Great work there, I'm a little jealous of your work bench setup. I need to get myself a nice air station. Thanks for taking the time to make these video's. They are excellent. :)
Awesome Video Jessa! I love how you take the time to take apart the phone while explaining every step in detail and why certain things are done. This is perhaps the most crucial to learning. Understanding each step and having a reason for each move such as proper heat, adjust heat and air flow, then removing with flux and using braid and so on. Beautiful setup and video! Keep it up!
Some of these issues are dead battery symptoms as well. Slow charge, quick drain, phone reboots while battery is connected, and also no change in percentage while charging. Great video none the less!
+Jessa Jones yes maybe you misinterpret my purposes of highlighting battery issues as the video's target is based on the u2 charging ic chip. I own and operate a repair shop. And from this level of experience 1 out of 50 iphone 5s's that come in with charge issues are the u2 ic chip at best. Most repair shops always overlook the common issues. I have been in this very new industry for 5 years and have worked with countless repair shops in countless areas. My statement was actually positive feedback and actually adding some specific information to an already great video. One of the reasons i chose Information Technology is because it is always advancing and we are always learning. Each one teach one attitude. But thanx for ur re re iteration of what kindly pointed out in the first place.
Will knocking off caps/etc near battery terminal mess up U2? For example: A cap gets unknowing knocked off and battery is connected, or plugged in and thus U2 could be damaged? Because after replacing caps with new ones from DigiKey and continue to show symptoms is a recurring question I've always had. Thank you
IPhone 6 help needed. Slow charge. Fast drain. Uncertified charger and usb lightning cables have been used. Is the Tristar likely damaged and causing this slow charge fast drain?!
Hi Jessa, great Video! Unfortunately, I have neither the equipment nor the skill for serious board-level repairs, but I have a more general question: If I use a genuine Apple charger, but with a cheap replacement USB cord (instead of the original one, which broke a while ago), can that also cause damage to the U2 ic? [FYI: My phone is currently dead (black screen, no boot, no response to hard reset) and, upon connecting it to my laptop, it gets stuck in a loop: connect-to-itunes >> attempt update/recovery >> error 4005/4014/4015 (varies).]
Hi, I have a question. My iphone (7) is randomly shutting down, only powers on when connected to charger. Sometimes it is working normally during one or two days. What do you think if the tristar ic chip could be a reason? Thank you in advance
Hi, There are so many hot air work station (Japanese, American, European and Chinese) out there that it can be a pain to choose the right one for you sometimes. So my question is what defines a good hot air station? Will it be possible to get this job done properly with a cheaper Chinese Hot Air Station? Thank you in advance!
hi Jessa, i removed the u2 chip from my iphone 6 but i think i damaged these pads where the chip was sitting on while taking off the chip with my tweezer.. how do i reball them back to normal (which is not easy without a microscope). should i do it like just the way you did in this vid? or do u have any other tips or suggestions to reball these pads on my board? thanks in advance and best wishes to you.
hello rehap. ı really like your videos, you are a real professional. ı want to ask you something, while you are changing the iphone 5s u2 integrated, how much degree you heat up. and which level the air blower at? i would be really appriciate if you reply
Hey jessa great video. This looks fairly similar to replacing the LP8550 on a macbook pro just with a sightly bigger chip and a much smaller board. Is this the case?? Also is that the Dell P2715Q 4K monitor in the background??
You are awesome. You've Inspired me to open a mall kiosk and do screen repairs. Maybe in a few years I'll change chips like you. Thanks for sharing your know how.
Hey there... You mention a "common no-boot problem" being the power management chip. My iPhone 5 wont turn on, I tried replacing with a known good battery, same thing. Would you recommend trying to replace the 338S1131 or is there any way to confirm the problem? Help greatly appreciated!
Thanks for your reply! I just opened it, looked around, didn't find any shorts but without doing anything it fully booted once. So i thought its good. Put it back together, it boots till the Apple logo, then shuts off. Could that be U2 as well? Same with a known good battery...
