Something I have to do on a regular basis for either web hosting clients or customers that have WordPress sites is troubleshooting their WordPress and Website problems. I felt I've done this so many times I'm sure there are others that need to how to replace the core WordPress files on their website as well. but you didn't deal with the wp-content folder. I'll assume you meant to delete that folder from the uncompress wordpress directory, then move everything across to the public html folder.

Good question. I don't overwrite anything in the wp-content folder as that is where your uploaded content is. Generally when I replace the core files it's because something has been corrupt. If after this step I'll rename each plugin folder to see if one of those is corrupt and then replace that via upload.

Surely you just replaced the new wp-config file with the old one, should you not of excluded that file in the replacement?

No, if you replace that file you will loose your database connection to the site. I do recommend you review that file and make sure there is no inserted code that shouldn't be there. You can of course compare it to the wp-config-sample file.
