actually two days ago i saved my friend from drowning in the pool. my other friend pushed her in the deep area and i went to help her right away, she is heavier than me so it was a challenge. i swam there as fast as i could and pushed her from her back and i tried to pull her when i reached the shallow part, she was choking from the water and i squeezed her stomach and patted her back then she stopped choking . and while she was drowning/choking none of my friends tried to help except me they all stood there watching her and not reacting or doing anything to help. and I'm just 13

Im the same age as you and I was in the pool by myself because Im a string swimmer but my grandparents are watching me at all times and there are 10 lifeguards for this one average sized pool and they always have the floating things they use I domt know what they are called but I was in the pool and I love going under and I spwas swimming under and a younger child was at the bottom. Bearing in mind this water is 4ft deep and the child is about 3 ft tall with no armbands or anything and no one even noticed but me! I pulled her up to the surface and the lifeguard took her. Had to get everyone out the pool and go home.

I had a chance to save a child's life when I was 10... Now... When ever i see somebody about to be in danger or in danger i spring into action... I have heroic reflexes because i watched a kid (2) years old get legs ran over

This does not work for deep water, they need to train on how to swim while supporting somebody in deep water

aka how to support someone in an awakening process - don't panic, just keep swimming

Thank you, that is very helpful. But another thing I'm wondering is lets say you are one mile away from shore and you have nothing to float on and vehicle help isn't getting any time soon and the person isn't breathing so you need to get him to shore as quickly as possible. Is there a technique or position using which you will not make them inhale any more water and at the same time be able to swim with them at reasonable speed?

I have to disagree, there are many cases of drown victims being unconscious for 20+ min and still not sustain any permanent damage. I'm not a great swimmer, but I can swim at a reasonable speed even if I'm dragging 80kg if it's only for 1 mile. But if you drag a person as you would drag a bag you will be doing more harm than help.

Unconscious for 20 min? That sounds like a whole day!

I take lifesaving classes and am training to be a lifeguard. We don't use an objects we use both of our hands one on the shoulder blade and one on the inside of the shoulder and we pull them around.

You should show techniques in deep water. The first part of the video is a joke. Great job retrieving someone walking on the bottom of a pool.

Don't you have to cover their airways to insure water isn't going up their nose or mouth??

A distance swim of this type towing an uncoonscious person that is not breathing is called a body recovery. Without floatation aid to focus on the bouyancy to preform mouth to mouth. At bare minimum you need a full PFD or surf board flippers and the stamina of an olympic swimmer. Like I said body recovery, If your in known shark infested water let your budddy go.

It is not "very very difficult to manipulate someone else in the water". Give bouyancy...they float, pull... they come, push ...they go.

compare those miraculous few to the majority. 4-6 minute brain damage can occur. Doing a 1 armed side stroke over a mile, of lets say non currented no chop water 21 minutes for yourself now add 8okg(=/- 170 lbs) and your both wearing slick suits ...still 20 minutes NO WAY! And then your gonna resuscitate this soul. Best of luck. I'll get the body bag.
