Did you know you could replace almost your entire dice set with a single die?
A D24 can be used in place of a D3, D4, D6, D8, D12, and even D%. Here's how

My set is just 1D3 and 1D4. You should see how many friends I lose when I have to roll a D%.

3×3×3×4 = 108. So you only have to reroll 8% of the time.

What is a "D%"?
@rpgabriel
@rpgabriel 5 лет назад
If you have a D24 at hand, just reroll if it gives you 21, 22, 23 or 24, and then you have a D20 also... no very accurate, but works.
@OgrallPrime
@OgrallPrime 2 года назад
You could use the d24 for d20. The way you would do this is to discard any rolls that are greater than 20, and roll again. Since the odds of such a roll are low, it works, and it doesn't change the statistics if the die is otherwise fair.

It Is statistically improbable, but I keep rolling my D24 and haven't gotten a 1-20 yet. Maybe give it another year.
@ArukenM

Interesting. Although, the way I'd replace the d% would be to use the d20 as a d10 to generate the digits. A lot less math and statistically closer to a proper d%, I believe.

Oh man, the d24 is classic... Doesn't do a d30 well either, but they haven't included d30 tables for a LONG time... :-)

Using the same logic you can just use a d12 and not hunt for a specialized die.
@michaelkindt3288
@michaelkindt3288 5 лет назад
But there isn’t an hole number to divide 12 by to get 8? I literally just ran through what happens when you divide numbers 1, 2, & 3 by 1.5 (=12/8), 1 would get you 1, 2 would get you 2, & 3 would get you 2. As you can see, 2 is clearly twice as likely to occur than 1 in this method, this alone should be enough to demonstrate that you can’t use a D12 to simulate a D8. (you can do the math yourself if you’re skeptical.)
@cmyk8964
@cmyk8964 2 года назад
@@michaelkindt3288 Roll a d12 twice for the d8. 12×12=144-8×18. So you can roll a d144 (12×d12+d12) and modulate it by 8. It can’t help you with d10 or d20 without rerolls, though.

If you only want to do division, just use a d60.
@michaelkindt3288

2:22 To roll a d100, you just need two rolls of d20, either doing _(d10 -1)*10+d10_ or _(d5 -1)*20+d20._ They both give you a perfect d100, with all results from 1 to 100 being equiprobable. 2:33 What you did is seriously hurting my feeling. Stop it there, Satan.

This is how the percentile dice works. Piggybacking on your explanation; Be sure you and your GM have defined which order you roll each digit. For this explanation, each numerated variable will be associated with its decimal place. x_n --> d20 (x_1, x_2, .., x_n) d10 --> ceiling(x_1/2) d100 --> ceiling((x_2 - 1)/2) * 10 + ceiling(x_1/2) d1,000 --> ceiling((x_3 - 1)/2) * 100 + ceiling((x_2 - 1)/2) * 10 + ceiling(x_1/2) You _can_ use the floor() function with floor( (d20 - 0.5) / 2 ) + 1. edit: Because I'm dumb.
@Onimaru112
@Onimaru112 2 года назад
Why be close to accurate for percentile when u just need to role the d20 as a d10 twice for a completely accurate percentile role?
@workingstiffdiogenes2195
@workingstiffdiogenes2195 Год назад
As others have said, the easiest way to get 1-20 with a d24 is to discard results 21-24. But it's just as easy to get 1-10. From 1-20, just read the last digit, discard 21-24. So a 3 is a 3, a 13 is a 3, and a 23 is re-rolled.

Jamie Mullen I disabled it for now because most people seem to be finding my videos on Twitter. Now that I've got the Patreon page going too, I wanted to limit all the social networks I have to update every time I post a video. I love the probability involved in rolling dice. I would love a manufactured 36 sided dice with the 2-12 outcomes for 2x D6. Do you know if there is such a thing out there?
@Salsmachev

I don't know if you even care about this three years later, but Dice Lab makes a set of dice that is a d3 and a d12, but printed in such a way that they have the same distribution as 2d6.

That's a pretty neat idea to use math to replace most of your dice. I'd honestly like to keep my dice set as it is though but because I like carrying around a bunch of pretty multi-colored dice. XD I'm also glad that you mentioned in the segment of "how to roll a D3" is to roll a d6 and divide by 2. I do it that way as well, but I know a lot of people that roll D3s by rolling a D4 and then just rerolling the 4s, and I absolutely abhor that method. It's not a very exact replacement, and it generally just feels wrong.

You could also roll a D2 (coin-flip dice), and D5 if you use either a D10 or D20 as a support die. Or if you use the D24 and reroll things 21 and over, you can still use the D24 for a D5, and a D10, and a D20. But if you use that method, you can almost roll any die you can imagine. ;) (whanna roll a D17? Roll a D24, reroll everything over 17). As long you roll one die, this should work out. In games I'm used with (older), there is often D3 used. And sometimes I didnt have just the right die like D8 or D12 or something like that. Thats when I learned, that in many cases you can apply de divition (rounding up) to a die that has double or three numbers more. But you can also upscale smaller dice, by doing Low or High rolls. Say you want to roll a D20 but dont have a D20, only a D10. You cant just roll 2D10 and add the numbers, because then you cant get 1, and the chanses are shifted (bellcurve). What you do instead is first roll any die that can show a low and high number. Like the D10. If you roll 1-5, it is considered low, and if you roll 6-10 its considered high. Then you roll the D10 again, and if the first one was low, you dont add anything, and if it was high you add 10. Works with everything. It is the same thing as if you dont have a D24, (that would be great to randomize a specific hour something happens at a day), you could first roll a dice, any dice to se if it is Low or High, to se if it is AM or PM, then roll the D12 again. And that will cover the 24 hours of a day. From 1 to 24. Cheers.

Practically the answer is no by the fact how this "one die for all" works. As a D6 od maybe even a D12-replacement it might have its merits. So that makes you spare one die. You can not equally roll the numbers needed when you are on a D4, D8, D10, D% or a D20 roll. That replacement die has literally 12 actual sides. Rolling a D4 with that can land you one of then two blind sides making the chances working against you to roll anything from 1 to 4. Or a D8 throw? Catastrophy. The way this one-die-for-all is used possiblyleaving you with four blind sides to hit, lowering the chances even more as it did already with a D4 throw. Interesting idea but nothing else I'd recommend.
@JonYodice

it truly isnt. roll a d4, you need a d4. if it says roll a d6, you need a d6 and so on and so on. dice are too small and weightless to whine about carrying them around. i have a few d24s but only for collection and amazement purposes. they have no use in RPGs unless the master is clever and creative enough to come up with a reason to let the gods choose a number between 1 and 24

With the maths presented here you'd never roll 13% or something like 37%. Neigh possible. Just go with the intended dice sets since they are not heavy and you can keep them in these little bags anyway.

dice are part of the fun. Actually play online games and not a huge fan of cg dice rolls. I like have all the different dice, the sound they make, the designs and colors are also pleasing. So getting rid of the dice for a single die kinda kills the fun slightly.

I like to have a separate set of dice to represent every class (only core classes, I’m not fuckin crazy) and whenever I have a character with an animal companion or steed or familiar or the like, THEY are represented by a set that is just a white d24 and a black d20. So the ranger are my green polyset and his dog can be just these two dice.

@@patrickokeeffe3584 for D8, there are numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, so the pencil is rolled if it is an odd number then split that list of numbers to 1, 2, 3, 4 if it is the even number then split that list to 5, 6, 7, 8. Then do that again several times until you get a single number.
