dynice Dux). Colligo Dux is the same product.
@MiQBohlin

Aha, thnx for explaining details! Love it! This is all very interesting. My idea of using the windless (or a winch) was under the greatest carefulness of course. I just had the idea it could come in handy when pulling quite a distance, like the end of a lanyard from a triple holed deadeye (if I’ve got all the terminology correct). Maybe a block or two would help to give way to a line from the windlass? All of this reasoning is under the circumstance of being singlehanded. I agree on knee level whilst the storm is still live - it was more a reflection on how it could be temporary repaired after the storm had passed. And on a vessel being in not to heavy swells… 🙃

@@MiQBohlin I think it would depend on an individual boats set-up. Although I am sure I could work something out to get the full straight length under tension. Actually the more I think about it, the easier it seems. One of the many fantastic aspects of Tiare, is that I do have the full unobstructed length of the hulls to work with. Great questions!

Hi, thanks for the video. One of the advantages of dyneema is that you can see what is happening as compared to stainless steel. Do you think that the outer sleeving is worth the extra cost, since it hides the dyneema? I'd like to do this to my boat which is in Southeast Asia. Cheers.
@SeaJapan
@SeaJapan 2 года назад
Hi Nick, yes I think it is worth it. The outer sheath shows where the chafe is before it works through to the dyneema. Peter uses black as any wear shows up easily. It also looks smart.

Few people around here would say dyneema is cost effective!
@SeaJapan
@SeaJapan 3 года назад
Thanks for the time to comment. Genuinely interested to how where "around here is"? And why they would think dyneema is not cost effective?
@ewantheboat
@ewantheboat 3 года назад
@@SeaJapan in the UK, dyneema is about 1.5 x the cost for smaller boats ( sub 35 feet )
@SeaJapan
@SeaJapan 3 года назад
@@ewantheboat I can't really comment on anything other than what it was costing me here in Japan. My own calculations had to take in the cost of the product and my time to make it (my time was free). All my Dyneema was either shipped from New Zealand or directly from the dyneema factory in Lithuania through Hampidjan in New Zealand. Would have thought that costs would be even cheaper in the UK being so close to the factory.
@ewantheboat
@ewantheboat 3 года назад
@@SeaJapan it may not be much more expensive over there , I've got no experience with boats that need a lot of standing rigging , but our monohull (33 foot) it was cheaper to use stainless wire
@SeaJapan
@SeaJapan 3 года назад
@@ewantheboat I think it depends a lot on where you are able to source the dyneema and low friction rings from, prices vary dramatically, and the individual boats set-up. Tiare has a really simple rig, and with our location in Japan it was difficult to find replacement s/s wire.