I have an iPad 4 a1458, Wall socket mains charger exploded while it was connected to my iPad, I have replaced charging cable and wall socket but still no joy, my iPad won't turn on, no power. Is changing (pmic) Power IC on motherboard will fix the problem? and is that something you can do for us. If so please let me know how to book in for repairs and how much to get it done. Kind regards, Nas.
I got the same symptoms as described in the video on my iPad mini 4 , it starts up with a brand new battery but won't charge, it says it's charging but the battery percentage won't move (fake charging). Has the iPad mini 4 got a u2 chip??? If not what could be causing this fault??? It loads up and restores fine on iTunes but won't charge...please any help.jay
I have an Air 2 that will not power on. If plugged into charger, starts to boot loop. When I try to restore it, I get error 4005. Battery is good. No water damage. I've ruled out all parts attached to the board except for the charge port. Could it be the charge port, U2, or PMIC?
hi Jessa, this is the exact information i was looking for, i have made a comment on one of the videos of louis mentioning my problem, now that i know what is the culprit, i can recheck my phone's "illogical" board when i receive back from the repair shop. only one question i have, i mostly charge my phone with a car charger, whose output is rated at 2amps, its an expensive one i bought it for maybe 200 AED. at home i use the original charger, should i change my car charger too ? as you said this problem occurs mostly by using knockoff chargers/ non original chargers. please reply at your convenience,
hi,ihave got a galaxy s6 edge which has fast charging issue i have tryed all common solutions but it doesnt work like changing cables,or the whole charger even mobile socket,do u think it's ic power also??
Good Morning Jessa, I have replaced my U2 IC on my iphone 5s and now my phone will display a battery and a charge cable on the screen. But when I plug in a cable it won't recognize the cable and will not charge. Can you give me some hints please? did I cook something? PS I love your videos! Perhaps I heated something up and caused a component to move. Where should I look?
Hello can you help me please, i have an 5C and 6, the problem was not charging, i did replace a new U2 / U1700 ic, now the phone shows its charge but not increase percentage. Im not a starter, i made this skill many times, but now i dont know what to do...On logic board not damaged, already check. Battery and dock connector changed, same problem. Many thanks!
Great videos Jessa. I'm curious -- I have an iPhone 5 ; it will not detect iTunes , or charge... I replaced the battery and it started up. Still wouldn't charge. So, removed the battery and attempted to power up with just the charger -- no dice. Could this be the u2 IC ? ... Why don't most techs offer iPhone 5 u2 IC services?
Thank you so much for your reply. I found a service (on ebay) for $30, plus shipping and they will replace the u2 IC on my iPhone 5 (only seller that would do so) ...just out of curiosity why is it more of a PITA to do one on a 5, in comparison to say a 5c, or 5s ?
U2 is next to the CPU on the iPhone 5, so there is a good chance of killing the CPU. So then you have to explain to the customer that while they started with no charging, they have a dead CPU. Too much risk for $30!
Ohhhh, I see that makes perfect sense. It is pretty close to the processor, so heat damage becomes a concern when you remove and reinstall that u2 IC. Well, I fixed mine yesterday fairly quickly -- to all those thinking it may be their u2 IC ; you should try replacing your charging port first because the part is cheap and it's fairly easy to do. That's what ended up fixing the problem for me ; and I was still getting voltage at some of the test points. No charging / no USB sync. Now all is well in iPhone land.
Just watched this and repaired my first u2 tristar. Excellent video! Quick question, you said if you did the repair now you wouldn't bother with braid, do you just sit the new one on top and let the hot air melt old solder back in place? Seriously thanks again, this vid helped a lot!
+Stephen Elliott bead individual pads until they all have even amount of solder. Wicking means risk of ruining the pads. These pads are stuck on with scotch tape
Hi Jessa, in regards to your mosfet in that case he could not be the responsible one? If not with respect to him not to switch what would happen? thanks for your attention!
