What most likely would have taken me a week to do with much trial and error I was able to do in 15 hours. I took my time and stayed composed. I want to thank you so much for your detailed explanation and great closeups in your video. The job was rather difficult but your video made it easier. Your attention to detail makes your instruction above the rest. THANK YOU!!

Peter thank you so much for your videos. My 97 is still on the road thanks to your series of videos with 295K miles. I've replaced the timing belt, power steering hoses, cleaned the plenum or air tank and replaced both the transmission and trans-axle fluid thanks to you! God bless you.

Thanks so so much for taking the time to put this video together. Especially for all the effort in framing the shots properly without wobbly/blurry/unclear sections, not to mention the incredibly straightforward layman-style explanations of the process. I've a little mechanical DIY experience, and I'll be doing my first cambelt myself because of your excellent video. :)

@@kn520 Hi there. Was a long long time back but happily got into the hobby and have done a few now! Depends greatly on the car but lining up the timing marks obviously essential. If you have a water pump on whatever car you're doing, I use old school hylomar on the gaskets and a teeny coating of red rubber grease on the o-ring types, but not convinced the red rubber grease is super amazing. Some say just use coolant to lubricate those. Progressively tighten bolts in a star pattern also. Also get a manual and watch as many RU-vid videos as you can for your car. If it's a single cam engine it'll be daunting but easy and logical when you're in there. Good luck!

I just finished the job. Thank you! What I did different: made a shorter harmonic balancer tool to remove the bolt and re install it; used a harmonic balancer puller; did not take off the plugs which allowed the timing to stay put; did not remove the motor mount, but the 3 screws on the motor mount towards the belt side (2 under and 1 on top) and pried it apart with a jack handle to slip the new belt in; raised the engine about an inch to closed the motor mount area that was pried open; cleaned the area prior to installing belt which was oily( belt was cracked all over); used the jack handle to push the new belt bearing to the side and which allowed the belt to easily go on; only removed the alternator and air conditioning belts; cleaned the valve cover gasket and added sealant or gasket maker to keep oil in and away from the belt; aligned the markings per your and other videos; rotated the engine as you did and which is an area that the lobes are not located. A very long and tiring job! Thank you again.

had to lock the belt tensioner bearing to keep the belt from jumping and while rotating cam. used a cylinder compression gauge to determine TDC exhaust and not intake cycle. do the markings! determining belt deflection- used a ruler. the tip on determining TDC was priceless-screwdriver(or object) in cyl 1,timing mark -0 and crank shaft marking, camshaft marking and crankshaft woodruff key pointing up. do the markings! there's a pdf manual on this model for free and on google. leaving vehicle jacked on one side for extended time may damaged cv joint on opposite wheel. Thank you Mr. Finn for your time in making this video.

I want to reach out and give you a BIG THANK YOU @peter Finn. Ive had problems when i tried to replace my timing belt. When we tried to undo the bolt below we broke the cam shaft on the top. We did it the wrong way. And after that ive used your video as a reference to rebuild my cars engine with a new shaft. Its been standing for about 2 year. Today ( 23 / 7 -19 ) Ive turned the egnition for the first time and it all started smooth allmost. But in its in the right direction. Thanks to much reading and buying a book for the car it self and YOUR video helped me all the way. Again thank you ! And srry for my bad english. its been a while. Thanks you so much from Sweden.

Very helpful. The crank pulley (behind the harmonic balancer) was the most difficult job. I had to tap two bolts and pull using the a puller I got for free from Autozone (definitely do this with the old belt attached with tension). For some reason the water pump was annoying too but very rewarding diy job.

Hi Peter. Many thanks for your video, it was a great help in encouraging to 'have a go'. The most difficult part was freeing the pulley at the bottom which was stuck and needed some encouragement with a heat gun. Had fun during the job putting on my best Finnish accent while working through the job - opening and closing bolts with the 'one two' socket. wow, thanks peter. i had changed timing belts in several cars before. but i stumbled on my 92 corolla and ended up having the shop do it for $500+. this video just pops up in my feed. so i was curious to see what i missed before. at 23.46, never saw that little nut from below on the engine mount. that explained why i tried to lift the engine up for more room to work on, the whole body frame lifted up with the engine too. not suppose to be that way. i was worried that i might break something else. now i know why. i have another 20,000 miles for my next time belt change. now i know what to do next time.

