You will 𝙉𝙀𝙑𝙀𝙍 get the top bolt off the starter in a 4 x 4 following this video. Guess they're just about selling their Chinese parts and hope. Here's how I did it in the street in two hours: I removed the solenoid from the starter with a right angle Phillips screwdriver. Took out the bottom and side bolts with an electric ratchet. Grope around the top for the top 13mm bolt and put a deep socket on it. It's 160 degrees from the bottom bolt. Pop a stubby ratchet handle on the top socket and away you go. Put the new one on with just two bolts like the dealers do who charge $1800 for the job. Use a Chinese part and you'll be doing it again in six months.

Same for the expedition. Took me almost 2 hours just getting that one off. Put it back together but haven’t added that top bolt yet. Need to get some spare time. Hopefully it goes on easier then it came off

So what happens if you don't disconnect the battery and the wires spark together? Did I fry something? Like maybe the starter solenoid?

big thanks but the top bolt was so easy in your vid i actually brought my son to see this ---we both agreed there was no way you got your hand over the exhaust with a ratchet ----I call BS...photoshop maybe -- hahah i know its real but damn that top bolt

ok typically you guys explain very well. and even in this video you explain what "HAS to Happen" but this video leaves out or glosses over important pieces.... This repair is so tricky that UI have to review the videos...I performed the repair 7 years ago....... You don't mention or suggest removing the wheel house splash shield as you obviously have done. and you just walk past the combination of wobbles and extensions need to even have a shot at the top bolt

He's doing it the hard way. Easy way is to remove solenoid from the starter first, then you have more room and easy access to all three bolts. Your welcome

I highly recommend removing the solenoid. I also recommend a stubby 100 click 3/8 ratchet with an deep 13mm socket. It helps get to the top bolt easier

One other thing I did was make a small hook to I could retract the fork when I put the solenoid back in. Old coat hanger worked well

Yeah so.. if your Expedition is 4X4, you will never get the top bolt out unless you're real MF'n patient. I tried six or eight different approaches before finally getting the right angle with both hands and my forearms wedged up in there. Then, the ratchet (I highly recommend ¼" drive) only had about a 2" travel. I GOT THAT SUMBITCH! It took a bit to ratchet that bolt back in but, I got it done. No way to torque it to specs so fingers crossed. If that bolt was easily accessible, I'd have had it done in 1-1½hrs. Instead, it took me four. Once I got that top bolt back in, the rest was a cinch. NO WAY you will get that top bolt off in a 4WD Spent 3 hours trying until i read how @eegg6954 suggested. Will try tomorrow because it late and cold. Rest of Vid Great
