I just had the power steering go out in my new car I just got and I must say, this is definitely gonna be a lot easier of a job than I thought it was gonna be! Thank you so much for the very in depth detailed video! Great work and keep it up!
Orielly's tried to sell me two of the same solenoids I told them there is one to the exhaust & one to the intake side by side they kept saying they was both the same solenoids I went to advanced auto parts & bought them & sure enough orielys was wrong so was autozone
Thank you for this video! I try to do as much work on my hhr as I can and I have to say this is easier than changing the damn headlights bulbs 😂. But thank you again. Your video is very clear, detailed, and straight forward. I appreciate any help I can get on this headache of a car
Sad...so sad. For a problem that is so common its practically maintenance. And you have to do all this to accomplish the job. I thought Ford was badly designed. Apparently so is Chevy. No wonder people are buying foreign cars nowadays!
I have a 2006 Cobalt. The steering has no power. No fault codes, fuses are good. Trying to figure out if it is just the motor or motor and module. Any thoughts? Don’t really want to buy the whole assembly if it is just the motor. Great video. Much more difficult doing the repair holding a camera I imagine. Thanks.
I’ve had the power steering go out on my 07 HHR when trying to jump start it using the terminals under the hood rather than directly to the battery in the trunk. Lesson learned. Seems to be a known issue that you’ll blow your PS fuse when improperly jumping. Luckily it was an inexpensive fix.
I changed just the power steering assist motor only and the steering is perfect and steering wheel was shaking while braking , that stopped as well. Need to tell people grease new motor grooves and put new O ring gasket on as well before putting in new motor. Thank you for his video it helped me!!
Power steering lit up when I went to leave , 2 hours after I put the power steering assist motor! I shouldve checked fuse under hood first , it was blown out !! Replaced it ! Hopefully no more problems!
Any symptoms before the steering fails on these cars? Mine is at 93k and I have a weird sound when I steer at slow speeds. Sounds like rubber squeaking against something. It's definitely inside the column somewhere. It could be a failing clockspring or something else, who knows.
@@s33therfan I herd humming when I turn my wheel left or right only happens after driving 10 miles power steering is good no noise from motor hearing the noise on my driving side like direct center trying to figure it out
this is some great how to info, i would like to to add power steering on a Yanmar 240 compact tractor, leave everything the same but just add steering wheel torque. thanks.
Hey, bud thanks for posting this video, for me it is very helpful since I have an HHR and probably gonna do that any time ,,since sometimes I get a message ,, power steering, on cluster
Thank you so much for this video! I have a question, (please forgive me as I am a complete beginner), but as opposed to just replacing the motor, why did you have to change the "assembly"? I am asking because I am preparing to purchase a 2011 Chevy HHR and as it sits, there is no power steering. I have not had a chance to check the fuses, but I am hoping it is just the motor.
99 percent of the time you will just replace the motor after fuses etc have been ruled out. The only reason I replaced the whole assembly was because there was no extra cost. I picked up the whole unit at a pull it yourself salvage yard . Great question and thank you very much for watching.
Thank you for this video ... very helpful!!!.... I have a question...is ok if I drive the car for a couple days until I have a chance to fix it or I can damage something else if I do ?
It should be fine , I know I drove mine for longer than that and there was no known damage. It was just extremely hard to steer. Thank you for watching.
Thanks again for the video. I changed my wife’s power assist motor this past Saturday. It took about 3.5 hrs. Because the bolts are hard to get to and I was out on my driveway. It was about 90 degrees that day but I got it done. It was a good thing I had small ratchets and sockets. Also, the motor assist bolts were very tight and I used “WD 40” and a hammer to get them loose. Thanks again and be safe!
If the motor was the bad component, why did you have to do the rest of the work? In my HHR, the steering has gone out and I am OK doing the motor replacement but not rest of the work.
Yes. basically I purchased this unit from a salvage yard , and did not want to leave anything to chance , so I grabbed everything. 99 percent of the time replacing the motor is all thats needed . Great question and thanks for watching.
I have a 2007 cobalt and it has the same unit. Mine is just going haywire at random, but I lose power steering when it does it. I was looking into doing this same job and came across your video. Very very thorough!! Even if I dont and up doing it I'm happy I saw your video. However, it does leave me with a question. I've seen and been told where the replacement module would have to be programmed by the dealer after installation? Can you confirm or deny?
@@s33therfan People say that its very hard to steer when the motor goes out , i was wondring if simply removing the bad motor eases up on it until its fixed . Thats what i meant to ask thanks .
I did not have to reprogram mine , I believe the car from the salvage yard was a different year too. It could be that your control unit is good and you can swap the motor. Also just make sure and disconnect the negative cable there in the rear hatch. Great question and thank you for watching.