Initial 5S board slow charge fast drain from cheap China Charger cable eliminated battery and flex cable as issues- Replaced U2 chip, repair went well -or seemed to.... good heat, shielding etc Board fails to power up now-even with charged battery installed Just wanted to see if you had seen this happen before and possible pointer where to start looking Also just repaired an old 4S w dim screen-know what it was...THE COILl!....haha :) Thanks for what you do, hooked on your videos
HI my post was deleted for some reason....weird..I did not know what I said was controversial..I asked.: 1. Have an ipad 4 with the cannot get past unknown 4013 recovery error 2. great condition no damage to the body at all 3. Does not charge when using different chargers and usb chords... My question is where can I send this ipad 4 to get the U2 IC chip replaced? thanks! Arthur F.
Hi, I have currently just started a new mobile phone repair business and most of my work is more plug and play rather than board level. I have done some surface mount work in the past and used an airflow rework station to remove QFN's, SOTP's but never have I done BGA's. the techniques looks similar to those I have used in the past but because I am looking to repair customers phones it feels risky (of course I woukd practice first) however my question is, woukd an infrared set up be safer and easier to use for U2 and WIFI chips? or is a hot air station still considered the best way? any help would be greatly appreciated.
i have a iphone 6 plus but it doesnt do any thing complete dead and the previous owner said she left it plugged in over night charging with a cheap after market charger and in the morning it wouldn't turn on or do anything i have also tried plugging it in my computer to see if it reads it but nothing at all what do you think might be the problem? i also tried a good known battery and it still didnt do any thing need help please and thanks
Hello, please I need help. my honor 4x screen touch is not working. I replaced the screen still not working. Please what do I do to make it work? Thanks.
my iphone 6 reboots after 3 mins constantly whether is plugged in or not. It does charge, connect to itunes, restores and updates, when reboots it says 1 percent then when you hit the home button its says the right battery percentage does this sound like a symptom of a bad u2 ic?
Question Jessa, I have a Belkin USB cable that will charge damaged U2 IC's. I've used other Belkin cords, Apple cords etc. Nothing will charge a bad U2. But why is it that this one and only this one will charge bad U2's ??? It is puzzling ! Please share some insight : )
Word! But it's only 1 cable out of 10 I had that would do that. I bought some more & just waiting for another bad U2 to test. It'd be cheaper to sell them a cable than change the chip.
Hi I live in germany my phone has a problem it restarts after charging but the problem is combined with graphic problems apple does not touch it used phone and the repair shop was useless did not solve the problem. The sreen seems to get wrong signals cause even the lines of the apple logi whgile booting is somehow stretcht to some lines then the whone works pritty well for some time but after using the camera or after loading problems come back. pleas give me a hinge what to do?
Hello Jessa! Can you help me, i have one iphone 5s and i already change twice the chip u2 ic, change battery, but still discharge the battery very quick(12% standby in one hour), no missing components near conector batery, do you have any ideia? Thanks
Hi Jessa, Loving your work!! Massive well done on helping out the masses :) Quick question, I had an issue with a 5c With fake charging, have have replaced the charge port, Battery and the U2 chip (thanks to the vid) but it's still fake charging. Could there be another issue at fault like a capacitor or something? Thanks again Mario (Blackpool England)
Hi Jessa, I hope you can help me. I have a IPhone 5s and I have been having problems with the battery for a few months. Problems first started when it would only charge to 57% and then stop even thou the charging lighting symbol was still showing. Then it would drain very quickly even thou its plugged in. Now it wont charge at all, all I get is a black screen with the battery icon showing red and it wont charge. Any ideas?? Great videos by the way, keep up the good work. If I got the U2 chip changed, how long do they usually last?
