To prevent your Bonsai from being pot-bound and ultimately starving to death, It's crucial to repot, or transplant regularly. A tree becomes pot-bound as it uses up the available nutrients in the soil and the roots grow to the shape of the pot.
Fore more info also see: www.bonsaiempire.com/basics/b...
Due to the lack of space and nutrients, the trees stop growing, and if no action is taken, it will surely die. Repotting or transplanting your Bonsai will resupply the tree with the nutrients it needs to grow and flourish.

@bonsaiempire

Well you can dig around your tree (quite widely) this fall to give the tree time to grow a more compact root system. Then next spring you can dig it out and place it in a large container.

It’s mid summer, and the Azalea came with blooms, and gardenia looks super healthy tho has a few yellow leaves which I assume was because of transport.

Hello, I'm new to this and am trying to understand the basics of keeping bonsai. I've been given a ficus that's been potted in what looks to be normal everyday potting soil, the kind you'd put a houseplant in. Should I repot it in something closer to the soil recommended in this video as soon as possible, or is it okay to leave it like that until the roots start to overgrow, like advised here? Also, it seems like the tree in this video was also originally potted in something much more loamy. Is there any significance to that?
@bonsaiempire
@bonsaiempire 7 месяцев назад
I'd repot in the next early spring, into proper bonsai substrate. The bonsai substrate drains much better, which your tree will like - but you will need to check daily to see if your tree needs water.

Whats the difference between organic and inorganic soil? And why is akadama inorganic?
@bonsaiempire
@bonsaiempire 2 года назад
Dead plant matters such as peat, leaf-litter, or bark are described as being organic soil components. The potential problem with organic soil components is that organic matter breaks down and reduces drainage over time. Inorganic soil components contain little to no organic matter such as volcanic lava, calcite, and baked/fired clays.
