Great job! I rescued a planter from Lowes that has a variety of dying plants! Amongst them are staghorn, monkey tail and several snake plants. I think I’m going to separate them all. This is super helpful!

I have a staghorn fern that I potted/mounted in a small teak bowl and hang sideways on a wall. I have in the past mounted one on a teak cheese board from the thrift store that has little plastic feet to hold it off the wall. Just add a hook or eye to a tropical hardwood thing that's not designed to lay totally flat, and you don't really have to worry about the drywall. The big thing for me watering mounts is having a place for them to be able to sit and soak in water effectively and then somewhere to drip dry for a bit before rehanging. My current mount is too large for me to soak the whole thing -fertile fronds and all- effectively so I mist them frequently and do root ball soaks of the bowl every few weeks. Let that sphag dry and use it later to line an outdoor basket, or use it as part of the medium in a bog planter!

Looks great Erin! I’m so glad you found the wire cutters because that was getting toasty there for a bit. :) My best friend in FL has a Staghorn fern the size of a VW bug that she just stuck between two huge branches of an Oak tree, and a smaller (I’m using that term loosely lol) one that is just stuck onto her other Oak. Total shade and they only get watered in the Summer if there’s no rain, which would be highly unusual. They thrive in that shady, humid environment and are just stunning. Give yours full shade, humidity, an occasional drink and you will need a construction crane the next time you have to pot it. As for the moss - I mulch a lot of planters with shredded coconut coir and spaghnum will work perfectly well too. Thanks for sharing; that was fun to see.

We have a huge one that we moved onto a monkey orange/apple tree (makwakwa tree) . It is as tough as nails. Gets a little sad during dry winter months but perks up once the rains come. There are now quite a few new plants that have established themselves in the tree and on other trees and a bougainvillea. They seem to manage to settle in more easily on rough bark plants. We did transplant another onto a lichi tree which is doing well. Just tied it onto the tree with a thin stretchy piece of fabric. Hot humid coastal conditions here. Yours should do well with all that nourishment Erin.

I was interested in what you were doing as I perused the internet. I live in Sydney and have many stag horns and elk horns on wood and trees. The ones on trees collect their own native leaves and the ones on wood I just pack leaves behind them. Just one thing to note. I noticed you buried a pup down the side. It will die. Next time cut it off and mount it and you slowly get another one. Their simple to propagate just cut under the whole round leaf to about an inch and that’s it. They are a very hardy plant. Sometimes you think their dead and the rain comes and they burst back into life. Matt. Horticulturist

I just visited The Fairchild Botanical Garden in Coral Gables, FLA. Massive staghorn ferns hanging from huge chains. My friends that I was visiting had them on their palms and I love them, even though I know I could never grow them in NYS-Zone 6b. Never thought I could grow as a house plant. Good to know if I was ever inspired to do that, but I usually kill house plants, so not sure I could take the guilt with a majestic staghorn.
