I see others have mentioned the gesture-talking in this video, but what gets me is how effective you are with it. You're conscious of how your body language will be seen and you use that to maximize your ability to convey information. It's obviously more subtle in other contexts, but it's always there.

Drew- I've studied about 5 videos from experienced well known pilots on you tube but nobody said "..you just pitch your way through it.." and now I got it. Hope the gig with Rotor Riot works out for you- I think you fit in well with that program (no matter what Steele thinks...or visa versa; both you guys are very talented you know..yeah sometimes its pretty obvious:) You add a dynamic that I think deep down those guys realize is refreshing. Anyway, thanks Drew- cool peace

You're a great teacher. Your trick explanations, and breaking them down into their component parts, and then putting them together is priceless. THANKS! How familiar are with you with fixed wing aerobatics? I've only done it in full size aircraft, and quads are so different, I'm not completely sure if fixed wing acro knowledge is that useful for quad freestyle, because the thrust mechanism is so different. I know that simple turns might be harder for a fixed wing pilot to get the hang of, because in an aircraft you do kind of bank and yank. The back pressure in the bank increases the lift of the wing while it's rolled, which makes you turn. This has very little in common with turning a quad while maintain forward speed. I mention the fixed wing aerobatics, because being familiar with some basic terminology could come in handy, at least because it may describe the path of both aircraft, even if different lift mechanisms are at work. You mentioned an immelman when I think you were in more of a half cuban 8 flight path. Here are the basic looping maneuvers for aircraft, in case they're useful to know or refer to. There are probably about a million articles on the web about these. 1.) A simple loop: In an airplane, it's a lot easier than with a quad, because in FPV quad flying, the goal is for momentum to carry you through the top of the power loop far enough to make it round and symmetric, but adding power inverted is trouble, so there is judgement involved, with camera tilt, and limited field of view complicating matters such as when to cut the throttle and coast, and when to pitch back down again inverted, and when to come in with the power and level out. In a regular aircraft it feels like cheating because the camera is your eyes, and they move, and so does your neck! Multiple gimbals kind of. LOL So you'd start a loop with a fairly high entry airspeed, and pull up sharply enough to pull a few G's, and as your nose moves up, the horizon straight ahead is no longer a reference, so you can look out to the left at your wing to maintain orientation. As you finish the first quarter, you need to ease off the G forces, and then tilt your head back and watch the horizon come into view inverted. The goal is to coast over the top, with power on, because if you don't, and keep too much of a positive G load, you'll make an egg shaped figure instead of a round loop. The back of the loop is kind of the reverse of the first half, in that you start pulling back and bringing on the G forces as your airspeed picks up, and it should be max at the bottom at the same altitude you started, and the same heading. Knowing all that is essential to what follows. 2.) An Immelman: This is simply a half loop, and at the top, with a good aerobatic aircraft, you'd actually pause at the straight and level inverted point (at which point you'll now be at -1G) and roll upright at full throttle. So it's a course reversal maneuver that started in WWI dog fighting. It's WAY easier than with a quad. With the quad you'd enter the power loop come off the throttle, and at the very top of the loop, you'd roll out with the power off and then come up on the throttle and fly away straight and level. Then I guess you'd have the quad equivalent of an Immelman. 3.) A Cuban 8: I'm nit picking here, because what you did could have been an Immelman or a half Cuban 8, depending upon where you rolled upright, and added throttle. And camera tilt is a factor that could make someone like me think you were further along in the power loop than you were. In an airplane, you enter a normal loop, but at the 5/8 point I guess, when the plane is upside down at a 45 degree angle, you pause on that 45 degree inverted down line (-1G now) then roll upright on that line (+1G), pause, and then immediately pull back to straight and level and fly away. That's a half cuban 8. For a full Cuban 8, you'd continue on into another loop, and do the same thing, and end up making a figure 8 in the sky. So in the quad, if you caught the top of the power loop, and rolled back to upright and level and added power you'd have an Immelman, like you said, but if you continued the power loop until the quad was further along (past the top, and on the back side, too early to add power and about a 45 degree inverted attitude, and THEN rolled back to straight and level and added power, you'd have done a half Cuban turn around maneuver. I thought you were past the top enough to be called a half Cuban, but not that I think about it, with camera tilt, I guess straight and level inverted is going to look like you've past the top of the maneuver because of the camera tilt, so to me it could have looked like you were on the back side of the loop, when you were really right at the top. In which case you really did do an Immelman turn around maneuver. In an aircraft, a split S has a twist that makes it different than what a quad is capable of. You roll the aircraft inverted, and then pull through into a half loop to straight and level, and recover there. By necessity, you're going to gain a lot of airspeed, and loose altitude. Split S's too low to the ground kill people. A quad is a different beast when it comes to pitch changes. That's what makes it so cool in free style in my mind. The path of the quad in a spit S can be about anything you like, because you can roll inverted, and pitch upright all in one move. Which can give rise to the moving backwards with the momentum effects you're so good at. Or you can make like a plane, and extend the path to upright. So the path of the aircraft through the air can be highly variable, while in an aircraft you're kind of stuck. In an aircraft, if you first pull up onto a 45 degree up line, pause, roll it inverted, pause, and then pull through (a split S started on a 45 degree up line basically) and finish a loop you've just done a half Reverse Cuban 8. Quads can't be inverted on a sustained negative G level inverted path like a plane. But planes can''t hover, and having the freedom to roll and flip about the roll and pitch axis, combined with the high power to weight ratio, makes quad free style extremely challenging, hypnotic to watch. And REALLY fun to do. In an airplane, if you slowed down, and tossed the stick forward, a forward flip would NOT result. And if you slowed down and added full throttle, you wouldn't shoot upward like a rocket. That stupid prop pulling you around, and getting the lift through the wings via air flowing over them, ruins the show compared to quads. LOL
