In this video I replace the driver and passenger side valve cover gaskets due to leaks and the vehicle being very dated approaching almost 200,000 miles. This video shows the process I take when replacing the valve cover gaskets and will help show the steps for 5.2L & 5.9L V8 Engines. Thanks for watching and I hope you find this video useful!

You do not need to use any gasket sealer on Felpro silicone gaskets.
@lc02

It's just easier to do it that way to keep it lined up and to keep it from falling off

@@lc02 Just did the job and the gaskets are easy to line up with the bolt holes. NO extra sealant with silicone gaskets.

@@mchristr yeah I did mine a few weeks back and it was extremely easy, way better than most cars where it's a pain to line it up

Thanks man job was a little tougher than I thought because of the back 2 screws are difficult to reach and some screws have weird brackets. With your guide the job is now done!

I will repeat what several have said already because it is too important not to heed. Do NOT use RTV or any gasket maker on those Fel-Pro gaskets. Not only is it unneeded but it actually makes the seal worse. It makes the gasket wavy and the RTV gets crusty and flakes away. Also, the RTV reacts with the rubber compound on the gasket and deteriorates it. So again, do NOT use RTV or gasket maker with those Fel-Pro gaskets. Repair using the Fel-Pro gasket alone. That's how they were designed.

I have to take that same valve cover off of my 2000 Ram 1500, 5.2 liter to be able to replace my original PCV valve. The original valve is 1 piece and it's hard plastic. The grommit & valve is 1 piece. There is no way to be able to pull that valve out of the valve cover without having to take the cover off. So hopefully, taking the valve cover off, will be a lot easier. Thank you for the vid, Swan!

This video was great, just purchased a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 with 178K miles on it and seen the same oil leak. I’ll be fixing that tomorrow with the video as a reference 👍🏽

That’s great to hear. These trucks have amazing engines and are more than worth it to fix back up given how inexpensive you can find them these days. Hope these videos help with yours! Just redid the whole front suspension this past week, so I will be uploading a video of that very soon 👍🏼

Never put the rtv high temp silicone all the way around. It just makes trouble for next time a little dab in all corners and a few dabs in the middle. The seal come from tightening the bolts down.

exhaust manifold gasket. First line of defense to continue all hot exhaust gases through the pipes and not the engine bay.

Hey Swan, I have the same engine in my 2000 Ram. Could you tell me what the torque specs are for those valve covers? I have to replace my PCV valve and I have to take that valve cover off to be able to get the original one out. That PCV valve is one piece and it's hard plastic... And it won't just pull out. Thanks. I'd appreciate it.
@SwanCanFixIt
@SwanCanFixIt 2 года назад
I believe the correct torque spec is 105 inch-pounds or around 9 foot-pounds for those valve cover bolts

I have a 5.9L magnum and had similar problems trying to remove and replace the PVC. I ended up getting it out but was very cautious didn’t want to break any and get into head. I ended removing it and replacing the grommet. So just fyi, it can be done if you patient and gentle

High heat gasket maker is for exhaust applications. You definitely shouldn't be using high heat gasket for your valve cover.

The point of a gasket is to seal. Using permatex is redundant.
@bruced9668
@bruced9668 3 года назад
He used it as a glue for his gasket so when you turn it over and try to snug it in the engine bay the gasket doesnt move slightly which would just cause another leak which would be redundant.

@@adriananoelle4699That's good, you wont necessarily be prone to oil leaks but theres a chance it can slightly twist, especially with inexperience people putting it on. Mechanics use little dabs of sealant glue. So vehicles have grooves to set the gasket in which makes it a bit easier but I'd still dab some glue.
