One VERY important thing to note while doing this. After installing the new belt. LEAVE the altenator bolts loose. Run the tensioner bolt in FIRST. The altenator must be able to pivot toward the radiator...as the tensioner bolt it being tightened. If the 14mm altenator bolt and 12mm top bolt are tightened...you will snap the tensioner bolt as the altenator is set in place and cannot tilt back as it needs to. Tesioner bolt FIRST...gets tension on the belt as altenator tilts back. THEN tighten the 14mm pivot bolt...then the top 12mm bolt.
This was such a nice straight forward informative video. Extremely helpful, now I have the confidence to try it myself. Just purchased an 09 corolla s with 79k. Figured I'd at least do the belt and plugs.
Saved me $250 thank you very much for this awesome video!! This is the best out of the rest of the videos I have searched through. Step by step. Thank you !!!!
great description even included socket sizes and pulley routing. used car for son, pretty old school ,1970's, system which i was not expecting on this car. thanks
Belt will stretch after a few days and possibly squeal. I had to readjust the tension on mine. I just compared the tension of the belt on my camry since it has an automatic tensioner and voila perfect.
I think working from underneath give you more space. Isn't it? I am planning to remove the passenger's tire and under fender plastic cover. I am going to replace water pump too. Also, to have more space, I will remove alternator too.
I got the old belt off and it was still hard coming off. I tried but was unable to slip the new belt over the alternator. I pushed the alternator all the way forward towards the firewall. I double checked with the parts store and I got the correct size belt. Do you have any suggestions. I have replaced other serpentine belts and didn't have this much frustration. I'm about ready to call a wrecker and have it towed to my local repair shop.
I am so glad you pointed that out cuz I have been losing my mind. No one can seem to find an idler pulley for me. I was about to drive up to the Toyota dealership.
@the original mechanic..good video man.. i have a question if i replaced mine but i hear a 2 second squeal every morning..what did i did wrong? is it loose or too tight?
It's to the right of the crankshaft and just above the AC compressor. I put a drawing in the video but didn't show it very well. Check out 4:32. I don't know where you looked for an idler but I have found success at Rock Auto.com.
Question, I changed the alternator about 7 months ago. They changed the belt at the same time but the belt slips every now and again. Do you think I need to adjust this bolt on top of the alternator? Should I add or loosen tension?
my is the same 2010 1.8 i got 3 belts too short or too long , I got the 6PK1230 from autozone is bit too long , and I order amazon 6PK1220 looks like same length space as yours. make I need a 6PK1200 or 6PK1210 ,i used the 6PK1230 the spacer hook thing pass the curve wall spacer.
@@davidhoulden5791Good to know. Thanks! I'll try and take note of that. I wonder if this car has a particular "relearn procedure". Some older Toyotas (and other brands) had such. One had to drive a particular way to get the computer to match up with the engine.
I don't see why the belt and filter would be paired up for replacement. This isn't like an engine where the timing belt and water pump are done together.
The Original Mechanic thanks so much for timely response, your video is very informative and to the point. While I have you here’s another seemingly stupid question, when removing negative battery terminal, does this clear stored car data?I’m fairly novice mechanic
Eric Ozeta no , it will not . Your cars computer retains all important information , so you not gonna loose it , but you might loose your preprogrammed radio stations and might have to manually reset your clock on your dash - that’s it
So once i put in the new belt in i tighten the tensioner bolt first on my mark i made and then i tighten the side alternator second and lastly the top alternator bolt?
Great video! Unfortunately the belt squeaks for a second on start up and if I put on the defroster setting on a cold start. Any idea what could cause this?
Don't quote me, but according to the serpentine replacement for this car, the torque for the three bolts are: (12mm belt tensioner and socket) 14 ft-lbs and (14mm bolt) 32 ft-lbs
i have a rattling noise on the paasenger side of the car. i believe it coming from the engine i have a 2009 corrolla CE. is anyone have this problem. please give suggestion of what might be the problem?
Hello Chelsey I'm having the exact same problem. I'm watching this video now because apparently removing the serpentine belt and running the car will help to see if the problem is with the belt/pulleys or if it's with the engine. I'm hoping my problem is not with the engine. Going to try this process today and let you know but since you commented this 11 months ago I would really appreciate you telling me if you found/fixed the problem!
@@thehousemann hello! So I ended up taking it to a shop in the end bc I didn't have time or trust myself to remove and replace the belt. It was my alternator coming loose! I don't remember the exact term but I got it fixed (should have done it myself because even with the refurbished part it was $$$) and it solved the problem. That vehicle ended up dying for other reasons though unfortunately RIP.
A wise precaution nonetheless. There are often wires on an alternator that connect directly to the battery, and are always hot, even with the key off. A slipped tool could cause a nasty short.
Hazy 407Movement 2 years later I see your comment : but - easy trick for this • hang belt loosely on side • crawl underneath vehicle and start routing belt from bottom up / follow routing sequence - as far as you can reach up • finish from top • 1 / 2 minutes tops • done ✅ easy peasy