Thanks for this video. I’ll be able to replace the timing belt of my friend’s car. If you don’t have the proper tool to loosening the crankshaft. You can use a long bar with a size socket and turn the switch like trying to crank, and then that will make the job more easy. It has to be before you disconnect the battery. So, continue the rest of the job. Just a trick

Actual timing belt replacement time for this car is less than an hour....it doesnt take two hours to change it...BUT you have to have the RIGHT tools ( a claw hammer is for framing houses, not for automotive work) , the KNOWLEDGE( see claw hammer), without the unnecessary removal of half the things this guy removes....you will never see a good technician use gloves to work on a car...they arent scared of getting dirty hands...

very simple if timrnig belt is not broken just make 3 marks with white pain or nail polish on top and botton pinion with belt. then transfer the old belt marks to the new belt. if it has broken or jump a tooth you need to carefully falow this toyota master mechanic.

Peter, Two questions (Note: All work with engine still in the car): One: I need to change the water pump on my 1995 Corolla 1.6L. Is it possible to get the water pump off without removing the timing belt or the timing belt tensioner? It looks very tight. It looks like one bolt from the water pump sits near the belt and tensioner. Two: I cannot get the center engine cover off. I do not want to remove the engine drive shaft pulley (Harmonic Balancer) to give access to the bottom engine cover if I do not have to. I have seen from your video that if I remove the bottom engine cover, then I can remove the center cover. Instead, if I remove all four bolts that hold the Pulley onto the Water Pump Driveshaft, can I get enough room to pull off the center engine cover? Thanks :)
@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor
@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor 7 лет назад
Hi, Here are answers: One: Timing belt must remove Two:Center cover opens, when you tried to open it from all directions
@uvideohelicopter
@uvideohelicopter 7 лет назад
OK. Since timing belt must be removed, might as well change timing belt and tensioner with new ones at the same time as changing the water pump. Thank you :)

Hi, the sprocket is bad to open. So use plastic hammer and hits sprocket carefully all areas. It takes time, but it opens.

Greetings, Thank you for the video demonstration. I have a corolla 1998 and I suppose it has internal timing chain and not external timing belt. The title of your video is "How to replace timing belt Toyota Corolla. Years 1992 to 2002." This makes me wonder. From 1998 on all corollas are supposed to have timing chain. Am I correct?

Do to your good willing to show timing belt replacement of toyota corolla I could do the same in my Toyota. I notice through your videos that you know very well Toyota Corolla. I have the following problem: The buzzer of the warning lights on does not work. Probably it is a problem related to a relay.I know there are several relays near the clutch but I do not know which is the right one. Can you help me with that ? It is a corolla year 1998 liftback.1.4. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

1:17:37 notice the "TOYODA" engine block stamp in the belt area to the lower right of the tensioner. Nice little easter egg reference to the family behind toyota. Makes it funnier that the stamp outside the belt cover area on the left is the proper "Toyota" stamp.

Awesome vid, but it appears you have no A/C. For those that do, the a/c compressor bracket that holds the tensioner idler is in the way of getting to a single bolt for the middle timing belt cover. Any trick to getting that, do I have to pull The ac compressor? Thanks

crankshaft timing and camshaft timing is not alligned. remove timing belt cover and put on old timing belt(used) to rotate camshaft clockwise to see whether both camshaft and crankshaft timing tdc and assemble again. it will take 10+ seconds to start. dont forget to push gas pedal
@oo-ef2eq
@oo-ef2eq 7 лет назад
when crankshaft and camshaft dis alligned. they dont rotate properly. thats why engine wont start. 54:42 check camshaft pulley position carefully and see yours is same ( little hole goes 12:00 position) 55:48 crankshaft metal pin (woodruff key) position should be pointing 12:00 position. 1:02:15 when you rotate camshaft with 26mm, put something long in 1st piston to check like peter once everything done 57:45 put timing pulley and leverage pulley with long pipe to give tension on timing belt. read this comment and watch video many times until you have clear idea what you are doing.
