That has cleared up a mystery of my dud Hornby class 37 which runs dread fully, even with new traction tyres. Good job I didn't get round to replacing the bogie frames with ViTrains frames yet. I'll save them til I can get hold of a new motor bogie. Cheers for that!
Hi John.......gradually catching up on all of your videos.......you make replacing the bogie soooo easy......hahaha.......think I need to buy a very old loco and do some practicing...... Thanks for replying to my comments.....they are really appreciated......:))
Nicely detailed "how to", John. One comment; the idler gears have no effect on the gearing, and so the only two ratios that matter are the worm to its cog, and the brass cog to the drive wheels. Quite a different matter on the ring field motors, where the first gear after the cog effectively has two gears on the same shaft, so adds another gear set to the calculation. But the reduction of the worm drive gives enough reduction, and the two-stage reduction does the job for a similar motor speed. Regards, Tom
Hi Victor...sorry for the delay. OK, you can clean the commutator by hand with some VERY FINE emery cloth...you must keep it all even so as to not end up with any flat segments! The other thing you can use is a thing called a 'com stick'....I've never seen or used one of these but other youtubers have told me about them. Maybe a Google search? Kind regards, John.
Hi John, interesting vid, I haven't come accross this type of motor bogie before, it just looks so... Heath Robinson :) when some others are so simple and straightforward.
Hi buddy, thanks for your comment & glad the video was of help to you. I have been meaning to do a video on soldering but just haven't got around to doing so. I'll try & do one ASAP. Cheers, John.
Great video there John!! Its amazing Horby employed 2,000 people up until the late 1990s at Margate when production was still going on in the UK. Nice Class 58 there not only one can purchase the model of one they are some real ones for sale too. LOL
Thanks buddy, I always reply to everybody....eventually! I think it may look easy because I have been into electronics [& mechanical] stuff all my life. Many things are not that hard....it's sometimes a confidence [& or knowledge] thing. This is why I hope my 'how to' videos help other people to do these things & gives them the confidence in doing so.....when a lot of the time they're not really so difficult! Cheers, John.
I managed to get one of those triang oil dispensers - it came in an old train set that I got for only £10! I knocked the damn thing over though - so Im ordering more oil!
in response to my ? yes they do fit and you can put 2 in with a bit of rewireing and DCC them thanxs chambs for the ebay advice didnt even know there was replacements. 8 wheel drive 58001 now rocks :)
You are welcome John. I need to clarify something,I do not own a Dremel and I am not in a position to afford one right now,so can you pls tell me any alternate method to clean the commutator like you did with the Dremel,to get it clean as much as possible .Cheers Victor
Hi buddy, OK, I don't seem to have a problem with my Hornby class 58 with pulling...she also has rubber tyres. This being the case I've never fitted twin power bogies to one of them however...I think it would be pretty easy to do if you get another power bogie from a doner loco & yes...you would wire them together exactly the same as they are wired. Hope this helps you? Kind regards, John.
Hi buddy. As best as I can remember I don't think I even touched on the DCC thing in this video however...converting the Hornby class 58 to DCC is real easy! I hope this helps you? Best regards, John.
Hey John, I just came across your video ,thanks a lot for sharing this,I find this really helpful and encouraging to improve on this great hobby.Have you done anything on soldering because I just cant get it right .Keep up the good work mate cheers!
Do you know if the motor will fit in an earlier type 58 bogie it looks like it will. Just my old 58001 has been run to within an inch of its life LOL :) .
I would suggest replacing the complete motor bogie as spares are virtually non existent these days. If you have a 58 with the old motor bogie you may have to cut a piece of plastic out to fit the new power bogie. For a class 58 you would be better off with 2 motor bogies as I always found them underpowered!
Hi john its curtis can you tell me what I have to type in on eBay to find all that so I can buy one myself coz my class 58 has stopped working and I need to replace the motor in mine just like you just have done and wear did you get the oil from coz i need some of that to oil mine too
Curtis Connolly Hi again Curtis....here you go: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hornby-X8202-Motor-Worm-for-0-6-0-BoB-Fowler-Tank-B1-Class-58-More-/310835539068?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item485f3dec7c All the best, John.
Gees budy I'm not an expert as to what will fit what....sorry. I've only been back into the model trains for about 13 months! However, as an electronics engineer [my website is: Champ Electronics, Nottingham, UK.] servicing a DC motor is no big deal for me! Nevertheless if it looks the same all should be OK. Please let me know if all goes OK? Kind regards, John.
