How to restore scratchy turntable dustcovers with a polishing machine

Who isn't strong need to be smart, the most simple way to get that old scratchy dust cover as new again. All it need is a bottle cheap (1 euro) abrasive cream you use in the kitchen and a cheap polish machine you can find new in the shop for 25 euro. Want to take away the deeper scratches too? just use first a cream with a stronger abrasive level (a strong car paint polisher)and finish it of with the cream i here used.

Very good work. I just did this with my Technics SL-D202 dustcover. I first wet sanded with 2000 grit, then 3000 grit, then Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and Meguiar's Ultimate Polish on a Harbor Freight dual action long throw polisher. Perfect clarity. A little bit of the polish on a microfiber towel took the tarnishing off of the metal power and cue switches too.

I wonder. In two or three weeks - new scratches. I cant stand them things.
@ben-7403

@@cmkilcullen8176 some scratches returned over time (after a cross-country move, etc.) but it's still looking better than any vintage dust cover at a hi-fi shop. The recent scratches are light. It'd only take 20 minutes with some compound and polish to take them out again, no wet sanding necessary 👍 Would I do it again? Possibly, for the right unit. It's a lotta work!

hey ! I've just been doing exactely the same the last two days !!! I bought a stageline ing 220 turntable with a scatched cover for 60 €. I tried sanding with 400, 2000, 5000 sand paper, with water, toothpaste, Mirror... but it didn't really work. The cover became smooth, but still somewhat opaque. Eventually I got the polisher from my cellar, and that did the job ! Now my turntable is like new. My advice would be to start sanding with 400 paper to get rid of all the major scratches and make the surface homogeneous, and then do the polishing. you can do the sanding with the polishing machine, by putting a sheet of sanding paper between the cover and the polisher disk. Make sure all is clean, and no particules get between the cover and the polisher or you'll get little circles on your cover from the the elliptical movement of the polisher. Use a towel to lay down your cover rather than newspaper, it'll absorb the vibration.

Ah, great advice. Just bought a Pioneer PL-71 turntable with a really scratched up cover, and always wondered if a buffing wheel would work, until now.

Great tip about the cracking risk due to the heat - you probably saved a few covers. Nice to see the cream cleaning liquid works. I'd try a regular toothpaste. One caution with toothpastes or cleaning creams, some may contain some sort of grit so need check before using them.

I always wet-sand first, starting with 800, then 1000, then 1200, through 6000, and finally 12,000. These sanding assortment packs are available at Hobby Lobby. You can tell when each grit is finished by the feel of the paper as it glides across the surface. My final finishing is done with the buffer to an absolute crystal clear finish.

Good video and great job! When I’ve done work like this, I start off by wet sanding (fresh water with a few drops of liquid dish soap) with 2000 grit sandpaper. Wash it off and starting with clean water and repeat with 4000, 6000, and 8000 grit. Clean it off and then hand polish with Novus number 2 polish. It turns out clear as glass.

Could you please tell me what Meguires Plast X is??? What are the contents of this product? I live in Switzerland so there is no hope on finding it. Is a good car polish good too? Also, how long did you polish the turntable lid with each grit?? You list a 2000, 4000 , 6000 & 8000 grit sandpaper. I would need to know how long you polished the lid with each of these grits. What did you use for a polishing machine? A drill attachment or a rotating car polishing machine? Look forward to your reply! The Bandit

yeah i did this on an old 80's JVC goodwill find. it had lots of scratches and gouges. Used a buffing wheel that i put on my handdrill. the secret is to do it in maybe 10 to 20 second intervals and then check the plastic for excessive heat. too much heat will cause the plastic to get too hot and will craze (melt). if that happens, you have to sand it with sand paper and then try and polish it out. easiest just to take it slow and easy the first time!

Looks good Andrew, I avoid using paper towel napkins as they add to the swirling scraches. Always try to use a micro fiber or cotton or chamos to clean off right residual polish to guard against swirling. But for a first time using the wheel really nice job.

These covers are a pain for sure. Even microfiber cloths are too scratchy for my dust cover. It is damn near impossible to really restore these things. They way too easily can be scratched- so easily. It ridiculous . They don't keep off dust and they get ugly very fast. Quite useless IMHO.

Je kunt ook heel fijn schuurpapier gebruiken met heel veel water. Ik heb daar ooit de lampen van mijn Honda en een stofkap van een platenspeler mee gepolijst... helemaal helder!

Looks way better than it did. I have a few original dust-covers that would benefit from that treatment. To me,an original dust-cover is better than a new, reproduction one.

Car polish would have been even better for the last step. It contains finer particles and wax this makes a perfect finish.

Careful about waxes - they might contain solvents that attack the plastic - test in a small spot first in case...

I would use 1000 grit wet/dry paper, then a light hand polishing. In case you don't have a budget for a power polisher.

Je kan het combineren met water dan word het niet zo warm en kun je langer polijsten. Je kan het verschil goed zien. Goede tip voor de mensen die dit niet weten. Leuke film dre.

This vibration is making your floor behave alike a speaker diafragm..sound below is very high Andrew...living in an appartment it is better to put something soft below to block vibrations to go to your floor because it is a ceiling from the appartment below you.

A grear "system" for polishing plastic is.... NOVUS, Part 3 (corse compound), Part 2 (fine compound) and Part 1 (polymer sealer/polish). Use a small, true ORBITAL polisher, not a large rotary style A small orbital will not have heating issues (or unexpectedly throw the cover across the room). Most turntable covers, no matter how dull, have very fine scratches and you can skip the Novus 3. The top's always the worst, maybe lightly polish on the sides. Avoid the inside if possible, that area is usually in very good shape. Just wash it well. Think you're finished work?, let the polymer dry overnight and hand polish with a soft 100% COTTON cloth. Cloths with polyester blend will re-scratch it, damage your hsrd work and look less than perfectly clear. PS..... if it's really, really bad, you can wet sand it with 3000 to 5000 grit pads first. Initially, it will look "really bad" but will then clean right up with the compound. Works for me, LOTS and LOTS or times.

Pain in the .... Cleaning - fair at best. Buying a new one - waste of money. Dust covers are the most useless and take away the aesthetics more than add. Acrylic and plastics seem to be just simply not the right material - and it hasn't been for years and years now. I don't get it.

You need a polish applicator that actually rotates. Those just vibrate and are pretty useless. Drill attachment polish head is much better. 2000 grit water paper then Meguires PlastX. I get them as new in about 15 minutes.