I notice swelling batteries cause the U2 to fail also (sometimes)? Or the non-Apple chargers and U2 causeing the battery to swell? I notice they swell two different ways. Usually like a balloon and U2 will be good. But if hard like a rock and bumpy usually bad U2. Or am trippin'
hi jessa i got iphone 5s and i service like wasted about 140$ changing my charge ic on iphone 5s and my phone charge well until 1week my phone still charge very slow idk how to do now i used all my friend charge and it still cant charge like 1hours/percent
I have a smartphone IPHONE 5C display the charging on screen but it doesn't charging what the component who responsible about this problem i have to change it .and i put a new battery and nothing happened. THANK YOU.
HI Jessa, Really enjoying your vids. I'm trying to repair my daughters 5s, it's stuck on Apple logo screen. Tried everything to restore but nothing works so took it apart first thing I'm checking is the battery voltage which come out at 4.26 v would over voltage cause a no boot problem? Cheers
Hey. I have a iPhone 3G or 3GS and I have some info I need to take off Of it, and I can't seem to turn it on. Do you know of any tricks or tips that might help me in my situation. It's been a good few years since I powered the phone on, It did work last week, and when I tried to charge it. It didn't even want to show the charging symbol
i have iphone 5 the problem with it is that it charges slowly, and btry drains vary quickly. also if mobile get switched off for long time and is let like that for long time then even after connecting to charger it doesn't charge. so is it the charging IC problem?
Somewhere between 300-450c depending on the job. This always differs. iPad Rehab highly recommends the Quick 861DW bit.ly/2xGDTXo for a cheap, affordable, powerful hot air station with an easy interface. It will remove all different types of chips without a problem, unlike weaker stations that can't stay hot enough long enough to do the job.
Hi Jessa! First I'd like to thank you for your informative video. I do have a question about my iPhone 5 that I'm having a problem with. I recently plugged it in to charge on some USB wall outlets that I have just installed. After a few hours, it only shoed 3%, when it started at 7-10%. I moved it to the official Apple charger and went to bed and noticed it kept turning itself on and off/rebooting. I figured it just check it out in the morning. Unfortunately, it was stuck in this reboot mode for a long time. it finally ended up displaying the "connect to iTunes" message. It's now stuck on that whenever it's plugged in. However, it's not getting recognized by my PC. I'm not able to access my data or turn it back on. Windows is saying the USB device has a hardware issue. Could the U2 chip be causing it not to be recognized/connect to anything? I really need the data off of there as I have tons of pictures/video of my family. Any help is much appreciated.
I've tried a new battery. Unfortunately, it turns on but still won't get past the "connect to iTunes" screen. Nothing recognizes the phone when plugged in. I've already ordered a new U2 chip. That thing is impossibly small! I can't tell is if it's already "balled" or not. Mostly, I just want to get the pictures/vids. I really don't care if it's 100% operational or not, so I may just attempt to reflow the new one on. Bad idea?
Hi, thanks for interesting video. I've got an iPhone 5s with no boot problem (no usb detection as well). Once connected to good battery and pressing power button the phone generates some voltages (1v, 3v, ~200mA) however the display does not come on. The display and charging port have been tested with other phone. Is it the power management chip which is partially damaged, any ideas? Thanks
+iPad Rehab Thanks for replay. it is not detected by iTunes (the Lightning connector and display has been successfully tested with other phone). The voltage on the lcd backlight is not rising and stays at battery level. The phone is not charging the battery as well so I have to charge it in other phone or supply iPhone from power supply.
This could be many things, with 200mA it sounds like you have a separate display problem and usb detection problem. I assume you are prompting it to boot by shorting the power connector or using a power flex. I wouldn't think a phone could consume 200mA and be a dead phone.
