i recommend to touch the brake of the backwheel slightly so the red light shows the other ppl behind you that you slow down
@gronkgrunk

Yep, that's how i do it too. Helps give the driver behind a couple seconds of advance warning that you're slowing down. Sometimes i even give the brake lever a few light taps to flash my brake light before actually slowing down so other drivers can notice it sooner.

i have an box wired to my ecu and it activates the brake light, if i have more than 50% throttle position and close the throttle. Does basically the same thing you do, but automaticly.

I have a "smart brake module" wired into my brake light. My brake light begins flashing when it senses deceleration. Then solid when I'm on the brakes.

I have been doing rev matching when I am going fast and needed a quick response on gearing down aggressively. Rev matching is also a wise choice gearing it up especially up slopes and in jams. Saved my hide a few times to evasively avoid accidents. I do engine braking too especially a slow stop on the red light, behind cars or going down slopes. Depends on your riding style.

rev matching break-down: 4 steps 1 clutch in 2 gear down 3 rev 4 clutch out If it is too difficult thinking about the four steps happening super fast, try splitting it in the middle. Clutch in and gear down. you can coast along clutch in without issue. This gives you time to focus on the rev matching and letting the clutch go again :)

Something not learned yet, my mind is thinking that you would increase throttle for higher gear and decrease throttle for a lower gear. If you blip the throttle seems the opposite would happen, btw I'm ok with counter steering. Will experiment with this rev match. Own a HD could help I guess.

Sounds like riding a motorcycle is like learning to play an instrument. In the beginning you're uncoordinated and sound horrible, but with practice you start to sound pleasant and become more comfortable with more challenging techniques. Like using 3rd position on the violin or playing while singing.

It sounds really cool and pro when other riders do, but I just got to know about the benefits of doing it by watching your video. @schr4nz
@schr4nz 5 лет назад
@@henryh3643 you don't know the precise revs to hit in order to keep the bike stable through a turn, there's so many variables, you should pick your gear and speed before entering the turn unless you're an aspiring racer and I'm pretty sure even they don't change gears unless they're very early in a turn or the bike is on the way back up
@henryh3643
@henryh3643 5 лет назад
@@schr4nz well, at least form what I know. Race cars with rwd have the same problem. If they would downshift in turnes without rev matching, they would spin out in the most turns. If the driver is talented, he can heel and toe (manually rev matching in cars) or his car does it by itself. The car COULD calculate the exact engine speed so that it would fit 100%, but they don't do it. Just because reving a bit higher than needed but not applying throttle while engaging is also working perfectly fine. And I can tell you since I'm rev matching I never had problems with slipping tires because I shifted in a turn (no matter if you should do it or not)

Engine braking : Happening every time you let go of the throttle. Fuel and air injection stop, so a vaccum is created in the cylinder. It slows down the pistons, and so it slow down the bike/car. About rev matching : Main goal is to avoid locking the rear wheel. On wet road or in cold conditions, anything with two cylinders or less, and bigger than 600cc will instantly lock the back wheel if you apply too much sudden engine braking by not rev matching ! This is mandatory on some bikes !
@drew9041
@drew9041 5 лет назад
Sorry bud, but there's a lot wrong with this description of engine braking... fuel and spark are cut therefore the engine no longer has a power stroke due to lack of an ignition event. The load on the engine i.e. weight of the bike transmitted from the wheel through the gearbox and clutch back to the crank is what slows the motor and the bike. The vacuum in the cylinders and air intake have nothing to do with it, as long as the the engine is rotating there is a vacuum.

@@drew9041 the vacuum in the manifold when the throttle closes is what makes the engine slow down.
@87swoo44
@87swoo44 5 лет назад
@@jonkexx its not vacuum its as @drewbot R1 said, but has to do a bit more with timing, air compression. yes fuel and spark are limited to just enough to keep the engine running (ie: one or two cyl and none in the rest) then the timing kicks in and holds the exhaust port closed for a longer period of time. building pressure in the cyl from the piston compressing the air. then releases it at the last moment. when you throttle off the wheels are already spinning pushing the force back through your transmission, and into the engine. if the engine had no engine braking your car/bike would essentially be in neutral. by adding the air compression it gives the engine some resistance from spinning over. thus all the way back into the tires.

its really important to note that rev matching should be done by someone with enough experience on a particular bike to have throttle control built into muscle memory. if you overload the revs on a down shift its essentially like popping the clutch to rip a wooly. also, the concept is: match the rpm to a given speed for a particular gear. anyone driving a standard transmission car will understand... Finally, it's really important to note that engine braking does not take precedence over using you brake. its a luxury and testament to your skills, but things happen quick... pull in the clutch and hit the breaks if things get tense.

