My 1997 F150 needs new plugs and wires according to my local mechanic. He quoted me $450 for the job!! I went to AutoZone and picked up the plugs and wires for $119 and thanks to your video I feel confident that I can do this job. I guess I need to go back and get some anti-sieze grease and diaelectric stuff and maybe a six pack of Bud heavy and I'll be ready. Pray for me.
I think folks come here to get tips & tricks for accessing the hard to reach plugs, (#4 & #8). Although your video was thorough as far as showing what you did, you made no mention of HOW you did it. On my 97 Expy 4.6l, I'm still trying to find useful suggestions as far as how to access #8. You make no mention of extensions used, easiest access routes, etc., and I think that's where this video falls short. Still though, a much better put together video than I could ever do for sure, so kudos.
My 97 had a misfire on 7 too. Bought plugs and wires(needed badly) and when I got to seven the wire was not on tight!!! So much power and running so smooth now. Thank you so much guys!
Well it's 11/20/2020 and this helped me tremendously !! Yeah a buddy donated a 1998 F-150 with a 4.6L V8 Windsor non coil over, and the majority of videos on RU-vid are about coil over system !! THANKS A BUNCH GUYS !😉😉 p.s. He said that a tune up was done before I got the truck ! Reports came back, and the results confirmed that, that too was a lie !! Electrodes on some were completely gone !!
Great video guys not as bad of a job as it looks! yeah it sucks to have to remove a few things to get to them! But it's not like you have to do it every day on your vehicle!
How much dielectric grease should be used on both ends? I just did this today and I got a loss of power after finishing. Could using to much dielectric grease do this? If so how to I remove the extra dielectric grease?
this video just shows you doing, but i dont see how to remove hoow in the heck you can get to the # 8 plug wire, let alone the actual plug. the fuel lines and the rail make it impossible. do i need aftermarket fuel lines? i saw on the passenger side you have some couplings on your hoses down by the #4, like they were extended.
I just put an alternator on my truck today but I'm just going to pay my way out of this headache. 😖 Oh yea, plus I also saved a ton of money by switching to Geico. 🦎😉
I did it without taking as many parts off, I removed the air intake after the air filter all the way to the throttle body. You don't have to take off that power distribution block. Use a 12" wobble extension teamed up with a 6" wobble extension and a u joint for cylinder 3. Cylinder 4, I used a 12" wobble extension and squeezed my hands back there. Little room but i made it happen. Ill post a video soon.
So guessing from the lack of issues these guys had removing the plugs that this engine isn't covered under TSB 08-7-6 or does it look like it had the plugs already been done?
Hey did you ever figure out how to get to 3 and 4? I have the same issue on my 97' Expedition. Did you end up having to cut those hoses and putting a fitting on them?
So basically I pulled all my ignition coils out at the same time and I need a diagram showing not only the routing of the coils but how long each one is. I need to know how long cylinder 1s ignition wire is and so on.
I'm happy my 2000 5.4 in my f-150 doesn't have the plug wires. Just extra stuff to move/work around. I wonder if a little PB Blaster in the back spark plug holes would work to help break the old plugs loose. I didn't have any problems changing the plugs in the in the 2000 and 02 5.4 and 6.8 Superdutys that i had. But these f150s have no room to work unless you disassemble the engine compartment.
I agree the 7 and 8 plugs are a pain to get to. Almost need a body lift to get the room for them. I like the 5.4L but its a pain to work on it. I do like the coil-on-plug coil packs over the dizzy (distributor). 243K miles on my F150 and still going strong. But the body is rusting away. So I get to look for a crew cab F150 4.6L with the M5R2 (not a fan of the auto).
30 minutes of edits you can guarantee if you do this right and you do this safely you will be under here under your hood depending on whether you're doing plugs in coils or not for a few hours trust me it's just the way it is this might be one of the most sensitive things that end up screwing a vehicle up that are cleaning out dust and particles is so important in 3 hours with holes right down into your motor and bolts and parts and dirt in other elements flying around more often than not when someone's not paying attention or rushing they either end up throwing dirt down there old gooped up oil or grease and even dropping bolts and guess what my brother did that I think 20 years ago and chose not to say a damn thing... Well Kiss It Goodbye if you drop anything down there and don't retrieve it...
to get to plugs 4 and 8 sucked, but this video helped with showing to remove the junction box for #4....I didn't see any tips for #8...I think removing the boot was the hardest part for that one. Found plug well for #7 full of water, which was most likely my intermittent miss. Probably from me cleaning the the engine a few years ago. Very helpful video....thanks.
Autozone gave me iridium plugs i installed 4 but the engine runs like garbage so i turned it off and its staying off. It worked fine before with platinum plugs i will be getting those.
I'm having a hell of a time getting 4 out, any tips anyone has would be much appreciated, I need a deep well extractor on it but can't get enough room to pound the extractor on
