This is why Brian is one of my favorite guys to watch. No bs, don’t go buying this or that, just gets his message across and cuts out the crap. Thanks for the tips!!
Bruhh real shit man just explain what he loves passion for fishing that's how I feel. At the end of the day a 50 cent lure can catch monsters and lots of fish depends on fish and just finding them
B - I write the depth on the bait's belly with a fine-tip marker. Helps to remember. And I add an "S" if it's a suspending bait. An S10 is a bait that dives to 10' and suspends.
You are spot on about locations being tougher to catch em on squarebill. I can't get em to bite on squarebill in any of the rivers around me. They'll wear out top water lures and soft plastics but they rarely hit my squarebills unless I'm fishing lakes or ponds.
B Lat!!! Way to be class act man. It gets so old hearing people cram products down your throat. Very rarely do dudes give guys the Juice with out making them think they have to have certain gear or it won’t work.
You are such a great (terrific) teacher. I wish you and youtube were around when I was first learning to bass fish. I'm watching all your vids because there's always something more to learn not to mention a refresher course never hurts anyone at my age. Jim
Best fisherman on youtube! Thanks for all these awesome tips. My favorite thing to do now that I'm back into Bass fishing is to go to one of your videos on how to use a bait ive never used and then go catch something on it. I've always wondered how to fish these and I cant wait to get out on the water and try it out. Thanks again!
Perfect. Was looking for the speed/techniques for how to reel a squarebill. That and so much more here. This boosts my confidence in using a squarebill. Thank you!
Awesome video for everyone to learn new techniques to something they may not already know, I learned a few pointers too. Also enjoyed the freedom seeds being sent in the background lol. Thanks man
I appreciate you mentioning that you should learn the techniques before you buy new equipment, one of the reasons that you are my go to for fishing technique information. It means a lot to see the family man side of fishing as well as the tournament side, thank you.
Rapala OG tiny 04 has been an absolute UNIT for me this last month. Not exactly a square bill but it does all the things a squarebill does, and the bass are fired up for it.
Hey Brian just wanted to say thanks for your videos. I recently started bass fishing again after a long time of not fishing. Things sure are different. I’ve based a lot of what I do from your techniques and set ups. I’ve been catching them also! Keep doing your thing brother, PLEASE!!
I’ve been throwing a squarebill on straight braid and have been killing em lol. I get running a leader is more ideal but it’s been working great so haven’t changed to using a leader or straight fluoro/mono just yet.
Love the videos man. I use a square bill crank bait a lot up here in Massachusetts. I find I get alot of strikes like u said stop and go but up here I find if you let the bait kinda float to the top when you stop and then start they hit em. Good luck the rest of the season.
Great video cranking is a technique I would love to learn more about, I have thrown some square bills and lipless before I’ve found with some crank baits my hook up ratio tends to be better with a medium power.
Awesome video. I barley follow any pro fisherman, but b lat, keeps it real, good video and thanks for the info. I caught my self doing some of the things yout saying to do. But those few extra tips could help me up my game with the crankbaits
You definitely have to mix up your retrieves, it takes erratic speed more often than not, and I catch a lot of fish on black baits. Black is the new fire tiger.
I have good luck with white sides and blue back. I also have been using a red sharpie to put a small dot near the hook holders. Not sure if that helps but I’ve been catching them recently so who knows.
I like crank baits with about 60-70 lbs braided line in the weeds, rocks , and brush piles. Most the time I can get it back when it hangs up on something.
So a medium power moderate action good for 1.5 cranks or should I bump it up to a medium heavy moderate? I have a 7ft medium moderate with 15lb fluoro with a kast king baitcasting reel. Just looking for insight is all and sorry if it sounds dumb. I'm trying to learn how to learn how to use crankbaits first here on RU-vid for awhile and then usually like to then go out after learning as much as possible to become more proficient.
Good content, but one observation. If I had someone in the boat with me sitting on their rear while I have to reel and grab the net myself, I think I'd throw them out of the boat. lol
It's usually the bill that hangs up/snags not the hooks. Early on I snapped line a bunch before I learned better how to run a crank. Once you realize they will basically back out of the snag, it makes it easier. And like B-Lat said throw some slack, or just stop reeling if it bogs down. Typically it will float back out Funny part is, I'd find the plug floating later on and get my lure back.
