I tried it on a Craftsman battery #1301341 that fits my Craftsman 19.2 volt drill model 973.113400 that I bought in the early '80s. I ran the procedure 3X. It did not work for me. I loosened the top of the battery, many of the nickel-cadmium cells had leaked with a buildup of what came out of it. I had a few other battery power tools from Harbor Freight with dead batteries that I bought in the late '90s and early '2000s. It worked on all of these power tools. Thank you

This occurs with a TON of new SMART battery chargers! The charger will not start, if it reads voltage below a certain limit (like 5 volts?) The battery may still be good, just really low in voltage. If you give the battery a jump, or boost, bring up the voltage to like 7 volts? Then the charger will recognize a good battery, and start charging it all the way up! Then it stays in a float charge mode. Dewalt, Ryobi, etc. won't tell you this, because they want to sell you a New $100 battery! Because that is how they make money! Eventually a battery will reach the end of its life span. That is when you can rebuild the pack, with new battery cells! ($30.00) Or finally spend that $100.00 Thanks for sharing this tip!
@zounds010
@zounds010 3 года назад
I think the assumption is voltage below threshold=at least one cell is damaged. That's a reasonable assumption if the cordless device monitors the batteries and will switch off when the voltage gets too low (i.e. you don't use the battery until it's flat). Then the edge case where the battery voltage is below threshold but the cells are ok (and the trick shown in the video is safe) happens only if you leave the pack without charging it for several months. Charging a damaged cell is a recipe for disaster though, and Li-ion fires are difficult to extinguish.
@chrissewell1608
@chrissewell1608 3 года назад
@@zounds010 Good point! But how do you tell the difference, between a battery pack with a bad cell and just a dead battery? Without attempting to charge the battery packs? Or even after charging the battery?
@jhard3508
@jhard3508 3 года назад
But if the battery gets that low the battery has some sort of damage. If you discharge a battery it will not drop below a certain threshold (chemical dependent lithium, lead acid, etc) unless it sits unused or uncharged. That’s why it doesn’t charge with its regular charger for safety reason. And when you put “volts” on the battery and if it does charge it doesn’t hold the charge. Second how is it the company trying to beat you out of $100 if you improperly maintained the battery and it died?
@jhard3508
@jhard3508 3 года назад
@@chrissewell1608 Honestly you know you’re at that threshold when the charger declined to charge the battery. Charger these days are smart enough to know either by the charge to discharge rate as it charges or by the batteries reaction as it charges. Ex. If you put a battery on charge and the voltage spikes and doesn’t level or if you charge and the battery voltage doesn’t increase for a certain amount of time the charger stops charging. Some chargers even detect temperature
@zounds010
@zounds010 3 года назад
@@chrissewell1608 You can tell the difference is by measuring the battery voltage after charging. If it stabilizes at a lower voltage than you'd expect (e.g. 10.8V for a 12V battery), you know one of the cells is defective. A better way is by disassembling the battery and then monitoring the temperature of each cell. Another indication is the time elapsed since the last time you charged it. Battery was charged yesterday and won't charge today?->defective cell and unsafe to charge. Battery was last charged 6 months ago->this trick might work.

A good fully charged drill battery can be used too. The process is to put amperage in the dead battery so the charger will sense the amperage and charge the battery again.if the charger dosen't see the battery amps it won't charge and indicates the battery is bad.

Amperage is the flow. Voltage is force applied. The charger may be equipped to sense voltage and uses dropping resistors to vary it's action. Cheaper components may not be well equipped and throwing them out may be safest. I know a guy who still has "that smell" in his garage from leaving cheap rechargeable batteries plugged in charging. Great spotlight beam when you need it. Don't leave it plugged in unattended.

You can often get them to charge by taking it off the charger and putting it back on. Eventually, those few minutes before it goes to fast flash build up enough charge to convince the charger to stay in charge mode. Then after it shows fully charged, charge it again. It may charge it to 9.6V the first time, then 12V, 14.4v before finally charging an 18V to 18V.

This only works if a battery has a cell or cells discharged below a minimum voltage that the charger will recognize. If the battery is at its end of life, it may only charge it for a short time or not at all. With the Lithium Polymer batteries I use that have fallen below a minimum, I change the chemistry from Lithium Polymer to NiCad or Lead, and it will pick up a charge because the minimum for them is lower. Once the cells are above that minimum, the charger is happy to continue the charge with the right chemistry.

Good video. I just use a small wall wart supply. But, I have to leave it connected about a half hour. Once the voltage in the battery comes up a little, it will take a charge. I've been doing that for some time with my Craftsman 14 volt battery for my drill. Since I can't get these batteries anymore, I got rid of everything related to those batteries. I've changed to Kobalt that has a 3 year warranty on all of their batteries. Barry

Both my chargers are so-called _smart chargers_ in that they detect the type and voltage of the battery before attempting to do anything. If the perceived voltage is too low (under 5 volts), then nothing happens even though they are both rated to charge 6, 12 and 24 volt packs. In the past I've used them to charge up the batteries on my mobility scooter, either as a 24 volt pack, or bridged out as a single double amperage 12 volt battery. The latter useage is to 'balance' both batteries so that neither has to work harder than the other in normal use. Fortunately I have so many still useable traction batteries (short term) that I can make up packs from 12 volts up to 48 volts. At least one of those combinations should be quite sufficient to kickstart the normal charging process.

I have done this but used two car batteries hooked in series, to get 24 volts. It did work but the drill battery still wouldn't hold the charge for very long. You could use it but it would lose charge overnight. If the charger is like a golf cart one, they have to sense some power from the battery before it will work. I bought a golf cart and was told the batteries and charger were both bad. It had six, six volt batteries and the charger was thirty-six volt. I filled the batteries up with water and used a twelve volt charger on two of them at a time. After I had them charged then the cart charger would work. I used it for a couple more years on those batteries before I replaced them. I have a hard time with drill batteries just because I don't use them enough. The last two I bought online, because of price, were junk. Beware. Thanks for sharing.

I think what's happening is that on a battery that will not take a charge, tiny tendrils (strands) of resistive material form. They are called DENDRITES. They prevent the voltage from flowing through the battery correctly to be able to charge it. When you connect a high-powered charger to the battery, it burns the DENDRITES away. This allows the battery to accept a charge again. It might be true that your battery may not have quite as much life left in it as it used to, or that it won't last as long. But at least that's better than having to throw your battery in the garbage can. Also, do not leave your battery on the charger all the time! Once it's charged, take it off the charger! Your battery will last longer that way. And your charge will last longer also.
@Teknopottu

I heard it has something to do with crystalized buildup and the higher voltage sort of neutralizes or burns the crystals off and then you have clean contacts.

What setting did you place the battery charger on? 12V? Slow trickle? Fast charge?

I think it would be safer for the battery pack to use slow trickle and take a little longer.

Sled Nation: Same here, I ended up with five drills and screw guns like that, two Makita, two Ryobi, and a DeWalt from guys who work construction and didn't have the time or patience to bother with them because of their work at the time, so they would give them to my Son who was a newbie at the time; if something can be repaired do so. BTW, my house and new cars and motorcycles are all paid for, took awhile, BUT I've learned to never fritter away money from the days when I had to bust my ass making a living.

Yes this allows the battery to charge but... Run time is considerably shorter than a new or rebuilt one.
@Teknopottu
@Teknopottu 3 года назад
Revieved something is never as good as new one but works somehow 'till you repair or get a new one. That is if you need to. Someone perhaps does not afford always the newest or the usage of battery is so part time that so-so-working does the job.
