How to rev match 

When the subtitles are on, it says "music" during the engine noise. How accurate.

I just learned how to do this properly the other week. 30 years old and still learning. Cars don't seem to get old.

Now I understand why people rev their car/motorcycle a bit when they almost reach a traffic light. All this time I thought they were trying to show off or something

Just a correction, sorry if this was confusing at 2:10 I said "5th gear from 4th". I mean't to say 5th to 4th gear. DON'T REV MATCH going up a gear! lol, this wouldn't work that well. Rev match is easy. Heel and toe while braking hard before turning in to a corner at maximum speed is another thing. Especially without abs. ;)

So I disengaged the clutch, mashed the throttle , down shifted from 4 to 1st dumped the clutch and now I’m trying to explain to my insurance how I managed to drive into the side of culvert on a dry straight road in the middle of the day, might take some practice ....

This is really difficult to master but it's awesome. I still mess it up sometimes but it really helps during overtaking maneuvers or when going up a steep slope.

Thanks for the video. This is the first technique to learn before going into heel-toe downshift as the latter is simply adding braking over it. But for many, like I did, I started with rev-match alone to simply master the downshift without braking at the same time. Nice camera angles, well places, props to the several replay and repetition to see it done clearly.

Okay, I'm an idiot so I need a little bit of confirmation here to know if I learned and understood rev matching correctly. Say I'm going from 4th to 3rd. 1. I push down onto the clutch pedal, disengaging the transmission from engine. 2. Shift down with the gear stick to change gears. 3. Tap the throttle pedal to rev the engine to match the speed of the transmission. 4. Let go of the clutch pedal to reconnect the two.

something you forgot to mention, this is a fairly slower process with a turbo car, e90 V8's are very responsive! it takes me about twice this amount of time with my 2.0T Genesis coupe

I'm revmatching so much now that my engine always jumping from happiness under the hood

revmatching and even heeltoe is not too hard in itself, but getting it consistent is not easy. it really helps me to try to be smooth instead of fast tho

Well I just went and tried this out on the streets and all I can say is you make it look easy

There's another way to rev match (and it's more for deceleration): clutch in, feather the gas a little to rev match, and let the clutch come out. This is actually better for your clutch for obvious reasons. I use this when braking (I brake with my right foot and also put a little pressure on the gas pedal) I don't know how much this will help your clutch in the long term, and it's obviously not useful for emergency braking, but it's also really fun. And that's mainly the reason why I do it XD

I naturally always blipped when downshifting. Sounded so nice I did it a lot and learned how to do it nicely

I’m happy I learned this at an early age. I use it both in cars and motorcycles. My friends and brother always wondered what I was doing. They thought I was just showing off lol. I need to work on my heel-toe technique tho.

This is a easy way.. Here in europe its learned that you have to get in neutral first, then press the throttle to get ur rpm on the right amount and THEN clutch back to the previous gear..

But, the tricky and most common need is braking and rev matching in the same move - the so-called "heel-toe" technique. Much more practice to master but the only way to drive smooth and fast on a curvy road.

Okay yes he says you can blow your engine rev matching but you have to really pin it and drop the clutch Fast. While learning overrevving is normal , don't rely on shifting without it, once you get a feel for the pedal you'll be fine, while learning just be easy on the clutch when letting it out and move the shifter lightly you'll feel when you do it right

I’m still learning in my car it’s a little hard because I own a manual 2014 mustang and the gas pedals in mustang are kind of heavy as in when you try to blip it you have to push the gas harder than you would just any manual car so it’s going to take a while before I get it .

Your car sounds great. I usually double clutch though when I rev match my Challenger. Probably doesn't make a difference,that's just what works for me. But anyway your car sounds great.

So that’s what you call it. I been doing this for a while and didn’t know if it was a thing lol.

Only one problem with this. When your slowing down and your foot is on the brake you have to let go of it momentarily to blip the gas when downshifting. This is when auto rev matching comes in handy!

What's the difference between "throttling while the clutch is depressed" or "pressing the clutch twice, releasing it in the middle while throttling and pressing again"? There are videos showing both options.

When you hold the clutch and downshift when would be the appropriate time to tap the gas pedal? Do you tap the gas pedal while in gear or while in neutral going into the downshifting gear?

So when do I start moving my stick into the lower gear ? When I have the clutch in right before I blip the throttle or as I blip the throttle ? I get the concept but I’m confused on the timing

Great video Spencer. Could you please go into more detail about the caveat on doing damage to engine/trans.What exactly should one avoid doing? Going into second seems to be the biggest problem for me (Jerks car). What speed should one go into second from third say on a really sharp corner? Also I read that one should blip the throttle after shifting and before letting out the clutch which seems to make sense as by the time you shift and let out the clutch the revs will have dropped again. I would really appreciate any input. Thanks.

I just perfected how to downshift in my sportsbike. Now i have to learn this too? Actually its the same concept but more things to operate. Sigh... i dont wanna mess my bnew car.

You should double clutch, it’s much better for the transmission

Spencer, best vid i've seen on rev matching. I think I'm still a bit rusty on going from 3rd to 2nd. Would you recommend downshifting two gears? I've tried doing it, but its always super jerky.
