You're a literal lifesaver! I slacked off on learning Kali and finally returned today, only to discover that I'd completely forgotten the complex manner in how I'd typed my initial password for the machine. So glad I checked the internet before deciding to go through the inevitable pain and time of having to reinstall the whole thing.
Seriously, though, I couldn't have done it without you. You saved me a ton of time and frustration, and I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate it. You're doing great work, and you're making a real difference in the tech community. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Keep up the amazing work, and I look forward to checking out more of your content in the future. Peace!
This was too easy lol! Thank you kind Sir!! Also, bonus points for speaking clear english, having clean sound and great articulation! You have a new subscriber....take care man!!
No, sorry. Change the default creds for increased security. Store the new creds in a password manager like bitwarden. Never stick w the default creds that everyone knows.
You earned a subscriber, I wasn’t paying attention when I installed Kali to repair windows. I know my way around Debian and Kali but didn’t think to use the bootloader
Man... THANK YOU! had troulble on restart, but "reboot -f" got me outta there and the password change had saved , ALL GOOD! saved me hours of reloading all the extras i had installed! oh by the way i was in virtual box! thanks CONDA!!!
Wow, incredibly helpful! Thank you so much! For anyone reading the comments before watching the video....if this is your issue, your problem will be solved in under 3 minutes.
Guys if doesn't works the method, tries this before of passwd: 1 #: mount -o remount,rw / 2 #: chmod 0640 /etc/shadow 3 #: passwd (The same than show up the video) reboot the machine and done.
I sincerly appreciate the effort you put into this video. Have had the problem of not being able to execute certain commands due to not having the privilege and now, that problem is solved thanks to you. Salut!
Dude thank you so much. I am learning to hack and I forgot about it for a while and came back to a locked vm with a password I didn't remember. You're a life saver
Worked just like you explained, thanks for the advice! I do have one question though, if it's this easy to change the password, isn't this a weakness in the system? Because if someone where to break into your house and take your laptop/pc, they can very easily get into your device without trying to crack your password?
Thank you! You saved my life! We made dual boot PCs last year, and I couldn’t for the life of me get the password to work, even though it was an easy one. Turns out it was the user name I was getting wrong, now I have stored it somewhere. It’s been about a year since I could access Kali. Yippee! Now to work out why it starts Kali first and not Windows the default.
Everything works up until having to reboot the final time. Reason being is I am not on a virtual machine. I have a dedicated system. Reboot command doesn't work what do I do?
this is the same for me, it reads that it failed to talk to the 'init daemon' and that the system has not been booted with 'systemd as init system (PID 1)'
For everyone wondering why they can't see their password when typing, this is because it's a password and it won't appear on the screen. It is still being typed out even if you don't see it, so make sure you correctly type it out and press enter, then type it out again and everything should work :)
Thumbs Up for the info & I need to ask if resetting the password is so simple then what is the point of having one. Anyone with access to the machine can set / reset a different password.
I have VMWorkstation17 installed. I went through the whole process, then after typing in the new password (twice) , I went to the || icon and selected restart guest. Is this different to a version I don't have? It looks slightly different from your page. Are you on VMWorkstation17 Pro? The only option I see is Restart Guest in terms of rebooting. Let me know if there is anything I could do differently. Thank you.
In many cases, once someone else has physical access to a device it's considered compromised. To prevent this specific thing from happening, you could potentially set a grub password. I have not personally tested this on Kali, but you will get the general idea from this article: www.debian.org/doc/manuals/securing-debian-manual/lilo-passwd.en.html
So I had to do this but since my drive was encrypted it did ask me to unlock my disk before allowing the bash shell to run. Luckily I could remember that password haha. So if you are using it on any device as default OS then I suggest encrypting it to stop anyone else from doing this.
I have a problem, when I load the command in grut and give it control + x it restarts me to enter username and password and it does not let me put the password commands that you keep putting on youtube
Im having a little bit difficault. I made every single step succesfully, but... In the last step - when i tried to made my login to the system - it said "login failed". Anyone please?
I have changed the password but it still tells me wrong password i did the same steps and changed it again into another thing and it still told me not working what do i do?
I’m aware I’m really late however how do you change the password when you first set it up as I’ve been greeted with a login page without me creating anything once I restart the pc or take the usb out when restarting and putting it back in once getting out of windows [I sound like a noob I’m aware but I would appreciate any tips or help (: ]

Unfortunately, this didn't work. Everything worked just as you described but when it actually came to entering the password, Kali wouldn't accept it. It would flash black for about 2 seconds after entering the new password but just show the login screen again. I tried it numerous times hoping too. Nice video though and I'm glad it was able to help others, but luck next time, huh?!
Just going through the comments and found you; I’m also going through the same thing, when it gets the point for me to enter my new password it freezes.