@@BrianLatimerFishing That's been my experience for the most part. I couldn't always get every lure back, I bank fish mostly so sometimes they floated out of casting reach lol. Thanks for the continued how to's. Extremely helpful
One thing I have never caught a bass on is a deep diving crankbait. Caught tons on everything else though. Just no luck on the Deep diving no matter how I fish it
I support all of you guys especially you Matt Randy , Edwin Evers, and a few other guys, whom are guides that take people out or people that just follow the Pro Circuit, I appreciate everything you know and a lot of pros that got these channels have been hacked where us people that subscribed has been manipulated and some of the things they can say is oh I’m sorry I get it there’s scammers out here but there should be a way that someone shouldn’t be able to get into a giveaway contest through someone else’s page and then come to find out that they were on a short list of winners were people didn’t respond back. So I guess now because I made a comment about something I guess I’m restricted from seeing all the comments made but it’s no big deal to me I’m born and bred in Baltimore city would never kill me made me stronger and I love everything about the way you present things I know you’re mad or little upset about an 18 pound bags but you’re a damn good fisherman brother and I love the fact that you’re not a selfish person anybody that watches people and knows about real, you’re a good person and a good teacher and I like to thank you because I didn’t believe in Z man beats until you and My uncle and I have a listen and I have learned you have patience like I said before I got every flavor of your worms best ones that work for me or spray grass I wish you best of luck and nice video on the square bill thank you Brian for everything
Great video. I learned what you mean about overshooting on depth. I fish from the bank in lakes that are max depth 6’. Realistically with inexperience using a baitcaster and having to cast in tight quarters more than likely I’m only fishing in like 2-4’ deep. I bought two squarebills in that 1-3’ and nothing. Bought one more thar dives 3-6’ took it out, switched to 12 lb test from 15 and third cast had one. I was able to feel the bottom and they do really back out of hang ups. Retrieve, pause, retrieve pause sweep. Fun way to fish.
@brianlatimerfishing my main problem with crank baits is my line always gets caught in the hooks when casting .. so when I'm retrieving the bait it doesn't perform correctly 🤦🏽♂️
Really enjoyed all the info B! I was wondering about the really deep crankbaits gear needed, I hear 7'6 medium heavy with a moderate action is need for DD 15 to 20 or could I use a 7'6 heavy fast rod since I can't find any 7'6 MH Moderate action in my local shops. What's you intake on the DD crankbaits gear needed?
I definitely have more hookups using a fiberglass rod when fishing crank baits. I use a 7’ 4” medium heavy/ moderate St Croix Legend Glass and switching to that rod made me start liking crank baits before that I lost nearly every fish I got to bite a crank bait
I live in northern Illinois, the rivers I fish, as well as many lakes have a lot of northerns and the occasional musky. I use braided line all the time, but just use lighter braid and don't set the hook as hard.
Sweet! I just got one of these. I'm normally a fly fishermen, but I've been getting into gear fishing for bass. The crankbait I got showed up on the side of my float tube one day when I had my local lake all to myself.
I've always been all about trout but I started getting the itch during the summer when I'd really have to travel to catch them. Bass are a fun way to go bend a rod. And if I want lunch I can usually grab some panfish.
Excellent video esp. for a newb like me. My fave tip: (paraphrasing) don't worry about all that stuff cause you don't know what you're doing. Just get a crankbait and start throwing. Thank you sir.
Just finished watching your top 3 lures you don't use/like - you threw me when you said crankbait, but then this popped up after and it makes sense now. You very specifically meant deep diving crankbait, ironically specific depth is never mentioned when people say deep diving though. 10 ft? 20 ft? What's "deep"? Been a fan for years my man, before RU-vid made fishing popular again. Algorithm is screwing you though, I couldn't find this 10 hour old video by searching for crankbait fishing - I had to add your name. Populated a bunch of old videos and some from lesser channels statistically speaking. Keep keepin it real my man, much love peace
Hey Brian who makes your hand made plugs? I see you throwing some small flat side hand made and I assuming they are balsa. I’ve ordered some in the past but was wandering who’s you use.
And they knock the heck out of it when hitting too. On getting them off logs and snags. It’s really a nice presentation since they run shallow and you rarely have to break one off. Great video as always!
I like to use an older (90s) Abu Ambassadeur for cranking, 5.3:1 gearing. The smaller 4600C3 Ambassadeurs are my favorite for crankbaits. Rugged and simple, I don't think I'd ever be able to wear one out. Thanks again B-Lat.
great information cranking is my weakest link i built setup this year just for deep cranking a favorite cranking rod and a abu revo beast x hopefully i do well this year !
Man I really appreciate you making these kind of videos. I love the in depth explanation because it helps me know the why. You also are great on camera not dry at all, very easy to watch the full video. You saying no braid and not saying why is killing me though 😆. Keep up the awesome work
It has to do with not pulling the hooks out of the fish’s mouth. First you want a rod with some give to it so you don’t over power and yank the treble hooks out when you get excited that you got a bite. Then you want your line to have some stretch for the same reason. Mono has the most stretch, fluoro has medium stretch, and braid has none at all. Given that Brian is a professional angler, he likely has an ideal cranking setup that covers all of these bases. If you have just one or two setups like most of us, look for a medium fast action rod that bends more towards the middle of the blank. Then spool up with braid and use leaders to match your technique. A long mono or fluoro leader paired with that rod and braid will work great. If you still lose a fish, then loosen your drag a bit so there is room for them to pull. I fish almost exclusively crankbaits and that’s what I use. I rarely lose fish and catch a ton. Hope that helps