+iPad Rehab I am starting it up by pressing power button. If the display does not come on and the usb is not detected it might lead to broken power management chip. I will try to measure some more voltages. I assume that if the USB interface chip is faulty it will not prevent device to boot?
very nice fix you really make evrything look so simple (: how did you get the ic without cleaning the black apoxy and what nuzzel did you use i nver see this kind of thecnic for uw replacement very good work .
iPad Rehab what nouzzl size did you use I see that you put the heat under the ic really good methood u never see this kind of work it take out so fast ! Realy nice
hi rehabe i need you great help my iphone 6 WORK BUT THE SCREEN NOt work i get new screen but too wont work and WHEN I PuT IT IN CHARGE HE MaKE SONG OF CHARGE EVER 3s .SO MY IPHONE WORK BUT NOTING IN THE SCREEN . Hi, i need some help! i changed the screen on my iphone and now it doesnt turn on, no charging, just no response. i did check all the ribbons and nothing still... i think its a short? Can it be this problem? i also did take out my mother board and moved it to another iphone 6 i had and no response. i may also think it could be when i was switching out the ribbons for lcd while it was still on. Please really need help thank you!!
When its plugged in for a while , does it show up on itunes or can you make vibrator motor sensor virbate by muting and muting ? it might be a display (ic) issue. cheers
I have an Iphone 5S, it had problems with charging for a few days (the charge was displayed at 1%, but it was definitely charging , the charger was getting warm), worked like that for a few days but then turned off, now it is asking for charge and recognizes when it is connected to a charger but it does not charge, it stayed like that for a quite few days and still displays empty battery, so I think the battery had some charge in it when it turned off. Is it a U2 problem or a U7 problem and how can I tell? I have access to a soldering station with a fan, so I want to try to fix it myself since repair services are asking 50 to 70 bucks for that. Thank you.
Thanks for fast reply, I've changed the battery a few months ago since the old one was holding charge for only 6 to 8 hours. Will try to put it back in and order Tristar if it doesn't help, thanks.
So I've measured the current draw and it looks like it is charging (the phone took around 350 mah @ 0.67 amps before current draw gradually dropped to 0) but it won't turn on, just shows an empty battery on screen when power button is pushed, so I'm still not sure whether it is U2 or U7 to blame
Hi, I just wonder how much do you charge for this kind of repair as I live in London UK and guys in my local repair shop are trying to charge me £70 which is roughly $100? I think it's too much :D ..is there any other way to replace it? for example to use the iron? many thanks
+Jessy Jay yes, so just follow the video and do it yourself, it shows you exactly how to do this repair. If you would prefer to take advantage of the thousands of dollars of specialized equipment and thousands of hours of experience and outsource it to us, then that costs $99 USD, which is less than replacing the device.
Jessa Jones lol :D Thanks for the video I will do it myself.. btw the hot air station costs less than $40 hahah so yeah expensive equipment :p good one
+Jessy Jay just to be clear --you will no longer have a phone at all if you attempt to replace the U2 chip with a $40 hot air station and no experience. With that said, best of luck. Hope you prove me wrong.
Got a 5C at work that seems to show a weird like colour on any screen we plug into it, after a few mins though the display fades to darkness, also we dont have any touch at all, but the phone charges and boots fine, what could it be?
Hi, I watched several videos regarding Tristar problems. My symptoms are different. I have only apple logo on Iphone 6s after power on. When I connect power cable and measure voltage on battery rails it show me 3,65 V which looks like no problems with Tristar. What do you think about it ? Do you have any suggestions ?
can u please answer this question.. my iPhone 5s is charging normally, i have replaced the battery, im sure its not software issue cause i tried everything and i get my battery drained within 13 hours of standby. so i suppose this issue is u2 related
my iphone 5s when the battery get full it turn off and dont work at all! when i unplug the battery and plug again it turn on :\? what is the problem ?! :(
We use NC-559-V2-TF flux which can be purchased here: mailin.repair/amtech-nc-559-v2-30-cc-16160.html It is the best stuff there is. You can also get it with a plunger & needle tip for a small fee.

