Very informative and very accurate video. I recently changed the impeller on my 115 Optimax, which is the same platform as the 90 in this video. The only difference is that my 115 Optimax was lung shaft, therefore, the gear shift selector rod was longer. Only thing I did different is that as my impeller kit came with a new plate and gaskets, I also replaced the plate and gaskets. The kit from Mercury also came with a tool in order to ensure the top rubber seal is not pushed down too tight on the water pump housing.
Another fine video. Thank you. You are saving money for lots of folks by sharing your knowledge. Another topic that would be good is changing lower unit oil. I hear it is relatively simple but I'd like to see it done once before I try it. Thanks again for a great how-too video.
I would like to thank you for taking your time to make this video, my water pump went out today, and after watching your video I'm going to replace my pump myself, again thank you.
The higher you tilt the motor, the easier it goes. Use the tilt lock by the transom. Note direction of flex on the old impeller, grease and insert new in same direction. Thank you Sir, quality video.
THX! Dealer wanted $135 plus part and for me to leave my boat for a week. Took me about 1hr and saved $$$$. Will be doing it myself your video really helped!!! (2005 90 hp 2 stroke)
Great help. Got me thru. I have a mercury kit with a bunch of washers. The parts diagram showed one just above and one under the impeller. No idea where the others go. Couldn't find anyone using them on RU-vid. Thanks.
It takes a man from DIXIE to explain changing this water pump is SO EASY!!!!!!! Thank you, and will change my water pump on my 2011 90hp Optimax before the spring bass bite in NW Louisiana. :-)
Great video. One thing though: I read that you are supposed to renew the silicone gasket material at the rear of the pump (actually on the cross member behind the pump) to keep exhaust gasses from entering the pump area.
Great Video, WAY More Informative than any other, You mentioned the little things a newbie would not know to do, like rotate shaft clockwise when sliding upper housing over impeller, Great video!
Thanks for this ! I might suggest NOT to use grease, its a petroleum based product and thusly will weaken the rubber of the impeller. You can however pick up some silicone lubricant which is common in plumbing from Home Depot or a store similar. It will doom the same thing and not damage the rubber in any way. Others have used dish soap as well, however my advise is not to do that as typically if that sits for a while ( say you are winterizing the engine) then it may thicken and be slightly more adhesive when you first start engine. In addition to that too much and you create a bubbly mess..not ideal for cooling. Just think of Hot Tubs...and why you don’t use bubble bath in them..
Thank You for this Video. I did it Myself last night for the first time. I was a little worried at first because after i took off the 5 bolts of my 70hp Merc i couldn't pull the transfer case off. I was worried perhaps there was a bolt i had missed. Well i didn't miss any, all it needed was a couple of hits from my mallet and i used a screwdriver to wedge it apart. OMG was the impeller chewed up. Pisses me off i was at mechanic few weeks ago and they said the cooling system was fine.
you got lucky with the splines lining up. I have fought to get these back on before because the shift spline and the input shaft splines wouldn't go back in. a lot of rotating the flywheel and wiggling the shifter will get it, and its a pain sometimes
Sir Great Video This spring I plan on doing an impeller replacement on my Johnson 60 hp 2 stroke 2 cylinder you made it look easy you did a good job with the video Thanks for sharing JT
Thanks marynbeau. I have an 80 Hos Merc that didnt have water comin from the tell-tale, an was wonderin how to change the impeller, you saved me some hard earned, so thank you very much for the helpfull clip. She's up an runnin again and i have fish in the freezer. Big Grin.
Thank you so much for this video. I am attempting to order what I need and replace mine. I have already replaced fuel pump, plugs, runs great just noticed the puss stream lightening up some. So figured rest is new. Great video.
Replaced my 2003 Mercury 90hp elpt 4s with new complete kit and it did not include a "sling washer" (rubber seal that slides down over drive shaft against top of pump housing) so had to go buy one separate. Also noticed my motor (from factory) had used a bead of silicone across back of pump assembly (which acts as a seal when the lower unit is bolted back to motor so exhaust gas doesn't enter pump area) so made sure to do that.
Thanks for sharing. I'm going to try and replace the water pump on my 2001 115 Optimax. All 3 of the Marine dealers in my areas have poor reviews for service and customer relations, so I figure I can do it better than they can! How about a Video on how to tune up an outboard?
Your gear mechanism is spring loaded also make sure it doesn't spring back therefore when you mount back up your prop will be in gear make sure your prop spins freely while you're installing the lower unit
great video very very informative i love it how you explain everthing. i have 120 hp OD 1996 and reverse gear dont work, what do you think what should i check in lower unit, thats where problem is, linkage cable is where it needs to be. It rattles like crazy when i shift to reverse? thanks (bayliner 1700 ls)
thanks. does this motor leak oil from the engine if the lower is removed off the engine? I just did this replacement today and trimmed the motor all the way up without the lower in it and it started to leak oil. A lot of it.
I didn't put it in forward gear and put it back together ... I must have turned 1 gear a little bit because now it is gear weather I'm in forward neutral or reverse position... Any suggestions on how to correct the problem thanks Jim
I did all that and everything came apart fine EXECPT the impeller wont come off the drive shaft! How do I fix that? it will move side to side and upand down slightly but ut WONT come off!!! and I am stuck!
Sorry I didn’t cover ever step, just thought some things you could figure out own your own, like replace seals in reverse order they were removed, same with replacing lower unit, replace as taken off, if removed in neutral, replace in neutral.
