I grow 80% of my orchids in leca, some I have found need a lot of time to transition, and others... jump right in as if nothing ever changed. I use the self watering set up for the main part 🌸

Thank you for the feedback! Yes, transition is taking some time. First we saw the roots come out and now some stems/leaves. But yes, definitely takes a bit of time, but what a joy to see them rebounding! 🪴🪴🪴

Very good instructions. Will you be doing any updates on these plants? Any other maintenance involved? Or just keep adding nutrient water as needed.

Hi! and yes, I will be giving an update on the orchids. Flushing leca is important as well as checking on roots. So please watch our orchid update video "2 months later". We have some more info in that video. And thanks for subscribing! M

I thought water level was to be below the drainage holes? The holes in that pot are pretty low, how does that work?
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN 3 года назад
Hi there. It depends on the orchid. For example, if your orchid has a lot of long roots, place some Leca 1- 2" in bottom of net container, then place your roots in leca, then backfill more leca. Next add in just a little bit of water to cache pot container - just enough to cover bottom layer of leca in the net container. Goal is to have roots sitting just above the water line in cache pot. But, if you have shallow roots, like in my case for some of my phals, you want to have water a little higher up in cache pot to help the Leca better transfer moisture to the shallow roots. And you can always throttle down your water level las orchid roots develop and grow down into the Leca. Hope this helps. M

Hi..been looking ard on youtube for potting media for my 3 phalaenopsis. I think this is the best option. Thanx for the tutorial. From your new friend from 🇸🇬.

Thank you! So glad the information was helpful. Also, I recently did an update video, where I reviewed the progress of these phalaenopsis orchids 3 months later, its posted on my channel if you want to check it out. It's titled "Orchid Alert" . All our orchids exploded with new roots and we are even getting a new flower spike & baby orchid bud! They love Leca. Thanks again for your interest, and I hope your orchids thrive! 🪴😃

Thnx for the useful info Michael. I will check out your 'Orchid Alert' vid in a bit. I will go and buy the leca this wkend n get on with the repotting. But my phalaenopsis have lots of aerial roots. Should i just leave the aerial roots alone when repotting my orchid plant?
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN 3 года назад
Hi, im so sorry about the late reply, on the aerial roots, check to see if they are firm to touch... if they are firm, do not cut, but if they are squishy and soggy feeling, they they are dead or dying and should be cut off. Remember to spray your cutting shears and plant roots with 3% hydrogen peroxide to keep any pathogens from getting into your orchid. Hope this helps and I hope your orchids love their leca!

So no wicking is used? I want to transition a den-phal from bark to LECA. Will it be ok to follow your method without wicking string?
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN 3 года назад
Hi there. No wicking needed. The leca transfers moisture from pebble to pebble up the container.😀🪴

Hey, do you add nutrients to the water every time you water the orchids? Or is it just once in a while. Thank you
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN 8 месяцев назад
Hi! We like to add the nutrients when we flush and rinse out the leca during growing season ( march thru sept) . But in winter months we don't add fertilizer (oct thru feb). Hope this helps! 😀🪴

Just started to watch your videos, very informative and so well explained. Thank you .. Have you heard of sprinkling cinnamon on roots that we cut to prevent fungus?
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN 3 года назад
Thank you! And yes, I am familiar with several wonderful uses of cinnamon... one way is to sprinkle on soil to help control plant pests and the other, as you mention- to inhibit fungus spores on cuttings and in soil i general. But, I have been lucky with no need to add cinnamon on any of our many plant propagation cuttings, we have not had any bouts of fungus issues ( fingers crossed) but it won't hurt to add it if you feel you may have fungus spore issue.. Hope this was helpful M

Great instructional video! I have a watering question. After this set up how do you continue to water the orchid? Do you just lift the net pot out of the decorative pot and add water below in the decorative pot as you showed? You don't water the plant at all from the top ...only let it soak the water from the bottom? Thanks for your help!
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN 2 года назад
Hi! We allow the water to rise up through the Leca pebbles, no need to water from above. The Leca pebbles bring moisture to the roots. We only water from top when we are flushing leca/roots (every month or so) 😀🪴

Thank you so much for all the information. I’m just starting to change my orchid to leca. Where did you get orchid pots?
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN 2 года назад
Hi! We got most of ours from IKEA, But some of the pot sizes are rather hard to come by… they sell out fast. Other pots we got online or at home goods. On repotting, if you have very little to no roots on your orchid, you can also consider adding a 2”single strand of sphagnum moss vertically within the LECA ( or nylon twine)to help wick up water high into the pebbles. We tried that on a few of our smaller orchid plant rescues and it helped them shoot out roots quicker. Hope your orchids thrive!😀🪴