Hello, ive got great problem! I've got two times mini 4! One charges only when off ,another have problems with the touchscreen-sometimes doesn't work! Suspicious u2 and u 15 but not sure! Can someone advise me! Thank you!
Hi Jessa, Recently i had replaced LCD for my iphone 5 & now when i connect charger it says "This accessory may not be supported". when the battery drains completely & the phone is switched off i then connect the charger & on pressing the power button once the phone starts after a while and charges upto 5% and then the charging stops and when i re-connect it says "This accessory is not supported". i have tried with all the types of cable & power adapters including the apple genuine but the same problem persists.
thanks jessa, but is it possible that components near the charging connector may get damaged?. also i noticed that its just charging problem because my phone is detected by iTunes.
Hi! i had a problem with my iphone 5, if i connect it to the pc it syncs with itunes and i can do restore upgrade anything but it does not charge, i need to turn it off so the iphone can charge, you know what would be the problem?
I've an SE and I changed a U2/Tristar chip on it because the phone didn't charge up. After chip replacement the motherboard has PP_GPU and PP_CPU short. I used kapton tape to cover other parts and I used the hot air station on 350C. I think I did a good job but just in case I removed the IC (all pads look good) but the motherboard still has short circuit. The phone never had water damage. Can anyone tell me why has the phone short circuit and how can I fix it please? Thanks in advance. Anita
Hi my wife dropped her iPhone 5s ,now it's dead and when trying to charge nothing happens and it gets hot where all the connectors are located at the top of the main board, could you please give me an idea what it could be,could it be the battery or power chip? Thanks
oh I didn't think of a short , I am a beginner with cell phones , could you please tell me some well known ideas where a short could be would it be on one of the chips or another place , thanks so much
Jessa I am down in Arizona and I have her mainboard out of the iPhone 5s and the heat shields off from the front and the back , I see a black wire connecting to a gold connector the wire is broke , remember I said it went dead when she dropped it and wont start again and it get hot when you try to charge it near where the battery and everything is connected, could I send the main board to you because I don't know if I broke that wire by accident taking off the heat shield or there is a short
the black wire on the side of the main bord with the 2 gold ends one end is broke the wire if thatwas broken and I didn't break it would tht cause the short where the phone wont come on and it would get hot tryin to charge it, thanks so much

hello, I have a 5s, the port was damaged and my colleague changed it with a new one but the iphone now seems to be on boot loop. what could it be? I can't try the original port because he disposed of it before giving it to me, I have tried with another new one but the problem is the same. what could have he done?
yes. can't post there anymore as the forum became with a fee just after my last post. i saw your reply (thank you for it) and well, you seemed angry with me for fucking it up, i would be as well, but it wasn't my fault, i didn't have a chance to see the phone until it was already fucked. all i did was charging the battery outside. i Only do the electronics (laptops and macbooks, on phones i only do jtag boot repair, and emmc chip off data recovery, i am starting on iphones) they did all the shit, i have just been tasked with try to recover the device, it is not my fault if the, sorry to say, idiots didn't back it up before doing the job. I assume they thought that it was a simple port swap and nothing to get paranoid on. Again i didn't have the time to check the device for much, on monday i will know if it is a long screw damage or something else. I have already talked with the boss who is gonna deal with my collegues and the customer (apparently and luckily he Icloud-backupped two days earlier). I still want to try to fix the device anyway for respect toward the customer and also as "training" for myself. If you would be so kind to point me toward the right direction and tell me what to look for i would be immensely gratefull. Thank you again ma'am... sorry for stirring you up earlier
Then change tristar, fix any pry damage by dock and dfu restore. It probably never needed a charge port. It is boot looping because of software corruption from botched repair
iPad Rehab they said they wanted to change the port because it was charging only when the chord was placed in deeply, so I guess they ruled out hardware problems. they also said it was working completely fine before changing the port assembly. I will try to enter in DFU mode but I think they have already tried that. I am gonna remove the port assembly and try to boot it that way and see how it behaves