Papa Yam, I've been watching your vids for a few months now. I have never been on a bike before and have seriously wanted to ride, I'm in the market for a Ninja 400 in the near future and have looked up tons and tons of vids from other Tubers, but your videos are the best I have watched so far. Really in depth explanations with everything and it helped me really "feel" what it would be like for riding. Common mistakes to look out for, Fears to overcome, helpful tips, instructions on braking such as this video, etc. etc.. Keep up the Great Work.

I'll need to give it a try. Personally I think I've kinda taught myself to "catch" the lower gear higher revs with a bit of throttle. instead of "blipping" the gas and dunking the clutch, I guess I kind of gas it a bit and release the clutch into the lower gear if that makes sence. Been riding for 18 years now, never burned or trashed a clutch, and never had the rear wheel lock up on me or become unstable. I just ease into the lower gear, even while riding hard it's automatic actually. But I'll give it a go I guess.

I always let go slowly the clutch after downshifting and after using the rear brake to slow down a bit, thinking that it was the right thing to do, but thanks to you, now I know how to downshift correctly. I only have to practice to make it become "automatic". So thanks again😁😁

I don't know any riders that do rev matching, most of them never heard of it, when your coming to a stop and you ease up on the gas ,and use the brakes or clutch if your stop is more sudden ,the bike slows down automatically so you are going slower for the next downshift so the engine braking is not abrupt anyway, I have never rev matched and had no mechanical problems
@jake8217

Well! With Rev matched downshifts, you slow down much quicker than what you are doing, while being extremely smooth at it.

I've been riding for less than 2 months. I'm still learning but rev-matching is proving to be difficult. 3 out of 4 times, when I try downshifting and blipping the throttle, I quickly lurch forward. Usually happens when I'm in 4th gear going down to 3rd (usually going 35 mph and 5000rpm. I think my right hand is still blipping too much.
@mohanad5453

that's a problem with timing. you're either blipping your throttle too late or too early.

I'm on my first 100 miles still. Every time I downshift it lurches unless i give it some rpms before.releasing the clutch. I have a lot to learn still. I hear ppl talk about downshifting to pass ppl. When I downshift it's like a hard engine brake lol Edit: ahhhhhh...it's because I don't give it any RPMs when downshifting is when I bog down. This video helps it makes sense. Rev matching. Ok

@tiagodumont4422
@tiagodumont4422 5 лет назад
Trail breaking is easy but a slight mistake can send you sliding off the road. Essentially, you've probably noticed how the front of the bike sinks when you are breaking, how it comes back up when you let go of the break and how the bike sinks a bit at the rear while cornering. The point of trail breaking is essentially to extend your breaking into the curve and make all this "lift front", "steady", "sink back" motion happen harmoniously. The beginner's hazard here is if you start turning before releasing enough of the front break to prevent it from going off. Also, you don't have to try this at high speeds. Something like 40km/h is enough to notice if you are on the correct path.

There’s just one little thing I don’t understand, everybody says when you downshift don’t let out the clutch super fast or else the bike will jerk and thats not good. Yet when you’re down shifting in the video you pull the clutch in and out in like less than a second 🤔
@rtogurl
@rtogurl 4 года назад
When blipping, you let the clutch out quickly from what I gather.
@evanchivers8915
@evanchivers8915 3 года назад
Ya dude it depends on how you are downshifting. Letting it out slowly is great when you are letting your RPM match with the gear you just shifted to. If you are rev matching you don’t need to let the clutch out slowly because the gear is now matching the RPM and the bike won’t be throwing itself forwards due to poor shifting
@ronladuke7235
@ronladuke7235 3 года назад
The whole thing should take less than a second, If your try to let the clutch out slowly the revs will drop down and when the clutch engages the momentum of the bike will rev the engine the bike will jerk.

Started off on a dirtbike when I was a lot younger and man did I stall the crap out of that thing lol. Overtime, got the hang of it and now just got into motorcycles. It's a small change of transition because your typically going smoother and faster on a motorcycle. Rev matching is also similar and different in its own way based on bike characteristics. Overall, I think its always great to start off on a cheap bike because you will make mistakes, learn your way up, then invest into something you really desire. Great video!

Really depends on the bike, too. Larger cylinders and tuning can affect engine braking a lot. For example, my z650, a parallel twin 650cc, will slow down hard if you go into 3rd from 4th without giving it throttle. Different bike have different needs.
